Blackpool report Saints over Phillips approach

As I said on another thread, it's probably a complete non-event over dramatized by holloway who has a bee in his bonnet over most events. He just doesn't want to loose his best player, and he's going to do anything to stop that happening.

At least, if anything, it shows our interest...!

As long as you keep saying "loose" when you mean "lose" I just can't take you seriously - sorry :)

Adkins confirms interest in Matt Phillips.

The claims made by Blackpool that winger Matt Phillips is illegally on Saints’ radar came as a disappointment to Adkins who explained that the club has acted with integrity as usual.

“It’s a shame that Blackpool have had to go and do things via the media in the way that they have done,” Nigel explained.

“I don’t think there is any hiding from the fact that Matt is a player that we have been an admirer of for the past few years, and I think in the last couple of weeks he has probably been identified as a target for a number of teams in the Premier League.

“I know that from the Chairman’s point of view he has been in contact with the Blackpool Chairman and that we have had a conversation with their Chief Executive, and I have spoken to Ian Holloway myself, so it’s not as if there has not been an interest demonstrated from Southampton.

“As I have said, we like to think that we do everything properly, by the book and we will continue to do our matters privately and behind the scenes. Obviously this situation has now arisen and we will take action on that and respond in the appropriate manner.”

It seems that: 1. Holloway is concerned that we may get Phillips and has decided to try and publicly shame us in order to cool our interest, or 2. The media have got it wrong and holloway was referring to a different club and Saints have just approached with integrity and legally.

Either way, we do want him, which is good news especially after tonight...

Nigel confirmed that there has been club to club contact, so it's not like this was a behind the scenes tap-up. Holloway was also very critical of Phillips' agent, so perhaps the agent jumped the gun rather than us. Still, we probably shouldn't have talked to him.

I did say earlier there was a rumour doing the rounds that it was infact Villa who 'tapped him up' and we had made an official enquiry/bid and Adkins comments tonight only go to add more substance to that.

There's actually a few rumours that it was Villa who tapped him up but we have made an official bid. Who knows? Will it ever come out who did it?

Where did you hear that, only place I've seen this rumour posted is on one of those fake ITK twitters.

There is a 'ITK' dude on Twitter saying it was us but also some other tweets last night after the story broke that it was Villa and not Saints. As I said, it is a rumour but Adkins has now added more fuel to it by his comments tonight.

Does he? He doesn't actually deny that we made an illegal approach.

Typical Holloway, don't know what his problem is apart from being a brainless idiot. No different to the conversations clubs have had with us in the past and I can even remember Wenger stating on Arsenal's OS that he wanted to sign Chamberlain (clear tapping up and not something we've done with Phillips, well until Ian Holloway had blurted the cat out of the bag).

Nevertheless, we need at least two offensive players with pace so we need to act quickly on deciding whether Phillips justifies the hassle or whether Zaha or other pace targets are just as good and easier to get done this coming week.

I wouldn't be concerned apart from the fact we still need 2 CBs as well and the manager needs to prepare for playing the champions away opening game. We struck gold with Jos this time last year, let's hope we can strike gold across 4-5 signings this time because our hopes of being competitive fully depend on it.

Well he does because according to NA, we've contacted the chairman of Blackpool, spoke their chief executive and Adkins has even had a chat with their manager. An illegal approach is going directly to the player in a private meeting. Going by his comments, it doesn't seem we've done that?

Or the player's agent, even if it's at the instigation of the agent.

Quite possible that we did that but without them accepting a bid, I thought it is still illegal to talk to their agent?

I absolutely love Ian Holloway and his interviews.....and I love the way he tries everything to belittle each and every club that tries to buy his best players. Great value for money (often hilarious) and great manager. Maybe it is because he is exactly the same age as me :)

By the way, I would be ecstatic to get Matt Phillips, and I don't believe for one minute that Cortese would make any sort of illegal approach. It would be great to be a fly on the wall if Cortese and Holloway ever got shut in a room together to discuss the transfer :D

Of course they have, of course. It's their anti Saints agenda coming out and they've totally made it up for attention. When they dreamed up the story in Daily Mail towers they sat around thinking which Premier League club would draw most attention to the article. They could have picked any premier league club, Man United, Tottenham, Arsenal, but no, they decided the club that would get this article most attention was Southampton.

Probably, particularly when there is no evidence in the article that it is us in the form of a direct quote, that the Mail are the only news outlet that are reporting it's us and with the Daily Fail's record of totally ridiculous non-sensical sensationalist articles.

With a paper famous for headlines such as 'EATING NOODLES CAN CAUSE CANCER' I pretty much disregard anything the Mail publishes.

Well the local Paper in Blackpool says its us as well so I wouldn't be so quick to disregard the 'daily fail' (lol) as making up stories just for attention sunshine.

The Gazette makes the Daily Fail look like the fount of all knowledge. The editorial standard is probably worse than the Pompey Pravda.

You're a bad man Turkish. It's getting like people can't talk bolllocks on here no more without someone pointing it out. If you keep driving away all the people talking bolllocks there ain't gonna be no-one left!

I can't believe he's chosen to win the Stadium Size War with MLG by usurping him in the role of Factual Pedant.

Maybe there was more substance in the Daily Mail article than I thought, surprising. Still a poorly written article in my opinion.

This forum probably makes up 25% of the Southampton area's Daily Mail readership so I didn't expect anyone to take my reservations of the Daily Mail's 'well-respected' sources seriously.

I thought he said that tried to talk to their chairman. You don't have to talk to the player directly, just talking to his agent without the clubs official approval is enough to constitute an offence.

We may well of spoke to manager and CEO, doesn't necessarily mean we got approval to speak to the players reps. It seems only the chairman of Blackpool can approve that at that club.

Karl Oyston, Blackpool's chairman, was just on TalkSport. He confirmed its Southampton that he's reported for an illegal approach, as well as an agent.

“We are still actively working to bring players in,” he stated. “I know that we are working very hard and having spoken to the Chairman yesterday I am very excited because I know how hard he is working to make things happen.

“We have been out and about identifying players and as we have said, we will do all of that privately and behind the scenes because until they sign that piece of paper they aren’t your player.”

It was quite funny actually. He was being pressed by Andy Goldstein on who the club was and he didn't want to say.

"We've reported a club and an agent, I'm not saying which club."

"Is it Southampton?"

"I'm not saying which club it was, but we've reported a club and an agent."

"It's being reported that its Southampton you've reported though, is that correct?"

"I'm not saying which club......oh it's going to come out anyway. Yes, it's southampton we've reported, and an agent."

To be fair he did at the end insinuate it was more the fault of the agent than the club.

he does not say that they had spoke as the OS claim..

I don't think we've got anything to worry about. It's clearly the agent who has gone behind the clubs back and made contact with us (maybe because we couldn't make headway with their chairman?).

We were then probably a little naive in opening a bit of dialog, but I can't imagine anything happening to us apart from a little slapped wrist. The agent could be in trouble though.

Adkins says he HAD spoken to Holloway and Cortese HAS spoken to the Chief Exec.

Plus if the agent is also being reported then Phillips obviously keen...or his agent is.

and their CEO or manager cannot give us the go ahead to talk to the players reps.. only their chairman has that authority at B'pool.

Sounds like we tried to talk him, but failed to contact him, but still went ahead anyway.

That could spell trouble:?

The Chief Exec can certainly give authority otherwise what's the point of him.
