Carlos Fandango Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 Maybe the Palace Boss in question should look to his own management, he let a prized player's contract run out. There is also the possibility that it's him that's taking the mick asking for an unrealistic transfer fee for an out of contract playr, it's just not our chairman's style to run to the press grizzling about it though. Neil Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 Hopefully we can get Zaha on the cheap as well, that will really wind him up. No sentiment, and if Palace had just gone up and we'd stayed in the Championship they'd be trying to poach our young talent, but possibly with less success. I like the fact that Cortese continues to annoy other clubs, but doesn't speak to the press.

Carlos Fandango Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 A good chairman does what is best for his own club by bringing the best people he can into the club and then empowering them to do the best they can. So far two promotions would suggest that up until this point our chairman has got more right than wrong. This season will test him and everyone else as its a huge step up so we will see what he is made of. It is all well and good being the big fish in a small pond but from here on we are back to being small fry. Interesting times ahead for sure. Let's hope he continues to grow with us eh? CB Fry Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 Ooooh, yes, very hard hitting words those. Excuse me if I don't feel that the phrase "taking the mick" is exactly "hitting out". From a business leader in an industry in the public eye it is hitting out. Quite rare for any chief exec to use phrases like that on the record. You can play the mock offended card but you were the one whining about "sensationalist journalism" on the back of a fairly workaday article about a football exec getting the hump. Hardly the most sensational story the world has known is it?

Hardly the most sensational story the world has known is it? In the business world yes, but this sort of thing is common practise in football, there are countless examples of chairmen and managers "hitting out". Either way it's no big deal at all. Palace let the contract of their brightest academy player in years to run down and are unhappy that we didn't pay what they want immediately. Tokyo-Saint Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 Can someone make up an official what is hitting out scale with examples of both what is hitting out and what is not, so that this thread can get on with being a discussion over whether people like Cortese or not. This is a forum for discussing opinions, I gave a fairly innocuous opinion on what I feel is a bit of a over the top headline. No outrage, no whining, no offense. But of course, you are the great CBFry, you must take what I've written, exaggerate it in your own head, so that you have something to get all high and mighty about today. Viking Saint Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 “We think that we have developed one of Britain’s finest young defenders through our academy and then given him great experience playing first-team football. He’s certainly got the ability to be a very good Premier League player and we will not be accepting their offer but going to tribunal." and why, may we ask, would you go to the trouble of developing one of Britain's finest young defenders and then not make the effort to tie him in to a contract that reflects your investment????? if he opts not to stay with your club, then it is clear that he wishes to develop his game somewhere else and a fee is decided accordingly..... is this really newsworthy??? trousers Posted 26 July, 2012 Author Share Posted 26 July, 2012 Whatever. You said it was sensationalist journalism. It's not. Levels of sensationalism are determined by the beholder not the event itself. If Bill Oddie discovers a new breed of Great Tit he'll experience a higher level of sensation that you or I (unless, of course, you are also into birds in a big way) Ergo, no one is right or wrong if someone describes something as sensational and someone else doesn't. It's been my pleasure to help dissipate the angst on this thread. I'm here for the next 7 years at least.

I remember the Peterborough chairman saying they refused to listen to any offers we made for MacKail-Smith after our original offer was so derogatory they deemed it as wasting their time. up and away Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 A direct quote from senior Palace exec of "Southampton are taking the mick" I would say is hitting out. So not sensationalist journalism at all. Knee jerk press bashing from you, yes. Bearing in mind that over recent years Palace executives have described the tribunal process as a total joke. Southampton taking the mick looks about what you would expect as a competitive offer. Why even bother to comment further when it is now out of the two clubs hands? The answer lies in the fact these tribunals come up with a price far less than the selling club is happy with. So why do you feel that a club offering what could be around the expected rate not be sensationalist? You have no idea of the fee, just a comment from Palace that could have come from one of their previous tribunal rulings.

The Palace guy has had a little moan and the journo worked it into a fairly anodyne workaday article of him hitting out at SFC. Which is a perfectly accurate summation of what has happened. The end. david in sweden Posted 26 July, 2012 Share Posted 26 July, 2012 (edited) @dailyecho: [saints] Palace chief hits out at Saints http://t.co/CAqL3IKn (via @the_saints) I noted some days back that the Tribunal may not meet Palace's valuation of the player. I think they (Palace) had a good offer from Saints for a player who was OOC...........we'll see what the Tribunal comes up with, but I doubt that they will get anywhere near Palaces's demands. If they don't you just start dishing out drama queen sh ite like the above. Classic. So I give an opinion, you disagree, I defend my opinion, you refer to me as a "sensitive flower" and group me in with the "bed wetters", and yet apparently I'm the drama queen. Ok princess, whatever you say. The reason people feel the need to launch into this "oh the great CB Fry has spoken" stuff is because you come across as utterly arrogant. You take somebody's opinion, and lump them into whatever polarised group you have decided to attack on that particular day, and your style of discussion is aggressive and condescending. The thread on which you got all huffity and ended an amazing rant with "name them, name them, f*cking name them" was absolutely hilarious, but also typical. You lament the fact that people want everything to do with the club to be positive, defending your right to give a negative opinion when you see fit, and yet in the same breath you refer to somebody giving a very mild, negative opinion of a news story as "whining". So you carry on thinking you are gods gift to winning an argument, well done for having superior opinions to everybody else. If I had your address I would post you a nice shiny medal. We are told that the compensation is not a "transfer fee" but a reflection of how much CPFC have contributed to the player's development. If that is the case then the answer is "a great deal" because few players of Nathaniel's age have so much experience of first team football. Phil Alexander is talking with Les Read of Southampton and let's hope that they can reach an amicable solution this week rather than going to tribunal.
