Turkish Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 The first time I've seen him play today and what a cracking young player he is. Seems to have it all. Athletic, good on the ball, intelligent and full of energy. Alongside Lallana probably Saints best player and didn't look at all out of place. Got the feeling today I was watching a real star in the making.
S-Clarke Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I've said it for years, a star in the making. Love him, so technical, so agile yet so confident and plays beyond his age. His got the football brain and the ability to find space, which is a telling sign of a class player. He will be an England international, I'll stand by that. Totally in the Jack Wiltshire mold, class class act.

Psycrow Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 liked two things very much involving him today. When NA was giving him instructions after 20 minutes, he wasn't just saying yes yes, he seemed to ask questions to ensure he understood everything. Also very much liked the Guly arm around the shoulder at half time giving him advice.
S-Clarke Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 All this and a big tank, he was in amongst it all the time he was on the pitch today. Absolutely, full of energy - but not one of these players who runs around a lot with little ability, he's full of ability. He's got it all for sure. I think his head is screwed on too so he'll make it big. I was lucky enough to watch him when he was 14/15 play for a youth side, you could tell then that he had something, he just stood out with his touch and movement off the ball. I've championed him ever since and it looks like we've managed him very well, but I know the club have been very, very excited about him for years. In some quarters they believe he can make the biggest impact of any young player to come out of our academy, that's how highly he's thought of.
beatlesaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I have seen him 3 or 4 times now and have been more impressed with him each time. He will be one of the first names on the team sheet in the not too distant future.

Without try to get too excited about seeing him play well in a friendly he seems to be the sort of player we were all claiming England never have this time last month.
latter day saint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 was very impressed by his performance today, so assured for a 17 year old. think he will be pushing very hard for a starting place this season if he carries on like that. to top it all he's a Skate !
trousers Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I've said it for years, a star in the making. That makes two of us :-)
Turkish Posted 28 July, 2012 Author Posted 28 July, 2012 A starter for city imo How much have they offered for him?
Mouldy Coat Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I really like Lallana with the freedom in a 5 man midfield. Jwp was simply outstanding. IMO ahead of jack cork on that performance, full of energy and more offensive thinking also. He will play a big part this year. Future star no doubt
Thedelldays Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 He was class. FFS Thought Lallana was like a younger joe cole in that role

Lighthouse Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I'd like to book my seat on the "JWP will play for England" band wagon nice and early. Looked an excellent prospect out there today.
sammysaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Really hope he gets some starts in league cup/fa cup games and to be honest i would give him some playing time vs city and other decent teams, were not likely to get result there so why not let them play 20 mins of a game where they need to learn how to be patient with tackles and close down class players. To develop him fully this season and turn him into a back up prem player we may need to offload hammond, or loan him to a championship team for 5/6 months.
CanadaSaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I'm not sure what the rules are, but I suspect that if we had given him an extended run in the Championship he might not be here now.
Griffo Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I know his family are Skates, but was/is he actually a Pompey fan? If I know the answer to this I can then make my decision if I can give him my full support or not.

Griffo Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Yes, season ticket holder & was at Wembley when they cheated their way to a win. He is now my least favourite Saints player. I know that's there already, but it doesn't mean he's a Saints fan does it?
supersonic Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 He is a saints fan, he's openly admitted it on his social networking sites. I know his family are skates and he was a season ticket holder, but he tweeted something like "come on you reds" on derby day..
Scudamore Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 I was aware of his talents at the point of fertilisation. His development has even surprised me though. I felt at the time that he was destined to be the new Gazza. But now it's plain that he's going to be the best player to ever grace the field of football.

Aardvark Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 He is now my least favourite Saints player. I know that's there already, but it doesn't mean he's a Saints fan does it? Grow up FFS. Even if true, he was 13 at the time and presumably born into a blue family? You'd hold that against him for life?
CanadaSaint Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 Sorry, Griffo, but in the absence of a winky-person I think you're taking this anti-Pompey thing too far. The kid is seventeen and looks like being a hell of a talent. If you want to take the edge off your enjoyment of watching him develop with and play for us, just because you think he might be a Pompey fan, you're going to miss out on a lot of satisfaction.
Griffo Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 It's even worse if he's now a Saints fan because he's clearly got no backbone. Who would change from supporting your home town club to their biggest rivals? This is not the type of personality we want at our club.

CWD Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 My Dad and JWP's Dad know each other through work. John is still a Pompey fan but understood from the word go that we were the better choice. Clever bloke
pingwing Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 He looked something really really special. I imagined the original plan was this season would be another champ year, offload a midfielder that wasn't 100% prem material (looking at Hammond vs Chaplow for this spot, Chaplow being more likely given Hammond's captaincy) and make JWP some space to shine. Instead he's going to have a good set of cup runs and the odd prem game when we are safe... Truth be told I am very excited for him as he looks like he can only get better from a really top starting position considering his age. Finally seeing the academy turning out players who not only will break into the first team, but will stay there for many season to come.

doughnutman Posted 28 July, 2012 Posted 28 July, 2012 My Dad and JWP's Dad know each other through work. John is still a Pompey fan but understood from the word go that we were the better choice. Clever bloke Brilliant. But what about James
CanadaSaint Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 Brilliant. But what about James I think CWD was talking about James's dad - John, who's a lawyer (so not your everyday Pompey fan.) In fact, with smarts like that it's surprising he's a Pompey fan at all.

shurlock Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 Tidy performance but nothing more. Considering he's 17, that's encouraging but some of the gushing praise is just *****. Well behind Cork and Davis but hopefully he gets a run out or two in the cup and the more generous sub rules give him a few cameo appearances.

Well behind Cork and Davis but hopefully he gets a run out or two in the cup and the more generous sub rules give him a few cameo appearances. He was a hell of a lot more than "tidy" IMO. He showed up very well in a midfield packed with skill on both sides of the ball, and played with a composure beyond his years. There's a sophistication to his game that I don't think Cork will ever approach, but they're different kinds of player. I suspect he'll play a more prominent role than you're suggesting but they can't over-expose him either.

rooney Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 My goodness, what an excllent performance from this young man at SMS yesterday. This was on top of a lot of praise from NA after the Evian game too. Look forward to seeing a lot more of him if he keeps this up.
ericofarabia Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 I have seen him 3 or 4 times now and have been more impressed with him each time. He will be one of the first names on the team sheet in the not too distant future. 1st 3 names on the team sheet even
Faz Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 What impressed me was the way he showed for, and then demanded the ball. At 17.

Also very much liked the Guly arm around the shoulder at half time giving him advice. ...Yes I thought JWP did very well, too). Occasionally...he reminded me of another young lad who started his Saints career... more than 30 years ago ...Steve Williams Not to get sidetracked on what is a JWP thread) I thought Guly looked good also. He's (Guly) never got home to some of the people on this site, but I noted last season that he plays very well on fine, sunny days and looked as though he had lots of time whenever he was involved He knows his own " shelf life" ... but it doesn't stop him encouraging new, young talent. Edited 29 July, 2012 by david in sweden
Mouldy Coat Posted 29 July, 2012 Posted 29 July, 2012 (edited) JWP covered more ground than anyone else on that football pitch. It wasn't headless chicken running, it was intelligent movement but with an extra gear of energy. At such a young age he is by no means the finished article. Don't get me wrong, i like Jack Cork and his composure, but i think JWP will have more to offer as he develops this year. From what I saw yesterday, more performances like that will earn him at least 10-15 appearances this year IN THE LEAGUE Edited 29 July, 2012 by Mouldy Coat
