We need to get real about this. The only reason the bloke even considered coming here in the first place was the promise of wads of dosh. His interest in our club is Zero as witnessed by the fact that he couldn't give a toss about whether he comes here or not, hence the laissez faire attitude of all concerned on the their side.

Like Buttner he's just waiting for a much better offer from a club he's heard of to come on on deadline day so we will be gazumped yet again.

Why don't we just tell them to Fff Off and stop humiliating ourselves. We must be becoming a laughing stock. Whilst others buy we do next to Fff All and just make ourselves look like desperate tits.

The fact you think we are "humilating ourselves" and a "laughing stock" suggests you have no grasp of reality whatsoever.

So I think it's you that needs to "get real".

Charlie wayman - stop being so dramatic even if it breaks down, we wont be a laughing stock - we will remain as always a club that sets outs it terms and sticks to them - If someone else wants to make a stupid offer so be it - I suggest that Liverpool paying 35mil for Carrol makes them a bigger laughing stock than us.

Even anothe club coming in now will need to sort out teh issue with Penerol and yes if we dont see it through it will make it easier for others as the ground work/pre/what is acceptable will have been done - but thats life - what should we do? avoid going for decent targets for fear getting dumped? Jeez, we will never get every target we are after either because we wont pay the asking price, wont pay the wage demands or the player does not want to come here - and thats the same for every club. Those making swifter deals are doing so because of less complex ownership and offering over the odds in either fee or wages - this one is taking longer because we will not pay more than we think he is worth and as we have seen so far this has meant the Bologna have agreed....

You're not allowed to post updates on here according to some. What do you think you're doing hanging on every last word of every article and tweet? We're not allowed to know the latest goings on. We must look at this thread and be in silence until there is official confirmation. ;)

Anyway, thanks for that. Seems a vareity of sources in Italy are saying it *should* be done today. Lets bloody hope so!

itchen_dan, you've carried out a public service on this thread.

I can dip in and out every couple of hours or so, looking for your posts and not have to spend my entire life on Twitter - because you're spending your entire life on Twitter for me!

Keep up the good work sir. Although I do worry about what you'll do with your time when he eventually signs for someone.

I can have a good rest, re energize and get ready for the January window!!

No, It's nice to know that some appreciate the updates. I get them purely by following a certain group of journalists and with Twitter open, they automatically come through. I'm sure some think I spend all day sitting there and searching google etc for Ramirez this and Ramirez that but the beauty of Twitter is that it does it all for you. A great source of breaking news if you know who to follow.

I think people get the wrong impression of it due to fake agents etc but if you know where to look, you can uncover some useful info.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't I think mate. Thanks for the updates, people starting whining only when they read things they don't want to hear.

Quite right. It's a communication tool, a medium just like this forum, and as you use it, you learn which people you trust and have useful information or interesting opinion, and who doesn't. Just like this forum.

The only thing though is that as far as they are concerned, its a done deal because they have agreed with Saints. Saints however, going by reports, still seem to be working with Penarol to agree a fee / bonuses / %'s. This could still go wrong. Highly unlikely now as we've got this far but there is always the possibility it could fall through.

Bologna have done their part, they can do no more so can prepare to recruit players but if the Saints-Penarol part falls through, or he even fails a medical etc, they're gonna have some explaining to do to clubs who they have players lined up from.

It is in the best interests of all parties to get this sewn up today. Leaves everyone a good 40+ hours to finalise other deals.

I am not so sure about this, even giving it 50/50 status. Penarol need a significant gain out of any new agreement otherwise there is no impetus. This new agreement can take many forms, part payment now and final payment at some later date. Bearing in mind we are looking at a 5 year contract, I doubt they will want to leave in until he is resold. Unless this is covered by cast iron bank guarantees, it just does not look that easy. South American teams would be very nervous about making this sort of deal with the experiences of financial dealings in that part of the world. Then a quick glance at what happened to Rangers would be enough to make most of them shudder.

It seems Penarol are pushing for a good sum to bring this about because I cannot understand the % for youth development. That sort of argument is commonly used in youth players leaving on a free and being adjudicated by the governing body. In this situation it just smacks of any old excuse for hiking the price as much as possible. Considering the old costs to what we are hearing now it would not surprise me if the best course of action would be for us to get a loan and pay Penarol as per the original agreement with Bologna. This does not require renegotiation and I would have thought with all of Corteses contacts, relatively straight forward, especially if you bring in a sympathetic Liebherr into the equation. The only good thing I can see from Saints side is that Penarol will not want the sale to drag on to the next window or after. Normally the fee will drop as windows go by along with the delay in obtaining the money. Penarol don’t have the drive to tie things up as quickly as Bologna, where all the buying being lined up on the basis of the Ramirez deal going through. All the selling clubs will be aware of this.

