dannysfc Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 I was in one of my local supermarkets today and I saw Lee Barnard getting something with his "Fit" Bird and that I am starting to wonder that for how long will Lee Barnard still be here at Saints and that whether Adkins still wants to have him at Saints or that whether he will move elsewhere...!!! Should he stay or Should he go? Thoughts? Thanks! COYR!!!

The9 Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 He should stay for as long as we are clearly paying him much more than he'll get anywhere else, which will be until his contract expires. All credit to him if he decides to take a pay cut, drop back down the leagues and play instead.

Mowgli Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 I've said it before but contracts work both ways. If we want some of our younger players honouring their contracts in full we should be prepared to do the same with the more experienced pro's. Barnard is way dow the pecking order now but is actually not that old. He should work hard on the training ground and try and work his way back into Nigel's plans. If he wants to move on we should help him but otherwise we should stick by him and try to develop him here.

If he wants to move on we should help him but otherwise we should stick by him and try to develop him here. The problem now is that it is much more difficult to work your way back into the managers plans. Once the squad is name in the first week in September that is it until January (unless you name less than 25). Even then you can only come into the squad if someone else is "dropped", so the question then would become who would you like to see dropped for Barnard to get back in, Lambert, Sharp, Rodriquez or Chung (because that is the reality)? I would hope none get a serious season-long injury. The other scenario is that Barnard sticks around and we get relegated (another scenario I hope not to see), even then would he get back in? Nope. Lets face facts, Barnard, together with Forte and Dickson are surplus to requirements and will I am sure not be around come the end of August, either due to transfer or at least a loan. MarkSFC Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 I doubt he will ever be good enough for the prem. Did ok for us for a while but he should move to the Championship and see if he can score 20 plus there. Only then may he be deserving of a chance. Fitzhugh Fella Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 Don't write him off too quickly - I am not sure Sharp is that much better. Don't forget he got an extension to his contract only last season and NC gave a character witness statement in his court case. A loan is likely. I'm very interested to see what a pre-season of our training will do for Sharp because, even though he scored goals, I was very disappointed with his speed over the first 10-20 yards. If we can do with him what we did with Lambert, he could become a very good striker at PL level, which would push Barnard well into the background. VectisSaint Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 (edited) I am happy having him as 5th choice good strength upfront, but i am sure he is not happy being behind Lambo Jay Rod Sharp and Lee. I think some are still not quite grasping the squad situation or the fact that he did not go to training camp in France. He won't be named in the 25-man squad, so he won't be able to play, except in cup matches or development squad games. He is also not 5th choice, Guly would be ahead of him as well, so at least 6th choice. He was left behind for a reason and will be shipped out one way or the other by September. I seriously doubt we will see him in a Saints shirt again, unless its in the dev/u21 squad. Forgot that De Ridder and Lens can also play striker, so guess that would put him 8th. Neil Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 Based on Barnard not travelling on tour, and no knowledge or mention of him missing out on the tour because of injury, I think we can safely assume that he's not in the plans.

If Sharpe were not that much better then NA would acquire someone else, not replace him with Barnard, it actually wouldn't surprise me if we see another new striker yet, although I'm chuffed with what we have, is Hooper definitely a no-go now? In any case Sharpe is miles ahead of Barnard.
ericb Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 Barnard isn't good enough and nostalgia has no place in the team. He probably wasn't even good enough for the top half of the championship but due to being injured/in court didn't have a chance to show that, so people still love him from league one. As with so many of our players that seem to be loved on here i feel it's probably worth pointing out again that running around a lot doesn't really make you a good footballer or Brett Ormerod would've played for Barcelona. PinkScarf Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 Pink Scarf and the girls won't be happy. Pink Scarf logging in from the Bahamas. Barney has been loyal and we want him to stay and fight for his place. Saints will make good use of him in the Cup Competitions which will help rest other players and help us progress to the later rounds. Topping up the sun tan but will be back to support the boys for the Man City Away Game.
This Charming Man Posted 24 July, 2012 Share Posted 24 July, 2012 Wasn't good enough for us in the NPC, certainly not good enough for the Premiership. Imagine he'll go on loan to a rubbish NPC team or a decent L1 side.

I know this is meant in a light-hearted way, but how would you propose that Barny stays and helps out in the cup competitions? That would mean playing 1 or perhaps 2 competitive matches this side of Christmas (3rd Round of FA Cup is in January). Paying someone on good money to do nothing for 4 months is a nonsense. He doesn't need to play in the development/u21 squad, everyone knows what Barney is capable of, and in the end it is clear that NA does not consider him to be in his plans. Harsh but fair. Saints will be looking to sell him, or if that doesn't work loan him out with an option to buy.
