Saint Malc Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 I know that I am risking the wrath of many on here by daring to criticise one of our very own hero's but Adam Lallana has not progressed since the middle of last term IMO. He looks disinterested and has been giving the ball away far too easily for my liking. He will be given a lot of slack by most on here because he is one of our hero's from the day but he does need to show a lot of improvement from what he has shown during the friendlies as far as I'm concerned. Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 I don' think he's disinterested, I think that's doing him a massive disservice. He's finally getting to play in the Premiership. I would say it's a mix between playing in a new position and playing against better players. Plus he was our best player againts Ajax. Having not seen him much in pre-season I'm not able to comment on that, but any player switching positions is likely to show a little dip in form - which is something I don't think happened in the second half of last season. I thought he'd struggle with the pace of the Championship but his skills always made him space, and I'm pretty confident he'll step up - has much more workrate than the previous season's Championship Player of the Year, Adel Taarabt, who is the definition of a luxury player and didn't really do anything last season for QPR. Saint_John Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 Adam was on the radio a few weeks ago (tea interval at the Rose Bowl) and I think they said he is due to become a father for the first time soon. From what I remember they said between manure and arsenal, so it is probably a stressful time for him.
doddisalegend Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 I've only seen one pre-seaon game and that was Ajax when Frank de Boer picked out Adam as our best player. Though from what I can make out from this place (I might be wrong) Adam has been playing a more central role in midfield rather than out on the left as he has done for most of the last three seasons so that might explain why he is looking less than great (if indeed that is the case) maybe he is still getting to grips with his new postion? Joneth Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 Have I already missed half the season? People panicking before a balls been kicked in anger. What happened to the optimism we had in May? Nothing has changed, we have signed a couple of players and we aren't suddenly a terrible team because we got beat by Udinese so can we save the negativity at least until we genuinely look like relegation fodder. Adam Lallana will put in some poor performances over the season, contrary to popular belief he does not make Messi look ****e. However, he is a very good player who will contribute his fair share of goals and assists. Quite how you can judge he's gone backwards just from a pre-season is beyond me. The optimism was based on not looking into things too deeply, and now we're looking at the reality, there are plenty of areas people can see we need to improve. We're all pretty resigned to losing 3/4 at the start, and then it's about retaining confidence after that. The stuff about Lallana suddenly being rubbish however is in a completely different league of worry and panic to "our defence looked a bit vulnerable at times last season and we should sign some CBs". I havent seen AL this pre-season, but i have said for the last couple of years, that three or four years ago; did we not expect AL to be a better player now? Thats not to say that he is not a good player, there is absolutely no doubt about that. But honestly, with the promise shown as a youngster, I thought he would be a better goalscorer that what he has achieved now (though being stuck wide probably hasnt helped). The one thing that can verify my point is; How many big PL clubs have come in for him? None, I think Fulham and Wolves or West Brom were vaguely interested, says a lot I think. Yeah, City and Arsenal are really worried about players signing contracts etc, get real, if they want a player then they will get him, and dont kid yourself that AL wouldn't have swapped places with AOC given half the chance. Correct. While, in theory, playing more centrally should enable him to see more of the ball (definitely a good thing), it also means he'll receive a lot more attention from the opposition. This, IMO, has been exacerbated in the Ajax and Udinese games by Adkins' slightly strange decision to play Jay Rodriguez on the left wing, where he's been completely ineffective (as you'd expect from a player who's been a centre-forward throughout his entire career). This has meant that the opposition can commit more defensive resources centrally, so Lallana's been mostly crowded out in those two games. It also doesn't help that Lambert would normally drop deep quite often to collect the ball and start attacking moves but unfortunately he's been about as useful as a chocolate teapot in pre-season. No different to last season, of course, where he started very slowly, but personally I'd have either Rodriguez or Sharp (who's been living up to his name so far) up front at City on Sunday. Crab Lungs Posted 13 August, 2012 Share Posted 13 August, 2012 (edited) why, you think he is worth £20m because he's agood player for Southampton FC? It's nothing to do with who he plays for and who I support; AL has attributes which very few Premier League midfielders possess and this season, he'll excel and prove that statement correct. Over the past two years, he's come on incredibly from being a perennial scuffer and waif-like winger to something resembling a future England player. Just because Stuart Pearce doesn't consider him blessed enough to chug around his midfield passing backwards, doesn't mean he's not as good as Jordan Henderson. Or Cleverley. If you're a good player, you're a good player - doesn't matter the level you're playing at. Edited 13 August, 2012 by Crab Lungs
