SuperMikey Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 http://m.mirror.co.uk/article?id=1180296/ However unlikely this may be, what a statement of intent!
saint lard Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 He would flourish at Saints, stifled at Arsenal, such a shame.
Turkish Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 * sticks this one in the "they said man would never walk on the moon" file*
MOSaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Silly season is in full swing now... Would be amazing, but no chance.
CanadaSaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 http://m.mirror.co.uk/article?id=1180296/ However unlikely this may be, what a statement of intent! I'd be surprised if there wasn't a very quick and very clear denial from the club, based on two things: a) We have very little chance of getting him, even if we really are interested b) Being willing to pay transfer fees and wages like that would make every player target from here on extremely difficult to sign.
supersonic Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 the rumour was going round on twitter a few months back, would love to see him back, just can't see it happening myself
Delboy Dave Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 100k a week - Would upset the current squad, surely?
Lighthouse Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Wow, that journalist is selling off his credibility pretty cheap for a bit of attention. There are just so many reasons this will never happen that I can't be bothered to list them all. Over to you MLG.
Saint_lambden Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Probably worth an audacious loan move. But surely they wouldn't ask for £15m on a player with only 1 year left on his contract....
Appy Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Would be the biggest signing of the window so far. Can't see it though.
SuperSAINT Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Probably worth an audacious loan move. But surely they wouldn't ask for £15m on a player with only 1 year left on his contract.... They want 20m for RVP!
buctootim Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I'd be surprised if there wasn't a very quick and very clear denial from the club, based on two things: a) We have very little chance of getting him, even if we really are interested b) Being willing to pay transfer fees and wages like that would make every player target from here on extremely difficult to sign. c) Walcott wants to play central striker, not on the right wing. The exact opposite of what we need.
CanadaSaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Greatest transfer story ever? Not if you were around when Keegan signed. Not even close.
SuperSAINT Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Not if you were around when Keegan signed. Not even close. I know, but can you imagine how Arsenal fans would feel if it happened?
sfc1971 Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 No thanks, As I have said from day dot Theo is a Speed Boat with no driver and we done well getting ?? Millions from the Arse in the 1st place. Would come here be Hero worshipped by the Mongs on massive wages and achieve the square root of F All.
ART Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I think that Bale would be a better acquisition for the team. If only we'd held on to Oxo an additional year. There it shows that few at the club could have thought 15 months ago we'd get a second promotion and be in the Premier League so soon.
CanadaSaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I know, but can you imagine how Arsenal fans would feel if it happened? Well, although most of them didn't want him in the first place, and then didn't want AOC, they'll probably go completely nuts at the thought of him going anywhere. If it's Spurs there will be contracts out on Wenger.

paris Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Might not need to convince him though ,could be a relief for him to come back ......
Turkish Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Everyone is assuming that we can't afford his wages as well. Players dont just move for money. His girlfriend is from here, he was happy here. Maybe they want to be close to their parents and are thinking of starting a family? What better place than to live in Midanbury near her parents and be in the Glenfield infants school catchment area. Who wouldnt want to take a stroll down riverside park with the family to relax on a Sunday? It isn't all about money you know.

saintsmike25 Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Would be an amazing signing but it will never happen. Maybe we did inquire, although Southampton will never pay over £40,000 a week towards any player with our current wage structure. This is what is pricing us out of getting many good players. It's a wise move though, we shouldn't pay beyond our means, and we should focus on developing our youngsters and keep with the mentality that we're building here. I'm hoping we don't get Scott Dann and focus on using our scouting network to get a strong centre back from Europe. Much like Fonte and Jos who were bargains.(Although Fonte & Jos weren't bought from European clubs)
doubleonothing Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Can't see it happening but would be great if it did. Now to go after Bale.....

Tokyo-Saint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 "Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has made a claim to new and *prospective signings that the club can challenge for a Champions League place in the next three years."
wireframebox Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 What about on loan? His £100k/week wages work out about the same as the money we were reported to have offered for Lens?
Saint Billy Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Too much for someone who spends half the season injured
Lighthouse Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 What about on loan? His £100k/week wages work out about the same as the money we were reported to have offered for Lens? No, just... no. Why would anyone loan out a player in the last year of his contract, they would lose his services for a year and he'd leave on a free next summer. The only reason Arsenal would sell now is to stop Theo leaving for free next year. We cannot out-bid Champions League teams on the wages of their best players. Christ this thread/journalist is stupid.

Christ this thread/journalist is stupid. On the flip side, why would someone spend £15m on someone with a year left on their contract? Arsenal clearly want to ship him, loaning him out will save them £5-6m in wages and a small upfront fee? I don't think it's unfeasible as you make out? You sir have clearly never played Football Manager!?
sfc1971 Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 It makes me have a little chuckle to myself as to how many of our lot seems to think a Person who can run fast is a faaannntastic player. And that is about all Theo does, put him in a average Prem team and he will go missing !

You sir have clearly never played Football Manager!? They wont, that's just what Arsenal are asking for, they will probably end up with around £10m. Someone will pay it to secure Walcott's services now, rather than wait a year for his contract to expire and potential have Theo lose interest. Arsenal wont save any money by loaning him out because they will have to find a suitable replacement who will want similar wages. I have played football manager but I don't remember ever getting promoted from the Championship and buying the best players from Champions League teams. Walcott will go to a Champions League team who can offer him more money than Arsenal. Saints wont get a look in and to suggest we will is ludicrous.
sandwichsaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 That's new CB sorted then, just need some pace up front now.

When I took Burley up we finished 13th first season and I signed a lot of good young players together with Michael Carrick who was available on a free and David Rodriguez from Valencia for £3m. The following season I was able to add some real quality and finished 3rd two seasons in a row winning the leagur cup the first season and the champions league and retaining the league cup the 2nd followed by the League, FA cup and champions league in my third season in top flight. In my fourth season up I won the super cup, world club cup, FA cup and retained the champions league and premier league which I won by 11 points. Clear evidence if a club like Burnley can do it with a 22,000 stadium and zero investment then Saints can easily.
Matthew Le God Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 (edited) Too much for someone who spends half the season injured hmm... 2011/12 57 games 2010/11 44 games 2009/10 33 games 2008/09 41 games 2007/08 40 games 2006/07 32 games 2005/06 25 games That is a huge amount of first team games for someone that was 16 years old in 2005/06. Most of those games were for a top Premier League side in the league and Cups, in the Champions League and representing the senior England side. Edited 28 July, 2012 by Matthew Le God
Matthew Le God Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Normally journalists don't put their names to such seemingly outrageous stories and it is labelled "sportswriter" or something similar. This one was written by Matt Law the Chief football writer for the Sunday Mirror. Odd for a senior journalist to just make up and potentially look stupid for believing there was even an outside chance of it being true.
Appy Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 Anyone that says that they don't want him here is brainless.

He's got a year on his contract and his agent is putting pressure on Arsenal. Do you really think he would sign for Southampton on a smaller wage?
Bearsy Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 Makes the old Adam Johnson rumour seem suddenly a lot more plausible! I wonder if that's the plan, like when I'm at Hollywood parties and I hit on Jessica Alba so that my real target, Miley Cyrus or whoever thinks we're in the same leagues!
david in sweden Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 Theo?...AGAIN ! ..is now the 53rd..or is it the 54th player " linked " with Saints ** since the end of last season. Sounds interesting to some I'm sure....but he's not the same Theo as he was at 16..and I do feel the " never go back " epithet applies here more than ever. Good Luck Theo........ .but most likely... somewhere else. ** The Echo's ongoing table of "rumours about players" passed the 50 mark a week or two ago.
