New Official Sites (now including Saints)

Saint Charlie

Not sure if anyone has been onto any other teams sites recently but a lot of them have changed to a new supplier and are almost unusable, absolutely awful.

Pages don't load or take ages, articles are chopped about, things appear on top of each other - the Pboro Chairman on Twitter just said he is mad about it.

Anyone know what the situation with ours is? I like the current layout and it would be annoying if we move over.

If anyone wants to see what I mean check these (it might be on certain browsers):

I've got no issue with them redesigning the sites but the golden rule is it needs to be usable. Clearly these aren't great. The current one isn't the quickest or most user friendly either... the organisation and sheer number of pages itself can be confusing, but we've got used to it.

I'd rather they scrapped it completely and went with a local independent web design company but I don't think that can happen.

Yeah im not sure how the deal works but think the sites are pretty standard across the country apart from a few. Maybe we won't get one like those links as we havent as yet and as you said first rule is that it needs to be usable. Once ours does load it is quite clear and as someone said above, its just a place to read official news, but the linked sites you can barely read.

Having built two sites for Premier League teams, I can tell you, they are nothing more than advertising platforms. Usability comes last. It makes me sad inside.

The Coventry (Man) City template isn't too bad... http://www.ccfc.co.uk/page/Home

You work for VML?

To be fair there aren't that many local digital agencies that could do a good job on such a large project, also i'd imagine it's the usual problems of budget, stakeholders and timelines that dictate the quality of the project.

Ah misread it, i thought you said you did the Premier League site, since i know VML did the last build of the Premier League site as i know someone that worked there, besides mate you know where i work anyway since you can just ask yaxley ;)

I've seen worse, to be fair. No major rendering issues on my screen (viewed in Chrome). Usability's not great but then most websites fall at this hurdle. The biggest crime is the splash page on initial load - the call to action to enter the flipping site is near-invisible.

Fair play to those clubs who are opted away from the normal web design. Im sick of our site being the same as most other teams in the FL and Prem. We should try something different.

It's not so much a matter of opting away from the normal design, most clubs had their own websites before the "template" option came along about 10 years ago. We were quite late defaulting over to it.

one for ericb really as he works for the competition:

what a stinking press release.

This part cant be true then?

All Football League club websites are currently in the process of re-launching and as a result the system is not as quick as it should be. The deadline for all site launches is 31 July, at which point the speed of service is expected to improve.

As we haven't launched yet, Burnley haven't, Bristol City haven't, Coventry haven't etc what happens? I know that Cortese has previously said that as soon as we can get out of the contract then we will but what about the other clubs now that we're past the supposed 'launch deadline'?

I was on Man City's the other day and remember thinking how good and user friendly it was or whatever. We should get one like theirs!

http://www.mcfc.co.uk/

It was reported to have cost them around £2m in total. It was also massively late in delivery. It's rather special though and has certainly set a precedence in to what a sports site could be like.

Oh good, that means the new design focuses on being really slow to load, especially on mobile devices...

There will eventually be a mobile site (out in September) but they're holding them back for the time being until all of the main websites are rolled out.

Thats a bit weird.

Are all the sites that used the same design as our current one getting theirs upgraded too? Basicially will I be able to use my Player login on loads of other club sites?

Every club who is part of FLi (Football League Interactive) and currently have the standard / common design site, are in the process of redesigning using the new templates and moving to the new provider - SapientNitro. I know that Burnley and Bristol City are still sorting out the links, redesigning and figuring out how it works.

This therefore means that we should still, in theory, be able to use our Saints Player logins on other clubs sites.

EDIT: Just checked and I can still login to the other clubs updated sites with my Saints Player login. All good!

Was kind of hoping that we'd have our own style website and not the bog standard one which many teams have.

The problem with this is the contract that all of the clubs are in. We all know that Cortese has said that as soon as we can get out of it then we will but until that point, we're stuck with the same as everyone else.

It's exactly the same as the Peterborough chairman said on Twitter yesterday.

DMAC102: Btw those fans who are driven mad by new look website & way its operating,I apologise & am just as irritated/frustrated & pushing for -

DMAC102: A solution of some sorts but as ya know we are tied into a contract which doesnt help the cause..but I am on it big time!

"HOME PAGE"

I see they are employing people fresh out of "how to build your own webpage" school!

I don't know if they have improved since being launched but I am having NO difficulty in viewing those pages and they look quite good! The Posh one has the boring outdated 'Home Page' on the page tab, but the Stoke City one says 'Stoke City FC Official Website'.

As to the suggestion that the Coventry City one looks good, I personally think it has too much content on the one page and I prefer the other ones!

Looking at the Man City website it doesn't look all that different to the other ones except that it doesn't have the annoying 'Enable cookies' page at launch and has a video instead. I would go as far as to suggest that it looks as though it has been created by the same company!

I am looking forward to seeing what the new Saints website will look like. I'm not sure about black as the background colour, but at least it's not blue!!
