Saint Charlie Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11684/7987799 Must be two centre backs lined up as NA has said all along. If he leaves then definitely two - not enough to have three CBs and we can't bring any in on loan during the season. One might be a relatively young player, but definitely two bodies needed. saint_ed Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 I'm not sure why people think this means we have replacements lined up. We aren't touting him out necessarily, it could simply be Charlton and Milwall making inquiries and us not proceeding until such time as we do have replacements. It's no secret we are after some CB's.
SNSUN Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 It'd be good, and somewhat of a relief, if Seaborne went out on loan. He looked good in League One IMO, but has yet to show me he's capable of playing at a higher level, let alone a level with some of the best footballers in the world. Good recovery experience for him if it happens. So, Fonte, Jos and Stephens. If that were our only centre back 3 this season, I'd crap my pants. Stephens is still learning the position. Two more centre backs MUST be brought in if this were to happen, and hopefully even if this doesn't happen we'll still see 1 in.

Cork and Morgan have both played CB in the past. Again I'd crap my pants if we resorted to that too. Fox played centre back last year too. However the last thing we want is makeshift centre backs. That's worse than the crud ones that got us relegated in the first place.

However the last thing we want is makeshift centre backs. That's worse than the crud ones that got us relegated in the first place. Lundekvam and Killer were a fine pair when fit, it was Svensson's injury, the signing of Davenport and using Jakobsson anywhere other than defensive midfield that did for us. So the lesson would be "make sure you have 2 decent CBs to start with" and then "make sure you have at least one decent CB as cover". If we use Cork or Fox there for more than 10 minutes we'll be screwed.

No, but I also wouldn't assume we're going to be able to sign the ones we're after and get rid of players who could provide cover for, say, the League Cup, so we don't have to risk the Prem starters. Saint Fan CaM Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 No time for sentimentality I'm afraid - Seaborne has had a good go at Saints but when I saw him pre-accident in games, he displayed an awful awareness and got turned inside out on many occasions. He also seemed to be very prone to hoofing the ball upfield - quite OK for a L1 outfit, but certainly no good for Prem. Regardless of who is in the squad now, we need 1-2 experienced Prem level CB's and this will be facilitated by Seaborne moving on.

Bailey Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 I like Seaborne, but I just don't think he's of Premier League standard. Originally, I thought that we'd loan him out to a Champ side so he can get back playing regular football after his horror injury, but as the big kick-off draws ever closer, maybe he will be involved in some capacity? On the other hand, maybe there is something in that Sky article, and we're just waiting for replacements to be signed before letting him leave on a temporary basis? Personally, I'd like us to sign two defenders, allowing Seaborne to leave on loan until January. Then, we can review the situation.

SuperMikey Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 Seaborne going out on loan would be good for him and the club, I think. He gets first-team experience with a view to breaking into our squad when he gets back from being on loan. We get the opportunity to bring in 1 or 2 CBs so that we can survive the season comfortably and establish ourselves as a Premier League team, which is mutually beneficial. So, now lets sign Curtis Davies and/or Niklas Moisander please Mr Cortese!

My point is that if you ship Seaborne out without a replacement your backups that you want to be fielding in competitive fixtures are Jack Stephens (who as far as I'm aware wasn't a CB until pre-season) and some other kid you can't name. If Exeter fans were miffed, that would be because we took one of their better players. Also, we can't recall Martin, he's on a season long loan. david in sweden Posted 14 August, 2012 Share Posted 14 August, 2012 You're right. He started, and they gave a penalty against him for 'handball'. I've watched the video replay of that incident several times, and it clearly seems that the Leeds player played the ball onto Martin's hand, and it was not a deliberate offence. I'm just glad that the eventually penalty goal didn't affect the result.
Sheaf Saint Posted 14 August, 2012 Share Posted 14 August, 2012 One of the very few good games I've seen him have. Just goes to show how subjective football is I guess. I was at that game and I thought he looked really shaky against what was at the time a very weak Barnsley attack.
david in sweden Posted 14 August, 2012 Share Posted 14 August, 2012 I a tad Surprised you think Chaplow and Puncheon will be sold/loaned out.......And that we should get another keeper I maintained that position (on RC and JP) at the end of last season. I'd like to think that they were good enough to stay, but on that evidence...I couldn't see it.....as with the others I mentioned at the time (Barnard, Forte and Dickson). It's got nothing to do with what a nice guy (he) is....or what a good club servant (he) may have been, or even being unlucky to be kept out. The key question is: Would you be happy to see (him/them) as a regular replacement for the incumbent? I'm aware that Puncheon has had a good pre-season, but we need long term dependability..and I don't see it as part of his ( JPs) nature...hope I'm wrong ! I really liked Chaplow's competitive attitude when he came in last Autumn and he made all the difference, however, after his injury it took him time to get back and on recent showing he hasn't been half the player he was then. As for the keeper. At the end of last season we had four on the books..KD, Bart, Tommy F. and Jack Dovey. In an emergency, I think I'd had chosen Dovey ahead of TF. Of those... .only KD is left, and despite his excellent games last season, everyone knows he's pushing on a bit. I'm usually first to defend " older keepers ", and I still think so, but in the short term need good cover / competition (call it what you will)... for KD ...as in the case of a serious injury we'd have only one keeper (Gazza) to select from, and although I admit he looks a good prospect, I doubt if he'd stand the test of time and I'd hate our survival in the Prem. to depend on it . Someone else wrote that we could always get a short term loan keeper (for injury).....but what sort of quality can you expect when you " borrow" a keeper who's not good enough to get a place at his own club?....so sorry ..another keeper, too please. david in sweden Posted 14 August, 2012 Share Posted 14 August, 2012 I like Seaborne, but I just don't think he's of Premier League standard.. I think a lot of people would agree with that, regardless of the nightclub " incident ". BUT the fact of the matter is, the demands put upon a Prem. CB are enormous and I just don't see him as a long term candidate for our defence. Like Aaron Martin, a loan out will either be the making of him, or not. We will find out (at someone else's expense) what level he is really suited to. AND ... I haven't heard NA deny the story yet, either.
