We are the famous Southampton and we're in the Movie

I was watching Mission Impossible last night, and during a scene set in a hotel in Liverpool Street, London, Tom Cruise is doing something and the radio is on, and it is about The Premier League, and we are mentioned, unfortunately the order of words are broken up, but it is West Ham, relegation Southampton. The film was released in 1996, probably filmed a 95, I can't remember year by year, but was that a 'Great Escape' season? Winning against Everton on the last day, or was it the Wimbledon year?

I was thinking back to other mentions of us or players on non related tv, my other example is once on Eastenders, Nigel was talking to Ian Beale and they were talking about some five a side team they were doing, and Nigels says of one player, "He's hardly Matt Le Tissier is he?"

if you go back far enough, you might (want to forget) the infamous movie...Yesterdays Hero (1979) about a recovering alcoholic football star (no not George Best - well... almost ).

The film starred Ian McShane, Suzanne Somers (wow!)... and the former 60's pop star Terry Nelhams (sorry - Adam Faith to you).

A very poor script based on a book by Jackie Collins but the "team " to which he was attached was loosely based on the Saints, although only a few shots were of (then) Saints 'players but the football scenes were of the Saints v. Notts Forest League Cup Final from the prev.season. All of the film's " footballers " were very poor actors - most of whom looked incredibly unfit and couldn't kick a sleeping dog....but nevertheless the cinemas in town were full of Saints' fans who went to see it.

Yep it was a **** film, the team was called "The Saints" if i remember rightly and Ian McShane looked as fit as Neil Ruddock after a night out at McDonalds. Tried to find it, not for the oscar winning performances, but as a piece of Saints memorabilia, only ever saw it on VHS (thats video to you youngsters)

In one of the crowd scenes, my old next-door neighbour was shown in close-up through the fence, after we had let a goal in. I burst out laughing at the ABC or Odeon when I saw it.

The other team was called Leicester Forest, so as they could use the League Cup final as a backdrop

I think it is likely to be last day of 93/94 when we stayed up by drawing at West Ham. This is most likely considering how long it takes to make a movie and obviously they would be playing back previous typical British radio commentary.

the way it started it didnt sound like the last day, they mentioned Shearer scoring for Blackburn and them being top or thereabouts.

And dont you think that when they were filming they used live radio?

I remember this coming up before. Wasn't the TV on in a pub, not the radio? I have a memory of Leicester maybe being on TV, either that or Darius Vassell!!

no, they seemed to be in a hotel room, definately the radio.

Maybe I'm thinking of another film then; this was also a blockbuster but the scene was in a London pub and there was a football game on the TV. Could have sworn it Mission Impossible, there we go.

In an episode of "Man About the House" in the 70's, Richard O'Sullivan's character was a Saints fan and was travelling down from London for a home match v. Arsenal, on his moped. One of the girls (Sally Thomsett?) wanted to go and after the inevitable hilarious consequences, they never made it.

On getting home he was told we had lost 4-0. Obviously rubbish as we only ever lost 1-0 to the Gooners at that time. 4-0's were 20 years later, courtesy of Ian Wright.

I can remember watching an episode of Juliet Bravo back in the mid eighties, there was a scene where Sgt George Parrish was telling someone in the custody cells to "pipe down". The chap in the cell was drunk and singing "Oh when the saints" at the top of his voice. Sgt Parrish then said something like "You're a long way from the Dell now sonny". It was brilliant at the time.
