  1. 1. Ramirez, will he sign Y/N

The signing of Keegan was beyond all our dreams at that time, we were a small club with big ambitions and he was a world class player and very well known. I am not saying Ramirez isnt but he is young and still has most of his career in front of him, still a big coup but nevertheless not the same magnitude for me as the Keegan signing.

Those who were there are the time - How would this compare to signing Keegan all those years ago?

Not really. KK was double (IIRC) European Player of the Year and in his prime. Probably one of the most famous players on the planet, This guy may be brilliant, but until this week I had never heard of him.

But times have changed. Signing Messi now would be bigger than signing Keegan back then.

We could mass debate this like The9 et al but I'll give you that one.. :)

Bloody idiot.. how does European Footballer of the Year change over time?? FFS

I much prefer the old days when there was no booking free, free to park and we signed players of the calibre of Mikel Nielsen.

Mikael Nilsson even. My least favourite Saints player ever, completely sh111t out of a 60/40 in his favour at Norwich in our relegation season. The twaat.

He was a Swedish international though, which worked with Anders and Killer (and nearly worked with Jacobsson and Jesus).

Yea thank you for your interest.... It's just a ball park figure numb nuts.

No sh it! You mean you dont know? Man! - my illusions are shattered. Yep that's me being a numb nuts for sure.

Makes a big difference between the top estimate on here of £80k pw and the "net" figure of £30k pw though and a more reasonable "ball park" figure is probably somewhere in the lower (below 50%) range.

How many nationalities is our first team squad if this deal goes through, think I have counted 8.

Various English,

Fox - arguably Scottish though born in England (same goes for Matt Phillips for the record)

Ramirez - Uruguayan

Lee - Japanese

Forte - Barbadian

S Davis - Northern Irish

Schneiderlin - French

Guly - Brazilian

Hooiveld - Dutch

De Ridder - Belgian

Gazzaniga - Argentinian

Fonte - Portuguese

We no longer have any welshies in the first team squad though.

I make it 12 including Ramirez.

I don't hero worship him either, I just weigh up the pros and cons. The pros outweigh the cons... heavily.

Yes, but they are my conditions for the kind of hero worship he already gets from some on here. He's already more than met my conditions for being decent at building the playing squad to get us back into the Prem, some kind of consideration of customers would round it off nicely. Would cost a lot less than the grand gesture of not having sponsorship on the sash kit, for instance.

Never mind that, you didn't have to pay to park in those days. Ironic he pulled out of a 60/40 tackle, as that is also our success rate with Swedish players.

I take it you've missed the message to "have a nice day" on the barriers as you out your ticket in to leave the car park?

Ramirez is left footed an prefers playing advanced in the centre (ie where Lallana has been playing so far) or out on the right where he can cut inside.

Don't think he has blistering pace (hopefully Phillips will provide that) but has effortless technique and drifts past players.

He glides along the ground doesn't he? Kind of how Bale and to an extent Kaka look on the pitch, just effortless beating of players without having stunning pace.

Seems odd to report wages in Net, I guess that's how they do things in Italy?

I remember Ruud Gullit relating that he basically got the sack from being Chelsea manager as a result of a "misunderstanding" over his new £2m contract being gross not net, so yeah, probably.

He is obviously flying over today, would need a medical and then hopefully can sign later today. Work permit will be requested - hopefully come through in time for Wigan but who knows?

Just really want to get this one wrapped up ASAP - its not done until its on the OS with quotes from Executive Chariman Nicola Cortese.

Not all European, Asian, Oceanic and N. American players adapt to English football...

Players from all those continents lack discipline and are physically cynical. Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, let alone beak our transfer fee record for them!

When it comes to Home Grown rules etc do they look at it in terms of Scottish, NI, Welsh, English or is it British? (Genuine question not complaining about the list)

And how many players have we got with dual nationality?

And a final one, who have we got who speaks Spanish in order to help Ramirez out (apart from Gazzaniga)?

I wouldn't know, I never go in the car park any more. Which of course means I go to the Megastore a lot less than I would have previously as I resent being charged for wandering around the club shop. Have I mentioned that I haven't bought any of the new kit yet ? That's £160 they'd have got out of me previously which they're not seeing this year... it's the little things that help build an affinity with the club rather than driving a wedge. They either care about that money from me or they don't, they can't logically care about the £1 but not the £160 it's basically costing them to have that.

When that stuff goes away Cortese can have my undying loyalty. For now I just appreciate that we're back in the Prem and hope we're good enough to stay in it. Most of the on pitch stuff is spot on, but with Prem tv money there's literally no point in persisting with policies that just annoy potential customers.

Anyway, woo, we're (probably) signing Ramirez ! :D

And one from Nigel Adkins praising the chairman for getting the deal done.

just seen this bit in the telegraph

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/9482011/Premier-League-2012-13-season-preview-live.html

11.38 Southampton are on the verge of signing Uruguayan winger Gaston Ramirez from Bologna for £11.8m. Spurs and Liverpool were also interested, but here's a quote from the man himself which explains why he's chosen the south coast:

"It is an offer that you cannot refuse. They will give me so much money".

That's a good enough reason for signing!!

Home grown is anyone who's been at an English or Welsh club for 3 seasons before aged 21. We are comfortably within the "must have 7 home grown players" rule.

Dunno fully about dual nationality, Fox born in England but plays for Scotland (and Phillips), there was a run on south Americans having EU passports a while back and many have Spanish passports, but can't clarify on that one. Gazzaniga didn't need a work permit though and there's no mention of it for Ramirez yet (and with only a few caps he won't qualify automatically for one) so I'm guessing he may have a Spanish passport.

Other than Gazzaniga who presumably speaks Spanish, Guly and Fonte are Portuguese speakers which would be useful if not perfect, but you'd assume Guly also knows some Italian as well, which Ramirez might do. Or he could speak English, who knows?
