kwsaint Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 After watching the hockey in the olympics, it got me wondering if a sin-bin would work in football. Their system works like this: Green card: Warning Yellow card: Sin-bin Red card: Dismissal Your thoughts?

Stoozer Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 I think it's a good idea. Football has a lot to learn and should embrace change quicker, imho.
toofarnorth Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Yeah i'd be all for it. Would have to rejig sub rules slightly though so you can accommodate keepers getting sent to the sinbin.
The Kraken Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 I could only see it working in an attempt to cut out the relentless criticism and abuse of referees by players. 10 minutes in the bin for shouting at the ref or linesman wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, and might get these pampered f*ckwits to actually think about what they're doing. Unfortunately thats something in the game which has permeated to all levels; a lad I used to play with was scouted by a Wessex League side and the manager said he was especially impressed with the way he "controlled the ref", i.e. constantly in his ear whinging. Players are now encouraged by the manager to get in the ref's ear and put the officials under pressure. Its a very sad state that its been allowed to happen. positivepete Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Five a side has a sin bin using a blue card system. Would save a lot of administration at local league level but deny the local FA of revenue. As for professional football, I am not sure it would help, teams would soon adapt to being one man down for a short period.
skintsaint Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 the way refs hand out yellow cards it wouldn't be surprising to see teams reduced to 10 a side regularly which would ruin games for me.
Golden Balls Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Not keen on sin bins but I would love it if they had a rule where only the captain can talk to the ref
Patrick Bateman Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Think this is a good idea. Football has SO much to learn from Rugby and Hockey and so on. Goal line technology - yes Video reply/3rd eye - yes Sin bin - yes Move the free kick 10 yards for back chat - yes Captains only talking to the ref - yes Respect for the ref - yes It wouldn't detract from the sport, it would just make it more modern, to go with their modern equipment and modern fitness regimes! skintsaint Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Move the free kick 10 yards for back chat - yes thought this was tried a few seasons back? Is the rule still in place or did they scrap it?
Flyer Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Id prefer them to use their common sense and not give yellows for fouls that are 1 10th late or are a complete accident and just give yellows for cynical fouls and not genuine attempts to win the ball. Born In The 80s Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 I've wanted a sin bin rule for ages. I agree with Patrick Bateman's post entirely. I think football is too scared of change. I've watched many games that have been destroyed by referees sending players off, as they are following the 'letter of the law'. Take the last man rule. So many reds have been given to players who make a legitimate attempt to play the ball, but just mistime their tackle and bring the striker down. For me the penalty for that needs to be stronger than just a yellow, but much less severe than a red (and a penalty for the foul). Then you slap a 3 game ban on him as well? All for a mistimed tackle?? Madness, IMO. A sin bin, would be perfect. 15 minutes out the game as a punishment, then back on. I'd also like to see sin bin used for a 'professional foul'. You hear this term used a lot. "##### will be quite happy to take a yellow in that situation". These deliberate fouls, like were defenders pull down pacy forwards on the halfway-line and 'take' a yellow, should carry much greater punishment. Again, 15 mins in a sin bin would be ideal. Moral of the story is, there needs to be something between, a yellow card (technically just a warning nowadays) and a red card (sent off and banned for 3 games). Barry the Badger Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 thought this was tried a few seasons back? Is the rule still in place or did they scrap it? It was, but sometimes it penalised the attacking team by moving the ball too close to goal and making the free kick harder. A better system might've been to allow the attacking team to place the ball wherever they liked within a 10 yard radius, or something along those lines. Thedelldays Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Thing is. Football. No one likes change what so ever. Rules, kit, websites.... People don't like change when it comes to off-field elements Goal line technology will come but that has been debated for a decade.
DJ_TOAST Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Can we get allowed fights introduced like hockey too ? quite like to see some of Liverpool, Manure & Chelsea players get a kicking (Terry, Carroll, Saurez), reckon Lee have some good moves to throw at them. krissyboy31 Posted 7 August, 2012 Share Posted 7 August, 2012 Straight red for serious foul play should stay but some of the pathetic "two bookables" we see could well be better served by a sin bin IMO.
