Bearsy Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Give me a break. When he says "the spirit of 1939 Germany" he don't mean gassing jews or whatever. He's talking bout fervent nationalism and brainwashed citizens supporting a corrupt and fascist state. I mean that's bolllocks too obviously but ain't nearly as bad as the Nazi headlines is making out. The Smiths was before my time but I listen to them quite a lot, so I'm a bit on his side generally. When it comes to Morrissey I have "the spirit of 1939 Germany"!

I think the royals are tools (William & Harry excluded) & I'm a republican but Morrisey is a total bell end for saying it's akin to 1939 Germany. The UK is a better place that it was 2 weeks ago. Quotes from the Sky article : "Morrissey was also heavily critical of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June, comparing her reign to a dictatorship and describing the celebrations as "a new lesson in the force of tyranny": Morrissey spouting b0ll0cks and completely misunderstanding the nature of a Constitutional Monarchy. "The 'dazzling royals' have, quite naturally, hijacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs": Headline grabbing sensationalist nonsense. "As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters.": I can see his point - I do not think that nationally the 'legacy' will amount to much, and there is an element of distraction from economic realities. As the Romans put it "Bread and Circuses". The allusion to Germany in 1939 is about the power of propaganda, although he could have picked a less contentious example. Sheaf Saint Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Exactly. So all the ones one here who were anti the jubilee and royals will agree with, or at least empathise with his comments, surely? Well I wasn't in favour of the Jubilee as I'm not a royalist, and I've never been afraid to admit I'm not exactly the most patriotic of British citizens, but the Olympics is the Olympics and politics doesn't, or shouldn't come into it. It's a global celebration of sport, and the way that the British public has warmed to so many of the competitors from outside of the UK kind of piddles all over Morrisey's comparison to Nazi Germany. He's nothing but a musical has-been who craves a bit of attention and deliberately courts controversy in a desperate attempt to remain relevant. This is entirely true. Moz was truly a spectatcular musician, but his star has faded and nowadays he's nothing short of an angry, old-fashioned and extreme political activist. Are their any other words commonly understood to be perjorative that you think are appropriate to use, maybe to do with race?
carljack Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 How many drug cheats ran in the GB colours ?,its not about sport anymore, its all about money and which countries spend the most to buy their success,as Samuel Johnson said "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" remember these words when you next see Boris or David at an Olympic event where there is a whiff of a Gold Medal. jjsaint Posted 8 August, 2012 Share Posted 8 August, 2012 I read somewhere that he insisted security frisked for meat at one of his gigs. The Smiths are sh*te anyway. Methinks you missed the point with The Smiths. That's EXACTLY how they were supposed to sound, though they pre-date the "emo" tag. Very good description though.
