Beram Kayal - £5m - from Celtic (linked in Telegraph)

Surely this is unlikely what with us already having Cork, Morgan, Chaplow and Hammond and perhaps Lallana capable of doing a job alongside Davis. Not to mention the emergence of JWP over pre-season. Central midfield is an area I cannot see us strengthening any further.

Wiki says....

Style of play

Kayal is a central midfielder but he is capable of performing various different roles within the position. He can play as a defensive midfielder, sitting in front of the back four and stifling the opposition or as a box-to-box midfielder, protecting the defenders as well as supporting the forwards. Although he is more renowned for his defensive capabilities than attacking, he is still able to contribute well to going forward.[34]

Kayal is a tenacious, hard working midfielder, known for high stamina level, aggressive tackling and combatative edge, he also has great passing ability and quick feet.[34][35] Ex-Celtic and Israel midfielder Eyal Berkovic, described him as being: "Perfect for British football. He is strong technically, very aware but really competitive...He will have no problem adapting to the style in Scotland - he will love the speed and aggression.[36]

Cork Morgan and Davis our the only central midfilders good enough for 90 minutes in the premiership, in my opinion. If say Morgan got a 3 game ban for losing his French coolness and Cork was out injured for a month, we'd be ****ed!

So a similar role to Schneiderlin? Don't think we need him really then.

I initially thought the same but I guess we'd ideally have a like for like cover for each position / style. But that said, isn't Davis similar too? Hmmm...dunno

More to the question, it infers we still want Hooper.

Don't think so, I think they're just rehashing old stories to add a bit more beef to the article. That interest finished when we bought Jay Rodriguez, It was always a case of 1 or the other.

I read that as lazy journalism. As in " Saints in for a Celtic player = journo remembers we were in for Hooper last season so trots it out again to fill a few lines". Call me an old cynic...

It implies, you have inferred from it.

I don't see why we wouldn't want to sign another central midfielder, they're very prone to getting suspended and we don't exactly have a wealth of proven Premier League talent in there. Then again, not sure how much stock I put in any of these media reports.

I disagree, apart from Davis there is precious little experience at a high level there. There is a fair chance Chaplow and Hammond might struggle in the Prem and Schneiderlin is still developing.

Great idea these signings. Important to control midfield and be able to score goals. Team against Man City:

Davis

Cork Schneiderlin Kayal Davis Lallana

Rodriguez Lee Hooper Sharp Lambert

Ah, Sh*t. No space for defenders. Too complicated this football management stuff.....

May well find that several Celtic players become available when they crash out of the Champions League qualifiers against Helsinki. The prospect of a season with no European football and no Old Firm derbies will tempt many to push for a move south

Depends how big their league title bonus is, as that's the easiest money they'll ever earn.

You're right! People forget that the PL is all about squads in-depth; whist on paper we may have a reasonably capable "first pick" midfield, they are all injury and emotion prone. At best you need two "first pick" sets of players in each position and W-P whilst being a really exciting prospect is not going to cope with Nasri, Tevez & Saurez just yet.

On the other hand we don't want to be bringing in a load of expensive misfits in here either - one or two obstinate personalities who think more of their salary packages than the team cause would cause mayhem; whatever the alleged diplomatic capabilities of Adkins he can't be expected to shape-up and bring into the fold too many "been-there done that" prima -donas (?) at one time and only a month ahead of the real ko.

Football players generally dont care about money - playing in the top league with some of the best training facilities in the UK is normally all they want/need.

It reminds me of the Maslow's hierarchy of Needs that we were taught at management school and the lack of greed of bankers who just love doing their jobs because the work in Canary Wharf, one of the best office facilities in the UK.

It is of course all absolute ******** and really sad that a well informed bloke like you can swallow this type of propaganda gobble-de-gook without question

What about a chairman with ambition?

FIFA player survey - why do you choose a club:

60% = Training ground and changing facilities

20% = Chairman's ambition

6% = Youth setup and potential

5% = Manager

2% = Home kit

1% = Away kit

1% = Money

1% = Positivity on fans forums

4% Other
