Read the article and you will see

No ..their arithmetic is still wrong, even if we ignore the fact that all footballers' wages are usually quoted net of tax to try and hide from us poor mugs who effectively pay them just how ridiculously high they are, and for some reason they've decided to calculate his before tax.

The net figure of 2 million euros a year is fractionally over £30k a week, and that is how footballers' wages are normally quoted. If you do add on tax, it still can't be more than double that.

Where do you park when you go to West Quay?

I park at the Podium, they've always charged and there's no perception that (say) Next or Republic or Thornton's are suddenly asking me to pay for parking at West Quay after it being free previously.

JJB's takings from me would also be down though, I never go in there since they started charging for THAT car park because like St Mary's I don't use the car park any more so I don't go there anywhere near as often.

Is he any good though? Has anyone seen him play or is it just the value that is exciting? 12m so must be good type thing....................

I have seen him play a number of times for Bologna and just dont see him making it in the premiership!! He is skillful but he does not work hard and can go missing in games. For Bologna he seems to be good for 1 game, then **** for 8!

I would spend the money on signing better but cheaper players for example Coutinho (inter), Benteke (Genk) or even take Ramsey from arsenal?

A decent keeper is what we need, not an inconsistant wannabe

The9 is always dull. I expect a bit more from you these days.

Christ, that was almost a compliment. Ta.

2 million euros is approximately (!) 1,574,118.56 GBP (http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert/?Amount=2000000&From=EUR&To=GBP)

If that is net (i.e. 'take home' pay), then it equates to £131,176 per month net which, using this handy page: http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/lifestyle.php suggests a weekly salary of just over £62k pw gross.

My entire excitement is built on one free kick in the Olympics and "£12m so must be good". I do know a few people who went to Uruguay matches at the Olympics but I doubt they specifically noted him. Still a major big deal for us though.

I'm going on the basis that 3 of the biggest clubs in Europe were chasing him, he's commanding a big fee, he has 9 caps for the 2nd best internatioal side in the world (according to FIFA rankings) and he looks decent on YouTube...

Or, he could buy Portsmouth every week.

As a disclaimer I think we should all ask the question: Is this economically sound if we sign this player?

on the PTS we accuse Pompeys fans of never questionning their huge signings so lets cover our tracks so that we can continue to criticise them

I'd assumed the money is coming from Liebherr's £2.5bn. If it turns out Cortese's an evil, deluded megalomaniac and just pretending he's got the cash, well he's not a corrupt money laundering arms dealer invisible sheikh so we can't really be expected to have foreseen that.

We have the backing of a family worth Billions. They had the backing of a small time arms dealer and some no-mark Hong Kong business man.

Yes I have seen him play

On Telly and (outside team GB) was the only player I noticed.

I'm a tiny bit gutted that I only got to see Team GB, South Korea, Mexico and Japan now. Did watch UAE/Uruguay and Team GB/Uruguay on the box but not very closely.

The maths works.

We get 60mil in PL money even IF we only stay up for one year, so even with the salaries for the new signings and pay rises for the lads who got us up it is financially sound.

Should we get relegated, then obviously there are the Parachute Payments, but IF he is even partly successful we would get a big lump of our money back if we had to sell him.

The PLAN of buying younger players who can grow with us means they SHOULD add value, as opposed to buying 30+ year old PL experienced "has beens"

It's not a surprise to me we are paying this amount for a player and I still expect more to come, I'd guess the budget at something between 25/30mil for summer spends

I know very few on here have actually believed a word that NA or the Don have said about "Having a Plan" but you only have to read that Telegraph article again today.

It doesn't matter two hoots whether WE believe it, the club (& those who hold the financial strings) obviously believe it and sure as hell seem able to get that Vision across to players.

Could still all go Pete Tong, and like I said on page 1 of this thread it's a stupid idea. But only to us & the rest of the football world, not to the club.

(Mind you still don't believe NA's target of 12 points from 1st (yeah OK) FOUR games!)

Jeez, you have self-worth issues if you think being expected to be a bit less dull than me is a "almost a compliment". That's a huge insult. Anyone who isn't massively less dull than me is seriously lacking in charisma. Which by the way was a nickname of mine once.

The salary calculator assumes they are being paid PAYE and they pay tax like the rest of us... I promise you he'll be paying through a number of 'tax-efficient' methods and can't believe he'll be paying more than 20% tax at most... Like most people that are earning serious money... Would have thought the journos would have calculated this...

Oh I realise it's not a perfect comparison, it was just the best way of showing the rough calculations... although if he is more tax-efficient than most, his weekly gross wage would be LOWER than £62k a week.

Having people sign only for the money is not a good idea, trust me I know 1st hand. It can splinter a dressing room when other players arent happy about someone earning 3 times as much as them, especially if he doesnt perform.

We know that but just for a little while we are enjoying just being in the race to sign a genuinely top draw player.

Can't think of QPR buying anyone comparable to this to be honest?

Genuine question here but just how good is Ramires? Obviously everyone is stunned at the amount we've bid but is the valuation what we're getting excited about rather than the player? Obviously like most of us I can only go on youtube vids and he looks OK but Lens looked better. To be honest he doesn't look any different to Lallana and, whilst getting another player of that ability is great, I'm really wondering whether he's worth nearly 12M quid. Guess time will tell.

Lens is 24, Ramirez 21.

Lallana has been doing tricks against league 1 and championship sides. Ramirez has been doing it in Serie A.

Made his Uruguay debut aged 19 and has made 9 appearances for the national side. And Uruguay are a top team.

I was at the Uruguay - Senegal game. Although Uruguay were pretty poor overall, that was mainly down to Suarez and Cavani being excessively wasteful and their defenders being hopelessly outpaced. Ramirez was their best player by a long way, pulled the strings and put the strikers through several times. Looked dangerous from set pieces, composed on the ball and technically excellent. I think he got booked for a pretty rough tackle as well so in all he did a relatively convincing impression of Paul Scholes.

He said it was because of the money, but relatively speaking in the Prem I don't actually think it amounts to that much.

He also said we could offer him first team football, whereas Spurs and Liverpool wouldn't.

Yeh, buy a whole team of overpaid, overrated players instead. Hope that works out for you.