There is so much guess work going on here but we seem to have a rough outline now. What I really find intriguing is how this highlights the financial structure behind the club and the remaining Liebherrs. I just do not understand how a person of Corteses standing cannot organise this independent from Bologna and Penarol, being by far the easiest and cheapest route?

To be fair, this whole Ramirez saga began because a couple of us found it, via Twitter, posted onto an Italian football site. If none of us had Twitter, we wouldn't have known about it until a good few days later when Sky reported it and since then, haven't really revisited it.

Au contraire:

Saints Official Site: Wheat

Twitter: Chaff

Mostly.;)

Think I'll come back tomorrow afternoon for an update.

I think you may be a bit late by that point because the way it is going, going by various reports etc from Italy, it looks like it should be announced today.

Any player will want to play for the most prestigious club that's offering. At the moment that's us. The money we're offering is probably about the same as what others would offer, but the clincher is that we'd make him a key player rather than a bit-parter/future prospect. Players play for themselves at the end of the day and if their attitude is right, will give their all for the team that pays their wages. Few players actually play for the clubs they have their hearts set on. The fact he has chosen uus is good enough for me.

Erm, on that basis alone, he would stay in Bologna. They have won the scudetto 7 times in their history (ok, most recently in 1964) and two Coppa Italias.

The reason he will want to come here is simply, Premier League football.... and money. As such I agree with the rest of the points you are making. Implying that Bologna is a club of lesser standing is very shakey ground.

Oh yes!

tancredipalmeri: Southampton doctors in Bologna. Ramirez going through medical tests in a private centre. It's a race against the clock before the deadline.

Feck me, is he that riddled with ailments that's it's going to take 36 hours to categorize them all??

Sounds like it should be announced today then, I would guess along with Yoshida on the OS. Odd that they think a medical will take the rest of today and also the whole day tomorrow !

Stupid me for thinking this was a done deal again yesterday. Why do I keep falling for it? It's on, it's off, it's on again. Either the italian press are making **** up or Bolonga are a **** to work with. Bored now! Just get it done!

Or it's just a transfer with a few more complications and negotiations than usual, which normally we don't get to hear about.

Chill out.

There was an interesting little story regarding medicals on SSN the other day, it showed what actually happens in the whole process.

You have MRI scans, heart scans, breathing tests as well as your joints. You get all sorts of weird and wonderful injections and blood tests, and medicals are often conducted in separate parts as well - but I imagine we're doing this all in one at Bologna.

They also said on Sky that no medical is always 100%, it's up to the doctors to then present evidence to the club on their current condition and if the signing would present a long-term risk. Short-term problems would often be ignored.

Translation: in the next few hours we await formal confirmation of the transfer of Gaston Ramirez to Southampton.

This was posted online in Italy at 11.52am btw - so a few hours could mean around 3 or 4pm.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I thought in many cases, contracts are often already signed 'subject to medical' and 'subject to work permit'. So I reckon there is a more than even possibility that the contracts are all signed (with the player, with Bologna, and with Penarol) and these last 2 hurdles of the medical and work permit are currently being completed. This would also align with the fact that Bologna are already signing players; because the deal for Ramirez is already done.

So they could be testing his torso in Bologna while at the same time testing his legs at SUH? The wonders of science, I really can't keep up :spaz:

I really hope we'll have him sewn up today...

Saw that aswell. Very interesting considering some people think it's a little bit of running, bit of a blood pressure check and done in an hour. They can take time. Especially when you are shelling out such a big fee, you want the player to be in perfect condition.

See that Joey Barton underwent the first part of his medical yesterday at Marseille (scans, tests etc) and began his second part today by doing some running, fitness work etc. It all depends on the buying club and their standard practices when it comes to buying players.

I imagine with NA at the helm and our medical staff, we are very very stringent in our medicals. At the end of the day as you said, this will be worth taking time over as it is a significant long-term investment and the last thing you want is to shell out 12m squid on a player who has a degenerative knee condition for e.g

I mean Hull didn't really think the Bullard transfer through did they? Or they got very had advise. £5m quid and 40k p/w, he was signed with an Injury and they released him with an injury.

We did the same with Fontaine last year. Everything was fine, fee agreed, terms agreed, got to the medical stage and bang, found out an issue with his ankle. What happens, literally a few weeks later, Fontaine picks up an injury to that same ankle and was out for weeks. Very crucial part of the transfer process and something that shouldn't be rushed.

I watched this as well, very interesting & when investing this amount of money on a player you can't be to careful.

if true & medical taking place then looks like deal is done & just waiting for medics to give the ok to complete. Having said that the way this saga has gone anything is possible & I won't believe it until its on the OS.

Le tissier and Keegan instantly spring to mind. And Gaston Ramirez didn't snub tottenham's contract offer at any point. Carry on...
