Have to admit, mine was Jimmy Case, when we signed him I remember thinking, WHY, hes past it, ex liverpool player wont be interested/go through the motions/heart wont be in it etc etc. But how wrong I was and the fact he played more for us than he did Liverpool spoke volumes for him. Gave 100% every match, looked after the young players, flattened anyone that flattened them as their "minder" and was quite a player too! Also what a nice guy too always happy for a chat, remember thinking "whos the old guy with the hearing aid" taking so long at a cash machine in Warsash, for him to turn round and it was him.

Jos will probably get a few mentions here, but for me it was Marsden. I didn't expect an awful lot tbf, as He never did a lot in his career before joining us, but some excellent performances and "that" goal means we'll remember him for a long time to come.

Jos Hooiveld is the obvious one.

For me though it was Fox, wondered why we signed him straight away after Dickson and Harding were decent for us in 10/11.

But it was obvious straight away he was a step up from both and gave us a new dimension from set pieces.

Paul Williams and Paul Telfer both did quite a lot to build the foundations of Strachan's sides early on, both Coventry rejects as far as I was concerned.

Beattie eventually got good as well, but looked pretty useless as a makeweight for a while.

Lee Todd came along from Stockport and was to be the dogs bollix

after seeing a few televised games of him in cup games. Unfortunatly he turned out to be just bollix.

Marsden for me...

Looked at the end of his shelf life at Brum - How wrong I was and how good he was for us...

Good shout, he was definitely one I thought was a waste of money.

Micky Evans

Very good shout, forgotten all about him. He wasn't the most skillful player ever to wear the red and white, but he did put his head where it was going to hurt (post at the Dell still shudders at the mention of his name) and scored some vital vital goals in relegation flirting season.

Crouch. At the time he was a bit of a laughing stock, but you have to say that his move here made him. He then turned into an international level striker playing for one of the biggest clubs in Europe, quite a swing from 12 months previously when he was just a villa reserve.

Sure proved me wrong. Thought he would be good. He wasn't

This!!! I thought he was the final part of the jigsaw, that cultured midfielder would would run the game for us.

He was ****.

Another vote for Crouchie, I remember at the time it was us and Bolton who were after him, and I was gutted when we pipped them to the post & signed him. How wrong was I.....

Carlton Palmer is the one that immediately springs to mind.

Who knew he would be so good, at least for a season.

Agree - did a lot of donkey work for MLT that season was unlucky not to get player of the season himself. Surprised by how well he performed that particular season.

Jos Hooiveld, I was prepared to trust the manager but admit I thought to myself that his signing was a bit underwhelming, but he's been absolutely immense. Some of the comments on here when he signed were seriously out of order and highly embarrassing. I can't believe he's not even been a saint for a year yet!

Recent times Kelvin Davis, especially as he had a slow start with us.

Also id say for me Paul Telfer, Chris Marsden and Gregorsz Rasiak is my wildcard. Didn't think hed do too well but i thought he was excellent. 33 goals in 84 games, most in that 06/07 season.

+1 remember this well - can remember people on the ols Saints forever forum at the time - like NOOOOOO they are ****e, Coventry rejects ect - turned out to be pretty decent signings after all.

Beasant. Arrived just after his nightmare at Chelsea and was a bit old I thought. Proved pretty solid but that Barnes goal was a shocker.

Have to agree with this one. He'd suffered from some right howlers at Chelsea and it smacked of another - not good enough, over-the-hill player like Speedie, Dixon, Hurlock etc. However, I thought he actually did very well for us overall.

Beasant, Palmer, Marsden - each time I greeted the news with a resounding "wtf". Some of my favourite players - (well in a journeyman enjoying a career renaissance kind of way)
