SuperMikey Posted 30 July, 2012 Share Posted 30 July, 2012 I'm thinking of spending a few months living abroad next summer given the current sh!te financial climate here and the fact that I didn't go travelling like a lot of my mates did before they went to Uni. I'd probably look to spend 6-8 months living and working in a few different countries (was thinking Canada and France). Has anybody done something similar? I know working visas are hard to come by, but as it would only be for a few months in each place would this be too much of a problem?
This Charming Man Posted 30 July, 2012 Share Posted 30 July, 2012 I have a few mates who have applied for working visas for Canada over the last couple of years and they all said it was a nightmare. Loads of hassle and they had to constantly chase the Canadian Embassy. I've only applied for a working visa once before and that was for Australia. Was all rather straight forward despite the fact I had to provide x-rays and medical records because I'd spent so long in Asia, apparently I was a disease risk. buctootim Posted 30 July, 2012 Share Posted 30 July, 2012 (edited) Its easier in the EU for obvious reasons and teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) jobs are usually plentiful. Its a good way to get to know people and reasonably paid but woll need a basic EFL qualification. Some of the eastern European countries like Romania or Czech Republic should be fun. SuperMikey Posted 30 July, 2012 Author Share Posted 30 July, 2012 How long did it take them to hear back about their applications etc? Did any of them get Visas? I would quite like to do Australia as well (I have family near Melbourne and friends in Brisbane) but the living costs are absolutely ridiculous. I don't think it would be financially viable, especially given the number of people that are going there to work now.

You can get a basic EFL qualification relatively easily and quickly. I have a few friends who will spend the next year in France doing EFL, so I think that's probably what I would most likely do if I was to go there for a bit. EU is definitely a more viable option but I have wanted to live in Canada for so long now that I think I should just go there for a while and do it! He did eventually get it after his initial application got rejected for no reason at all. Did take a few months though and plenty of hassle.
