Saints vs Wolves

It's being said Wolves will be a good test because they have hung on to their 'star' players but lets not build up a relegated side too much - they finished bottom last year with only 5 wins. If Saints aren't significantly better than Wolves, where would that leave us? This game may convince Cortese, if he is blocking Adkins' transfer targets, that he needs to get the cheque book out very quickly. On the other hand we might give Wolves a tonking and the club will decide the team is already good enough. Interesting, but it doesn't feel like a tonking coming on.

We've spent over £10million already (reportedly), I think it's safe to say the cheque book is already out.

Unless we're paying cash in hand to avoid tax.

Can see it being a draw.

Really hope Lambert steps it up a bit.

Would be interesting to see Jarvis play. I really wanted us to sign him and it seems we once had an interest. I think him and Clyne would have been perfect together.

How many do we expect for the attendance? I'd guess around 7-8k

Me and 4 others going, think attendance will be less than the Ajax match.

Not sure about that as it's not on tv, but if there's a decent crowd it'll probably be from walkup. We seem to have a lot of home friendlies this summer - it's also a very LONG close season due to the early end for Euro2012 and relatively late start due to England not having a major tournament in Summer 2013.

You say it like that's a good thing? That's absolute peanuts in the PL.

The clubs that NC and Adkins bang on about overtaking spend that per player.

I posted this on the other thread but its completely wrong to say we're not spending - there are 12 others teams that have spent less so far this summer:

As we go into the Wolves friendly, its not accurate to say we "are" spending, only that we "were" spending or have spent: using The Echo's figures, its £13m on three first team players and a reserve GK but the last "spend" was Gazzanega, 2 weeks ago so the cheque book has been back in the drawer for the last fortnight. No doubt other teams have spent less, but those teams are already full of Premier League players. Tomorrow we will see how our Championship team with just a few additions, manages against the worst Prem team of last season. Do well, and maybe Cortese will not give Adkins the players he wants. Do not so well and the pressure will be on to move in the transfer market as Adkins has openly said he wants to do, but it may already be too late to put together a defence that can hold out against Man City.

Wolves squad:

Aaron McCarey, Eggert Jonsson, Kevin Foley, Christophe Berra and Matt Doherty are also named in the squad to take on newly promoted Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

Several players are not being risked as a precaution including Dorus De Vries (groin), Steven Fletcher (ankle), Matt Jarvis (groin) and Jamie O’Hara (groin) but new signings Tongo Doumbia and Björn Sigurdarson are both in the squad.

Carl Ikeme also returns having missed the game at Shrewsbury with a slight knee injury. Kick off is 3pm.

SQUAD FOR SOUTHAMPTON: Ikeme, McCarey, Zubar, Johnson, Stearman, Ward, Davis, Doumbia, Henry, Forde, Doyle, Sigurdarson, Ebanks-Blake, Foley, Berra, Jonsson, Doherty.

Having seen that squad we should look quite a bit better than Wolves, will be a good benchmark.

See we are spending! We've signed pretty much all of Wolves players.

Be interesting to see what the attendance is... How much is an adult ticket? Only 5000 at Ajax at £20 a ticket - the same price I paid to watch two Olympic football matches (including Team GB) the following day.

Adult tickets are £15. Kids ones have £10 on them, but were free with the Adult tickets when I picked mine up, so £30 for two adults and 2 kids isn't bad value IMHO.

im pretty sure from past experiences of staff members making coments in the press that nigel wouldnt be saying anything about new players or spending money without NC's express consent

There will be 2,000 max.

I'll be in the Olympic Stadium tomorrow but I wouldn't have bothered even if I was free.

Well, if we're taking bets on this, you said 12k last week for Ajax, I said 5K.

You say 2k tomorrow so I'll take a pop at 4K.

They should just open the gates tomorrow (and just about every other friendly aka training exercise) and let everyone in for free. To be honest, I still wouldn't bother.

That's how I got in for the Liebherr Cup, I recommend it.

I am pretty damn sure that the result of this match will in no way effect the signing, or lack of, any additional players.

I am pretty sure that Adkins and Cortese would have sat down after promotion and discussed what was required for us squad wise this coming season.

Someone like our chairman would not say, "I'll get you a few of the players you have asked for but will then decide whether you get any more or not depending on the performance against Wolves'.

And if you seriously think otherwise then I'll have a little bet with you, for charity, if you like. You seem to think that should we win we will not sign any new players. So here is the offer: if we win and don't sign any more players by the end of the transfer window I will send a cheque for £100 to Granty to pay to the charity of your choice. If we win and DO sign someone else you do likewise for the charity of my choice.

Wanna go for it?

I'll be there with nippers in tow for my only pre-season expedition.

While the result isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things of course, a win would nevertheless still be a welcome boost to moral. I know a certain Lambert worshiping 5 year old who certainly does not share in the unenthusiastic reaction to this match many on here seem to hold.

We are likely to get walloped but I doubt we will sign any players of significance as we are going for the 'yoyo' strategy.

We will not get "walloped" by wolves. We'd have beaten them last year and this year we have improved the team. Do you actually watch any games before making these "predictions"? Doesn't seem like it.

Please don't quote that t0sser all he does is post sh1te to get a reaction - I can't believe anyone would allow their kids to be taught by him.

Was at the ticket office yesterday sorting out a ST issue and the guy said "barely any" sold. I reckon 2,000 max

Can't see too many buying in advance for a friendly against Wolves, it will be more about a 'walk-up' today. Still can't see it attracting much above 5,000.

Hmm.. interesting starting line-up. Very much mix and match. Good chance for Stephens to prove his worth at CB and Gazzaniga in goal. Big chance for Hammond at CM and another go for Puncheon.

officialsaints: #SaintsFC starting XI vs Wolves: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Stephens, Hooiveld, Fox, Chaplow, Hammond ©, Lallana, Guly, Puncheon, Sharp.

Interesting bench as well. No Lambert, no Schneiderlin. I know Schneiderlin got a knock against Ajax but don't know re: Lambert. Also no Butterfield and Luke Shaw?

officialsaints: #SaintsFC substitutes vs Wolves: K. Davis (GK), Richardson, Fonte, Ward-Prowse, Chambers, Rodriguez, S. Davis, De Ridder, Seaborne.

Stephens at centre back. Now he's been converted from full back, does that mean he's a better young prospect than Martin, who we shipped out on loan? I've always thought Martin has looked very good when I've seen him...
