niemi14 Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 With his goalscoring form in preseason, I think Billy Sharp deserves to be in the starting XI for the Man City game. Goalscoring is a habit, no matter who you are playing against, and I think he is our most 'natural' goalscorer. If there is a loose ball in the 18 yard box I feel he is would be the best candidate of all our strikers to put the ball in the net.
Stu Man Do Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 Reminds me of connollys pre season last year. Came into the season firing on all cylinders and scored some vital goals in the first 4 games. On form probably a starter against city.
S-Clarke Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 I've said on another thread, I don't actually think he fits our style from the start. Bringing him on for the last 20mins when we need a goal is fine, and could be quite fruitful.
alpine_saint Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 Yes, he should start. Much as he is our saviour, sounds to me from his pre-season effort that Rickie needs to be benched for this game.
Saint Garrett Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 I'd agree that it sounds like he should be playing. Wouldn't be surprised to see him start in the middle of 3, with Guly and J-Rod either side. Lallana in the middle with Morgan and Davis.
Jack Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 I don't think he should start if we're playing 4-3-3/4-5-1. He just doesn't have enough presence or hold the ball up well enough. We're not going to have much of the ball against city, when we do get it, we'll need an outlet. As much as I like Billy and think he's a good finisher, he doesn't suit that formation. He may well be our best bet as someone who'd finish a chance at the moment, but I can't see him getting any chances at city. We need Jay Rod or Rickie up there to at least try to give their defence a problem.

I know this is championship but they were a poor team and he was relatively prolific there. I wouldn't rule out his ability to do that role. Professor Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 I'd have Billy Sharp start as the form player but hopefully not in a 4-4-3 against MC away. 4-4-2 please, Nigel, and get the two banks of 4 fully disciplined over the next week. I'd also leave out the 2 CBs we haven't bought yet, even if we've bought them by then. If we haven't then of course leaving them out's not a problem..... Funnily enough my assertion that he'll play more Prem matches than Lambert next season was based on this - though there is the possibility Rodriguez will take over Lambert's mantle as well. Or we might persist with Rickie, will be interesting to see.

I think pre-season has made it pretty clear that we'll be playing some variation of 4-3-3/4-5-1 this season. How are 2 banks of 4 better at defending than a bank of 4 and a bank of 5 anyway ? I wouldn't rule out his ability to do that role. Based on his performance against Wolves, a 'good' championship side, he's not good enough to play that role. He didn't have a bad game, but he won't get a sniff against good defenders. His first touch is too loose, he's not big enough physically to hold up any high balls into him, and he's not quick. I rate Billy and he'll do ok against the poorer teams in the prem, if he's got someone up there close to him, but he simply hasn't got anything in the locker to trouble good sides. Chez Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 Lambert must be having a shocker of a pre-season for fans to be calling for him to be dropped in favour of Sharp.

Sooner...(but hopefully later) he'll have difficulty to get a starting place. Till then, Billy and Jay Rod will play second fiddle... until they find form, and take over the top scoring role. niemi14 Posted 8 August, 2012 Author Share Posted 8 August, 2012 Lambert must be having a shocker of a pre-season for fans to be calling for him to be dropped in favour of Sharp. The aim of my original post was not to call for Lambert to be dropped ... Just to say Sharp has been in good form in the warm up games.
