it is a massive game on Saturday.

I dont like the shape of the team, they seem to have "lost the plot" at the back, could be Clyne bedding in and why is a striker Jay R playing on the wing FFS

We have to beat "the eyeties" and beat them convincingly as we do look shaky as the Man City game looms and no Jack Cork

Worried in the New Forest I am !!!!:uhoh:

Its OK, I have the master plan...

Play the reserves up at Man City, where we will lose anyway, then have the entire first team squad fit and ready for the Wigan game at St Mary's the following week.

Simple - even gives the fringe players and U21s chance of glory.

Also - get 2 x CBs

Agreed. If we don't win by 2 goals we're sure to be relegated.

The two friendlies against Ajax and Wolves were pretty pedestrian performances. Plusses, Clyne, Hoiveldt, Fox, Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse, Sharp. Gazzaniga showed well. Minuses, Rodriguez not really showed much, certainly not pacy. Lallana isn't the same presence inside. Lambert looks well off the pace. Fonte's performances littered with mistakes. Richardson just generally poor. Guly was decent playing with Clyne but poor with Richardson. We lack pace out of midfield and Davis doesn't look to have much either in the short time he was on.

The 4-5-1 gives plenty of possession but most of it going nowhere and apart from Clyne no rapid breakout. I suspect we may suffer a bit because this doesn't look like a team that has the important players in their favoured positions. It doesn't look like we are getting much out of Lambert, Lallana and Rodriguez and struggle to create much up front. In the much sharper environment of the Premier I can't see goals anywhere playing like this.

Centre back, and a bit more pace will be vital if we aren't going to struggle.

Just for balance; a Man City side featuring Joe Hart, Gael Clichy, Joleon Lescott, James Milner, Samir Nasri, Nigel de Jong and Roque Santa Cruz lost in their pre-season game on Tuesday. To Oldham.

Maybe on the back of that we're favourites for next Sunday's game?

Oh I remembered Tokyos I was setting a cunning bear-trap for Dunes! We should really co-ordinate our attacks better, the pm system is for more than porn you know!

Doh! Dumb Tokyo!

Sorry Bear, should never have doubted you.

Sorry for derailing this thread. So has he signed yet or whatever?

I see people are still reading too much into friendly's, again. The intensity isn't the same as it would be in a competitive game, so you're not going to see amazing ''stand out'' performances during pre-season.

We're on the brink of one of our most exciting seasons in years, and years, yet for some reason the general mood is of ''dread'' and ''everything is all bad''. It actually isn't.

As a club we're going places, we've just got promoted to the PL by back to back promotions, as fans we should be as high as a kite, so why aren't we? What more do you want or expect?

Expectations seem a bit screwed on here.

IMO, so many are just used to winning, used to being billy big bollix and used to playing teams off the park many weeks

the realisation that this will not happen that much is hitting home..the tail end of last season was full of the prem being average, we can easily finish mid table..

now, it is a air of doom and gloom...the manager is on the verge of the sack, the website is crap, the new kit is not that popular, we have not spent as much as some thought....we have an almighty start to the season.......this place is going to be grim reading....if we don't beat wigan at home..some will lose the plot as they feel we "should" beat wigan

Two things you can certainly see is what the team are trying to do and the competency of the individuals. It doesn't take a lot to see that Clyne is dynamic and a player that pushes on. On the other hand Lallana and Lambert have still some way to go. Rodriguez doesn't look comfortable or threatening in this formation. Three of the back four have been competent but Fonte looks fallible with some crass errors and a failure to win headers mostly fouling in the process. Last season was the first in ages that we achieved results early on but we were pretty settled in our team play. A new system trying to shoehorn in the players we have that may prefer to be playing in a different way may not work out. Time will tell but Saturday is the final try out. It may be the way to play away but we are slow on the break.

Trouble is, people seem to forget that these are pre-season games and not ones we are going out to win, but to test the team, tactics, formation, individuals ont he fringe and experiment, plus as a training tool.

That is why i give a 'meh' to us winning, losing or drawing these games, as if we were going out to win, we would have the difinitive first 11, not make so many substitutes AND give the team an incentive to win, like for every goal they score, they get a mars bar, For every game they win their wives/girlfriends will be released unharmed and for every goal scored against us, a little kitten dies.

Q - Am I entirely confident that our pre-season campaign has built up such a head of steam that we'll start the season strongly ?

A - Can't say I am.

Q - Do I think we have done enough (as yet) in the transfer market to fully optimise our chances of staying up ?

A - Not really.

Q - Where (as things stand) do I think we will finish the season ?

A - Bottom six I should think.

Q - Might two or three more good signings restore my moral and sense of confidence ?

A - Almost certainly.

Q - Is it natural for a football fan to worry about the prospects of his club before the season even starts ?

A - Oh yes.

He didn't look threatening in the Burnley 4-4-2 side when I saw him against us either. Someone put my mind at rest and tell me this lad is pure class as his signing just got a meh from me and one average performance in a friendly against Ajax is not much for me to go on. Looking forward to seeing him for real

The back 4 is no where near good enough for life in the Prem. This will be highlighted when Man City put 4, 5 or 6 past us on the opening day.

like they did against Swansea on the opening day of last season. Swansea's back four turned out to be ****e as well, they were relegated in March too...

****ing defeatism on here is painful. Fonte is not ****, nor is Richardson. World beaters? No. But steady enough. I'd be much more concerned with whether we have enough pace and goals up front.

me too, and the goalie of course but as everyone else thinks Kelv will be adequate, then I guess that that's just me. :uhoh:

Your certainly not alone, I am indeed an optimist, however even I struggle to be completely filled with optimism when our first season in prem is met by the signing of unproven youthful prospects.

Steven Davis doesn't quite fit that description. Not sure he's any good mind. Out of interest would you prefer Phillips from Blackpool or Jarvis from Wolves?

How about Steven Fletcher or Jay Rodriguez?

Clyne or Tony Hibbert?

Craig Gordan or Paolo Gazzaniga?
