But if WE invent a new piece of technology why should we have to share it with everyone else? If we are innovative enough then why should everyone else benefit?

...we dont need to if we dont use it - surely you see that the principle is that of the BEST athelete winning, not the best BIKE? The best anology could be, I could beat Chris Hoy If I got to use his current bike, but he was restricted to an old bone shaker weighing 50lbs... OK a little extreme, but the issue is, even though I beat him, it would not make me the better cyclist, and I want to see medals go to the best riders, not the best aeronautical engineers, materials scientists and mechanical engineers.

Then why not just give them all the same bikes, helmets etc?

you don't get the concept to track racing then.....bike technology has always been a part of it..

the differences are minuscule and are are blowing everyone away anyway

er.. I do get that, but the UCI have been trying to get away from that for some time, going back to banning the lotus bike, or Obree's low bar and riding position... yes technology has always played a part, but the UCI wanting to eliminate the difference it makes is nothing new and I can understand the principle of what they are trying to do.

Rather like the horses, maybe they should get a load of bikes and you get given a random one. Would certainly eliminate the technology side of it.

...or even simpler - you just have a standard one which everyone uses.

Dont get me wrong, I love seeing technological development and these bikes are pretty cool, but ultimately it should be about who is teh best physical athlete, and I would hate it if we were suddenly beaten in all categories because the French or the Germans had some new super bike - could imagine we might get a bit of uproar on here!

The rules are now that anything used in the velodrome must be commercially available to anybody who wants to buy it - they said on telly yesterday that you can have a Team GB track bike for about £20K.

Just caught up on the cycling. Immense from Kenny and Trott.

If anyone fancies some late night entertainment then Anthony Joshua is fighting the huge Chinese boxer Zhang in a minute. Anthony Ogogo earlier won through to the semis, so at least a bronze for him.

Went today. Assuming you are going via Waterloo, ignore the advice to get off the tube at west ham ...go on to Stratford on jubilee line.. It's not too congested . Take food with you if you want it ...queues are long in the Park.

Almost went tonight. Saw £50 athletics tix last night for the evening slot but also that it was forecast to rain all evening. Don't think it rained at all did it? Hope I get another shot before it ends...

Do you know what the situation is for stand alone park pass? Prob massive queues?

None on sale due to the transition of over 200,000 folks in the park with tickets 80,000 of which are for each session in the Main Arena.

Team GB Cycling is a complex set up that optimises the power plants probably more than the Bikes. Apparently Vicky Pendleton is quite fragile in a sensitive way, put her out on the track and she has the kille instinct of a shark. At the other end of the scale Laura Trott, if you met her out in town on a Saturday night would come across as a ditsy giggly blonde and says herself that she is not the smartest cyclist on the track, again on a bike on the track she is lethal:her performance in the elimination race was the product of a highly tuned human being.

All of this is what Clive Woodward did to the England Rugby team, filled the support roles with Human technicians who's role at every training session was to ensure that each player improved by 1% his performance. That's what he wanted to do with Southampton but unfortunately with Rupert the Hockey player and Sir Clive the egg chaser and Football being a bit set in its ways all of it was seen as witchcraft. Funnily enough we now have a manager in Nigel who is doing exactly what Sir Clive wanted to achieve, and applying vast amounts of the back up science that exists in the Team GB Cycling squad to the players at our club. Tadanari Lee stayed here over the summer rather than returning to Japan to kick back, as he said his best chances of a quick return was putting his injured foot into the hands of the Medical staff, Rickie said last year that he had never been so fit.

Optimising the abilities of the Human body is the Technical advantage the Cyclists have.

I take it you despise the yearly circus that is Formula 1, like I do ?

Is that 3 or 4 athletes who have failed in qualifying this morning due to not being fit ?

Doesn't seem to happen with the swimmers, sailors, or cyclists.

Just a thought, and in no way minimising the astounding athleticism of any of our competitors, but maybe those three disciplines put less strain on the body?

But they were injured before the Games started - why are they competing ? The men's hurdler got over 1 hurdle as he's got a damaged ligament, the female javelin thrower effectively made 3 no-throws as she has an elbow injury, and Idowu is hampered by his ego and attitude.

( And I don't accept for a second that swimmers and cyclists put any less strain on their bodies ).

No more do I, and I hope that came across in what I said earlier. However, and I think this might be of some significance, athletic events are more weight-bearing. It's common knowledge that swimming is one of the best forms of exercise because it's NOT weight-bearing.

I think all athletes will compete if they can because of the sheer joy and experience of taking part in an Olympics. If you managed to hear Oduwo just now, you'll know that he's not up himself at all - far from it.

Suprised by Houvenahgel and her attitude. How she can say that it was unjust to leave her out when the 3 selected broke the WR 3 times during the Games and won a Gold by a country mile is beyond me.

It seems sour grapes. I bet she is utterly gutted of course, but when the girls were riding world record times every race, it is hard to say you should have been picked

Who is to say they wouldnt have got at least one of the WRs with her riding instead ?

One of the 3 girls was SICK for the semi-final. Why couldnt she have ridden and ensured her medal as part of the team ?

She also trained over 4 years for this event, and doesnt even go away with a medal that all the girls she trained with have.

Sorry, I am with her on this. Though I wouldnt have gone public.

Seems to me there IS a personal issue going on in that group.

On the money imo.

I think you'd find it very har5d to argue with decsions made by the management of British cycling over the past few years. They have been supremely successful. The woman who didnt ride has been used as back up and at 37 she is no longer in her prime.

Still doesnt mean she would have let the team down. How were they to know how the sick girl was going to ride ?

The brownlee brothers are incredible.

Sadly, one has to serve a 15 second penalty... So he is running out a huge lead in order to save his medal chances

I reckon gold and bronze, but you never know he could catch the spaniard

However they knew is moot, they made an informed decision based on information we are not party to - and the team they selected set yet another world record, so they are vindicated.

How does Olympic triatholon rate in comparison to Iron Man events. In Oz, we get Iron Man all the time and I haven't heard of these Yorkie Brownlees.

Triathlon is harder to win with tougher competitors it is the professional event. Hence why we won it and the Aussies were nowhere to be seen.
