Red and White Stripes

Recommended Posts

For as long as I can remember, traditionally Saints have always been Red and White Stripes. After the Sash period they changed to Red and White Stripes, and have always been known by them

Cortese has scrapped tradition, and has now got us looking like a Liverpool or Middlesborough 2nd team

I've given it a chance for the "new" colors to sink in, and I realise Commercially that they have sold well, ie there's nothing else to buy, but I for one have come to the conclusion that I don't like our "new" colors'

Sainta ARE Red and White Stripes, it is our Heritage IMHO

Anyone else agree ??

There's been plenty written about this in other threads, but yeah, FYI, I agree. I happen to think its f.uc.king disgusting. Of course there are those that will tell you it's just a shirt, but it's not, it's our identity, our tradition, and anyway, it's not just the shirt, it's the shorts and socks too; they're red too in case anyone hadn't noticed, which is what makes this change different from the '84 kit.

I totally agree with you

Southampton should play in red and white stripes

I'm guessing you don't remember/weren't alive in the 1980's then - the most successful decade in the club's league history.

Not true. From 1980 to 1989 Southampton used...

From 1891 to 1950 Southampton wore blue shorts and blue socks.

Should we revert to blue shorts and blue socks as we had them in "our heritage" for 59 years!

It's an awful kit, I'd actually prefer the away one to be the home kit for some reason.

Thankfully it's only for a season and hopefully the club see's sense and reverts back to the red/white shirt, black shorts, red/white socks.

I'd like to think so, but don't hold your breath

Cortese is great in most other aspects of running Saints, but has not been part of our Heritage and Tradition

IMHO, to dismiss the Stripes philosophy, and go with something that does not in any way look like Saints, is possibly the worst decision he has made

I doubt if he will change his mindset for next season, or any other season

I'm glad your memories of 1901 have stayed with you. My memories of Saints started in the 1950's

You mean the heritage and tradition of struggling near the bottom of the table and selling all our best youngsters. The only other period in our history when we have been a force to be reckoned with was when we dumped the stripes as I recall. Don't get e wrong, I can see saints have been synonomous with stripes but I've always envied other clubs who could where the shirt on holiday without looking like a TGI Fridays employee on his way home.

You also said... "After the Sash period they changed to Red and White Stripes, and have always been known by them"

Which simply is not true - see 1980 to 1989.

I'm glad your memories of 1901 have stayed with you.

What makes 1891 to 1950 any less of our heritage than any other period? 59 years is 46% of the club's history wearing blue socks and blue shorts. Should we revert to blue shorts and blue socks?

If we wear the all red kit for the next 59 years will you accept that as our traditional kit?

What do you view as Leeds United's traditional kit? They didn't wear white until Don Revie changed it in the 1960's.

My memories of Saints started in the 1950's

So when you said... "for as long as I can remember", you blanked out a 9 year period in the 1980's.

The kits from 80-85 were red and white striped, just less of them. They also had a good balance between red and white. The two from 85-89 were typical late eighties catastrophe.

And are you really suggesting that in the late eighties people would have traditionally described Saint's traditional kit as 'red with black and white shoulders' or 'red and white Denmark style quarters'??

Not over keen on the new shirts, but so what, I don't think it will change just because a few are not keen. The thing I would have done differently would have been to have black shorts. I don't really care for a look that is almost "all red".

I get your reasoning,

As opposed to walking around in a shirt looking like a female Chinese shot putter

Hmmm

I think we'll have to get used to it. Kits come out every season now; the club will be looking at ways of maximising sales. Having red and white stripes continually is probably not the best method, so maybe best to throw in something different every other season. I reckon we'll go back to stripes next season then away from them again the seaon after.

The kits from 1950 to the 80's were also Red and White stripes

The years when Saints wore yellow/blue predates me, so I never knew them then

Saw them in yellow/blue in both 76 an 03, when Man u and Arsenal won the toss for their "home" shirts

You're allowed to hate the kit, that's subjective, but saints have played in countless kits without stripes, so to suggest it's tradition is just wrong. Tradition is usually red and white in some form though, not plain red. Personally I hate it because it's dull, the sponsor looks ridiculously tacky and I'm not a fan of any one colour kits. Away short with black shorts and red socks, that would probably be alright.

It doesn't happen often, but I totally agree with you adrian.

It's still red and white stripes - just very very wide red and very very thin white.

Still red and white stripes though, so our heritage and tradition is still intact.

Phew!

Actually even using that argument it's red and white and grey stripes, no heritage there. You might also want to ask Liverpool and Forest fans if they've ever played in red and white stripes, they haven't, but they've worn very similar kits to our current one.

That's just being picky.

I'm in the 'ït's a piece of crap' camp.

Haven't seen it in the flesh as such, but watching Saints Player Highlights of the games so far which didn't have any commentary (LOL) I had to really stay focused and remember which side was us.

As said above as well, it's not just the shirt's lack of white, it's the friggin Red Shorts that really make it a complete turn off.

Whatever happened to our "New" 3rd kit? Except for the AAP logo and PL label it doesn't appear very new to me.

Listening to them playing in the new kit on Saint Player is really going to spoil my enjoyment of the match each week  ;)

Why are we going over this again? it is clear that a number of people dislike the shirt this year but many are relieved that it is just a one year thing and are hoping that we revert back to a more standard red and white striped design next year. Lets move on...

WHERE does it state that ???

Saints are red and white with black shorts. Don't care how it comes so long as there's no prominence of one or other on the home kit. Current one just ain't Saints. What marks me the most the cheap way the pinstripes fail to meet on the shoulder.

Couldn't give a damn about what it looks like on holiday as IMO kits are for players and kids only.

I reckon if we had some sort of poll on this it would work out at approximately a 50.97 % - 33.67% yes/no split off the top of me head. The remaining 15.36% would probably say something like 'is this really all we have to talk about?' or somesuchlike.

 if only there were some way of proving these estimates plucked from the depths of your imagination..........
