Prem 2005 v Prem 2012 - how do they compare?

It may be a little premature as we could yet sign a few others, but here's our likely squad; compared to the squad that got relegated in 2004/5.

Makes for an interesting comparison, I think. I've left out some of the players who barely featured in the Championship but included a couple of the promising kids.

2005 GKs Niemi, Smith, Poke.

2012 GKs K Davis, Gazzaniga

2005 FBs Le Saux, Telfer, Kenton, Higginbotham, Bernard, Nilsson, van Damme, Dodd, Cranie

2012 FBs Clyne, Fox, Richardson, Butterfield, Shaw

2005 CBs Lundekvam, M Svensson, Jakobsson, Davenport, Baird

2012 CBs Hooiveld, Fonte, Seaborne, Stephens

2005 DMs Prutton, Quashie, Redknapp, Folly

2012 DMs Schneiderlin, S Davis, Cork, Hammond

2005 AMs A Svensson, Delap, Fernandes, McCann, Oakley

2012 AMs Lallana, Guly, Puncheon, Chaplow, Ward-Prowse, De Ridder

2005 STs Camara, Phillips, Crouch, Ormerod, Pahars, (Beattie until Xmas)

2012 STs Rodriguez, Lambert, Sharp, Lee, Barnard

So, allowing for the odd utility player here and there, how do you think they compare ?

I have to say looking at the squads at the moment, even bearing in mind the injuries and age of some of those players in 2005, I'm a little bit more concerned about our squad than I was previously.

Wasn't this done not so long ago ?

And looking at that we definitely need a LB, CB (x2)maybe, RM/RW/ST at the very minimum.

Thing is looking at that now, I think about them players at their best for us, not how they were that season. Oakley, Pahars and Svensson were injured for the majority...Lundekvam/Davenport/Bernard were also dreadful, Baird wasn't really involved. Delap was crap, Prutton I quite liked but wasn't very good it seems, same with Folly. The only main difference is the firepower up front as we had 'proven' goalscorers. I think even though this team are maybe not as good in quality, they will try a lot harder and play for the manager, which you cant say we did in 05.

Yes.

Can someone shove up a link ? I usually see these kind of things and must have missed it entirely... guessing it was when I was on holiday 3-4 weeks ago then... tch.

Balls to it anyway, we've signed a few players since then so the outcome could be different now. :D

I didn't see the last thread that was like this either.

Apart from the keeper, I think our current defence looks better and we're likely to improve. (M.Svensson was injured pretty much all season)

Midfield is hard to judge. And again, we are likely to strengthen here anyway.

What concerns me is the srikers. Although I really rate our current strikers. The forward line we had in 2005 was quite something. All proven Premier League strikers with bags of goals. Except for Crouch I guess but he was on fire with us and went on to big things. Our current front line could thrive but could just as easily struggle.

Niemi

Le Saux

Hooiveld

Lundekvam

Clyne

Schneiderlin

Cork

A.Svensson

Lallana

Lambert

Camara

I've had a quick go... I make that a 6-5 victory for the Adkins crew! Couldn't back the choices up with evidence tho cos the 2005 win every time on evidences because by definition they've had longer careers and are more proven at top level and what not. Just gut feelings! Harsh on Crouchie I spose, I also dumped Killer cos he was injured. I also ain't sure Oakley was an AM!

This was done recently, but it was a comparison of our side against the one that played in the FA Cup final and finished 8th. The current squad didn't match up very well at all, although we've added Clyne and Davis since then.

It seems a bit pointless to me to compare our side against one that got relegated and finished last in the division (unless you consider we're worse than them, in which case we're in real trouble).

I thought exactly the same, which is strange because I would rate our strikeforce as (maybe) the strongest part of our current team.

I remember thinking Camara was great for us, but I can't remember much of what he did (other than the Norwich winner and Pompey goal in the 4-1). Crouch was great for us. But Beattie, Omerod and Pahars, while all great for us in previous seasons, didn't do a huge amount during the relegation season (I don't remember much anyway...). I think looking at those 2005 strikers on paper, by no means represents their general reputations.

So if it was a case of all our current strikers against the 2005 strikers at their best, then the 2005 lot would win.

But our current strikers against the 2005 ones based on their form in 2005, I'd have our current lot anyday.

Camara was hugely hit and miss. I remember just before he scored that Norwich goal he had the ball on the right wing and smashed it over the box and out for a throw in, and then 2 minutes later he popped up with that screamer (still probably the loudest roar I've ever heard in the stadium!)

That was sort of the point of checking.

I don't get it, please explain.

Assuming that either Adkins will be playing crab-like mostly injured midfielder, or that he thinks our current manager is better than the one we had when we got relegated, which unfortunately is by no means proven at this point.

Hasn't played since his sister's ex stabbed him in the leg, so he's certainly available.

He'll definitely be hungry then which is a plus and im sure he'll be passionate, although his damaged leg might mean he doesn't have the pace so many demand. 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Where's that picture you did, The9? C'mon, where is it...

It was drawn on a Facebook drawing app in around 2007, and as well as deleting the app (though it retains your old stuff) I haven't logged onto it for about 5 years, and I don't even know if those apps still exist, so it's probably lost to mankind.

There was a series of them with Bennett and Makin getting ever more distant from each other. :)

Having been released by West Ham in 2010 (he was on loan at Sunderland when the incident occurred), he's actually playing as a striker for Wootton Blue Cross in the United Counties Division One. I sh!t you not.

To give you an idea :

United Counties Div 1
