Andy Carroll on loan to WHU for a £2m loan fee. The report says that Carroll's long term ambition remains at Anfield but that if WHU stay in the Prem the move may become permanent for £17m.

I wouldn’t swap any of our 4 main strikers for Carroll, but that is not to denigrate him and in signing a current England international, West Ham have shown their intention to consolidate in the Prem. Our signing of Steven Davis is a similar statement of intent. It does take the signing of one or two established star players to show the football world that a club means business, so however well our excellent prospects may do, at least one more established player at international level would be very encouraging. We have been linked with one or two, so will this week see SFC in a headline move?

How do loan moves work with regards to salary?

Do Liverpool continue to pay or will WHU have to assume responsibility, or is there no hard and fast rule and each deal is negotiate to suit both parties?

I believe it is negotiated. For example when Man City loan someone it will often be heavily subsidised by them due to their massive wages, but if we loaned out Puncheon we'd probably expect the receiving team to pay most if not all of his wages.

Bit of a weird one. If they can convince Carroll to go - and by the sound of it he doesn't want to - then they can get him for £2m for this season, which would seem a great bit of business.

But, if they stay up, they are then legally bound by the terms of the contract to buy him outright for a further £17m. Which could lead to an interesting situation if, for example, he did a cruciate at the end of the season but they still stayed up. They'd still have to pay a huge fee to take a player who could be injured indefinitely.

Of course Viet Nam have EVERY intention of completing the "Sale" for £17M at the end of the season

WHY do the FL allow such "hollow" transfers ???

As I understood it, I thought it was a "with an OPTION to buy " clause ??? Nothing binding

Guardian reckons it will be contracted that they have to pay it if they stay up:

"Liverpool have told West Ham that they can have Carroll on loan for the season in exchange for £2m, but that West Ham must then pay a further £17m to make the deal permanent if they retain their Premier League status... there would be no mere option for West Ham to buy Carroll next summer; if they remained a Premier League club, they would be legally bound to sign him."

A bit damn risky if you ask me.

Would be a decent signing for them and would fit in to how they play. I read they'll be paying 2m + 100% of his wages, then have the option to buy for 17m at the end of the season. Not sure it will happen though, and wouldnt be too happy if I was a WHU fan. Definitely know how they're going to be setting out this season. "You used to play football..."

Are you nuts? I would.

Apparently (hear me out) the Carroll loan move and the Aquilani stories have been made up by Liverpool to find the mole in the club that has been leaking all the transfer stories early...

Makes Liverpool look rather stupid either way. Waste over £100m in the last 2 seasons to discover that you have to off load all the rubbish in this manor at a tenth of what you paid to build a squad that's just good enough for 8th, only team in a stupider position is West Ham (willing to buy some of the dross).

To make it Saints related, I'm so glad we don't have to put up with a mess like this from the club.

Where did you get that from? 'Apparently' according to who?

It's a potential transfer between two Premier League clubs who are affiliated to the FA; what's it got to do with the Football League ?

Besides, what's your basis for advocating third party involvement, and making a moral judgement on this particular transfer and not others ?

Ian 'Moose' Abrahams "knew" about the 'Caroll to West Ham' story long before any other journos as far as I can make out do working backwards from there would be a good start for Liverpool I'd imagine

Apart from being an incompetent pr*ck, he's also a big West Ham fan, so its likely his version of the story came from them rather than from Liverpool.

So ( with an attempt to be slightly un-bias) who's going to score more goals... Carroll or Lambert ?

Really looking forward to seeing how well a few of our players step up.

Depends where Carroll ends up, and if he plays. As poor as he was for most of the season, by February or March he had settled down a bit and in a few games at the end of the season he was on fire, almost unplayable. he's a huge lump who is nowhere near being worth £35M but he'll still cause a lot of defences trouble this year, especially if he's in a team that plays to his strengths. Sadly for him, neither Liverpool or Newcastle are set up to do that. West Ham are ideal for him but it would be the worst thing in terms of development for him to move to London.

You have to take your hat off to Professor for the sheer amount of fail in one post. Not Saints related, not true (rebuffed by Liverpool), plus those two statements of idiocy.

Keep it coming Prof; never has there been a less apt username.

Dear Mr Kraken, allow me to help you.

1. Current and former international players are generally thought to be of higher quality than those not to have achieved international honours;

2. Most Premier League teams have a number of such players.

3. SFC has one (Tadanari Lee) and have signed a second (Steven Davis) which still leaves Saints short of internationals compared to other Premier teams; It is, of course, a matter of opinion as to whether that matters.

5. A club with recognised international names tends to be more attractive to other similar players, other things such as pay, being equal;

6. WHU, having been promoted below SFC, are a benchmark against which comparasons can be drawn.

7. WHU are actively seeking players of international class, having signed ex-Finnish GK Jaaskelainen, Wales defender James Collins and Mali international Modibo Maiga. WHU are also linked with several other players at that level, the latest being the on/off potential loan/transfer of Andy Carroll.

8. Apart from Davis, Saints have signed 2 quality players with great potential and a reserve GK. By comparison with WHU this does not yet advertise the same level of ambition, although as fans we believe that ambition exists. We also believe further signings are to be made. Will those signings be established stars or will they be 'prospects'?

9. WHU were our promotion rivals of last season, therefore comparison with their Premier League preparations against our own, is 'saints-related'.

Idiocy is not a word I would use towards Mr K, who is deserving of much greater respect, but I hope the explanation has helped.
