“@SimonPeach: #SaintsFC moving for Japan's Maya Yoshida would not surprise me. His name was mentioned to Nigel Adkins, who didn't flinch. I thought 'who?'”

“@SimonPeach: I pride myself on my football knowledge but Yoshida a new one on me. Makes sense seeing as #SaintsFC already have a Japanese translator.”

Because having a translator already is the reason to buy a player...

I know you can't judge a player based on a team's performance or results, but 77 goals conceded in 34 games last season is a lot. Just sayin like.

True on both counts.

Whilst I haven't researched his role in it, the Japan U23 team at the Olympics did quite well defensively. Admittedly against a mixed bag of opposition.

Seems to be reported as a done deal, so I guess we'll be able to tell for ourselves soon.

It's wrong to stereotype, so I will do so here...but I've always been impressed with the work-rate, temp and commitment of players from East Asia.

My mate was at Japan vs Mexico in the Olympics today. I told him before he went to watch out for Yoshida, his first words to me when he came through the door after the game were "Sign him". Apparently he was immense. Also Japan's #7 put in an excellent shift, looked very tidy on the ball, good passing and movement and caused Mexico's defence a lot of trouble. That's Yuki Ohtsu, 21 year old midfielder who plays for Gladbach. He also came very highly recommended by my mate (praise from Caesar!).

I was at Japan v Mexico and having seen him linked with us I kept an eye out and he didn't look anything special - Mexico scored a header from a corner and 3 goals, after all. Can't judge anyone on one match though, that Giovanni Dos Santos of Mexico looked decent for a start...

maybe the two of you were watching different things.? It's not possible to follow the play in all parts of the pitch at the same time.

I don't know if you were at the Etihad on Sunday,(I watched on TV), but there is always a lot going on .. off-camera ..that the ref. doesn't always see until afterwards ..to his chagrin.

Whilst the Guly-knockers are still visible and in full voice, it was interesting to note that Gary Neville commented (on Guly's performance on Sunday) that, although off camera much of the time he (Guly) was making lots of runs back and forth but ...nobody was passing to him. (Interestingly, Guly's runs were clocked at over 20 mph...faster than any other Saints player) .

Well, it's easier to see everything going on and the pattern of play from the top of the 3rd tier at Wembley - I'd be reluctant to say any central defender at a pro level who plays in a side which concedes 3 goals looked "immense", especially when one goal was an unmarked header in the box from a set piece. Japan weren't otherwise appalling or anything. He was decent, and he was also one of the players I was keeping an eye on. Nothing "bad", but nothing stellar by any stretch.

As for the Etihad, I went, and I've also seen the highlights twice and am in the process of watching the whole thing again in full (up to half time so far). I've already posted similar comments about Guly in other threads (mainly in discussions about Lambert's role), as Neville said he made 3 or 4 runs off camera at one point. You're perfectly right that people can see different things at games though.

Is this the same Mexico that won gold at the Olympics and beat Brazil doing it? Just saying like.

I didn't claim we did but we were looking like likely promotion candidates. We bought lee at least with the premier league in mind.

Not saying you claimed that. More out of curiosity - whether the lack of activity is due to failure to identify a target/agree a fee or just different priorities. In contrast to strikers, we heard very little about getting a defender in January (admittedly not as if we would know) suggesting it hasnt been a priority until very recently.

I think most supporters at least considered it an area we had to concentrate on since at least January as we only had Martin (not ready for the prem) as backup with Seaborne out.

Interesting.

As one of two CBs then he sounds good, but if he is the only addition at CB then Im not sure he is an immediate improvement on what we have - soley based on his experience so far.

Would be asking a lot for him to suddenly come in and make a huge difference to the backline.

No offence, but I think I'd rather trust the scouting departments judgement.

Lets hope they get this right. Not at all convinced on Ramirez, Slyne, Jay Rod and Steven Davidson. FFS - our Recruitment Department makes Office Angels look good.

They've left it too late anyway to get anyone of quality in. We've been gazumped for all our top targets and anyone we bring in now is a last minute gamble like Jos was last year.

I know for a fact that Adkins was accidently reminded only last week that we need a new CB when his Microsoft Office Outlook sent him an old Calendar reminder from last January.
