Give me a break. When he says "the spirit of 1939 Germany" he don't mean gassing jews or whatever. He's talking bout fervent nationalism and brainwashed citizens supporting a corrupt and fascist state. I mean that's bolllocks too obviously but ain't nearly as bad as the Nazi headlines is making out.

The Smiths was before my time but I listen to them quite a lot, so I'm a bit on his side generally. When it comes to Morrissey I have "the spirit of 1939 Germany"!

This is what the plums on here don't understand, you're quite right in what you say Bearsy. As for his comments about the royals, I'm sure all the ones on here slagging off the royals during the jubilee will be on here soon to back every word Morrisey has said.

this is Morrissey the famous racist right?

tool

Nah bro, i know you're being mischievious or whatever but i'm sticking up for Morrissey on this thread and getting famously accused of not liking reggae ain't the same as being famously racist!

I think the royals are tools (William & Harry excluded) & I'm a republican but Morrisey is a total bell end for saying it's akin to 1939 Germany.

The UK is a better place that it was 2 weeks ago.

Quotes from the Sky article :

"Morrissey was also heavily critical of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June, comparing her reign to a dictatorship and describing the celebrations as "a new lesson in the force of tyranny": Morrissey spouting b0ll0cks and completely misunderstanding the nature of a Constitutional Monarchy.

"The 'dazzling royals' have, quite naturally, hijacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs": Headline grabbing sensationalist nonsense.

"As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters.": I can see his point - I do not think that nationally the 'legacy' will amount to much, and there is an element of distraction from economic realities. As the Romans put it "Bread and Circuses".

The allusion to Germany in 1939 is about the power of propaganda, although he could have picked a less contentious example.

Exactly. So all the ones one here who were anti the jubilee and royals will agree with, or at least empathise with his comments, surely?

Well I wasn't in favour of the Jubilee as I'm not a royalist, and I've never been afraid to admit I'm not exactly the most patriotic of British citizens, but the Olympics is the Olympics and politics doesn't, or shouldn't come into it. It's a global celebration of sport, and the way that the British public has warmed to so many of the competitors from outside of the UK kind of piddles all over Morrisey's comparison to Nazi Germany.

He's nothing but a musical has-been who craves a bit of attention and deliberately courts controversy in a desperate attempt to remain relevant.

This is entirely true. Moz was truly a spectatcular musician, but his star has faded and nowadays he's nothing short of an angry, old-fashioned and extreme political activist.

Morrissey was an important figure in the history of pop music and in my teen years whilst heading The Smiths, but his solo stuff has never been much cop and now he's just a fat big-mouthed poof.[/QUOTE]

So what's your point? That you're a homophobic bellend?

Nope. Have nothing at all against homosexuals. Worked in gay bars and shared a house with a gay lad as a student. Have always defended people's rights to have sex and love whoever they want.

But Morrissey is a poof.

I'm sorry, when I saw the perjorative word 'poof' I leapt to my crass assumption.

Are their any other words commonly understood to be perjorative that you think are appropriate to use, maybe to do with race?

How many drug cheats ran in the GB colours ?,its not about sport anymore, its all about money and which countries spend the most to buy their success,as Samuel Johnson said "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" remember these words when you next see Boris or David at an Olympic event where there is a whiff of a Gold Medal.

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour!!!!!!

I've just notice Dune has been b-anned (again). What for this time?

Photo of a black female GB athlete / photo of female ape. You can workout the rest.

Why so surprised? It's always bubbling under with him,

I do wonder if he actually has a mental health issue, if so he should really seek help.

I read somewhere that he insisted security frisked for meat at one of his gigs. The Smiths are sh*te anyway. The lyrics sound like they were written by a 14-year-old emo and the music sounds like it was composed by the emo's mate to sing at his funeral after he died by drinking bleach.

He walked off-stage at some festival as he could smell meat cooking from one of the nearby food stalls. Moron.

Methinks you missed the point with The Smiths.

That's EXACTLY how they were supposed to sound, though they pre-date the "emo" tag.

Very good description though.

I liked them when I was young but I grew tired of the whingeing. But then again I still listen to Leonard Cohen so I can't point any fingers.

Anyone who thinks smiths songs were depressing just don't get it, songs like heaven knows i'm miserable now were more humerous than depressing.

Yes, "Suffer Little Children", "Meat is Murder", "Headmaster Ritual" and "This Night Has Opened my Eyes" were hours of fun for the whole family

1939 Nazi Germany...hmm... ;)

Man watching Olympics arrested based on his manner, his state of dress, proximity to the course and because he was not smiling. Police questioned him about his demeanour and why he had not been seen to be visibly enjoying the event.
