Viking Warrior Posted 25 July, 2012 Share Posted 25 July, 2012 I don't know how this survey was done or what criteria they used in their survey but it's bollixs . It can be a miserable place . If it was so happy why are so many folk off sick and constantly moaning . Anybody else at the top or bottom of this survey
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 The Western Isles must be a terrible place to live. Mother nature putting on a sublime display of natural beauty all around you. The kind of tranquility, space and population density that gives a man a fighting chance of holding on to his sanity ... oh and a almost total absence of anything that even resembles the 'Rat Race' as we overcrowded mainlanders know it. Who could possibly want any of that ? Heaven on Earth if you ask me - as long you can find a way of earning a honest living and you don't mind some real weather every now and again that is. dune Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 All of Scotland north of the central belt is picturesque to drive through, but I wouldn't want to live there. You'd soon get bored of the barren nothingness.

TopGun Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 I think the hours of winter darkness could be a bit depressing.
CB Saint Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 It's because the locals are stranded and never get to find out what they are missing on the mainland therefore they think that ****e weather, sickness and moaning is the very best that life can be. dune Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 I think the fact that remote communities have less access to large chain stores is conducive with a happier existence. Everyone is far too materialistic nowadays and that often leads to debt and debt leads to misery. Life is certainly more about life in rural areas. trousers Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 They don't even know what the North Korea flag looks like. That's how remote and out of touch they are FFS! :-)

ZebadeeRust Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 I lived in the Hebrides for a couple of years and can understand these results. There is a great demographic hole in these outlying places. Anyone with any intellect leaves at age 18 to go to Uni or off to the mainland to find work. You end up with the young, the retired, the rich and the happily ignorant as your general populace. As we all know, on the whole, going to work makes people bloody miserable. Take out the working population and the stats get all skewed. Voila a happy population. buctootim Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 I think the hours of winter darkness could be a bit depressing. Got a friend who lives on the west coast near Mull. They made their holiday home their into their main home. Even after five years he still really struggles with the light - can be endless grey, rainy days even during the summer.
