alpine_saint Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 He has it in him to be a good player, and did well this evening. There doesnt seem to be any interest in him from other clubs. He came in from the cold in the spring time and did alright for a couple of games, but disappeared again. Is he worth committing one of our 25 squad places to or not ??? beatlesaint Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 If we bring in another forward or midfield player who has pace and can play out wide then no. If we dont sign anyone like that then he could well make it into the 25. Personally I wouldnt take the risk, you cant trust the guy.

sfc4prem Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 I want him out tbh, but he has got it in him to play well. Wouldn't put him in the 25 though, especially if we sign someone.
S-Clarke Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 Well he's throwing his hat into the ring during pre-season, that's for sure. What the motives are for that, who knows. I still don't trust the guy really, not the right sort of character that you see associated with us these days. But I think he's got a chance of being in the 25, simply because he's on our training camp. If he wasn't in the plans I doubt he'd have gone with the squad, he would have bene left behind with the likes of Forte, Barnard, Dickson etc. - so NA clearly thinks he can have some sort of impact. Time will tell.
Saint Charlie Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 Has the potential to be good and fits lots of systems. Good on him for getting his head down and having a good pre season. Always works hard on the pitch and wants the ball, hopefully he feels fully involved as he seems to be a confidence player.

Yes but as someone has just said its in his interests to do so. If he impresses and gets into the squad will he revert back to his old self, job done ? Like I said I dont trust him and would be wary of his motivation.

Badger Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 His motivation will be to play in the Premier League. and when he hasn't started or in the first five or six games will he remain motivated or sulk ? Simple answer - offload as soon as possible, preferably, trade in for Phillips or Ince at Blackpool, or whoever.
Gambol2K9 Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 Such a hit and miss player. He has all the ability and potential it just doesnt always translate into performances. Still a major question mark over his attitude.

Saintandy666 Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 Well, he wants to move to a London club to be close to his family. But I doubt any will take him on, because his attitude stinks. He had the potential to be a great player, and I think he showed that at Blackpool. A solid premiership player, but again... his attitude stinks so until that changes... the saint in winchester Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 Oh what a negative lot you all are! Yes, he has an ego; he thinks he is Premiership class. Well, guess what, this club has made it to the Premiership. How about give him the benefit of the doubt? He's capable of playing both wide and centre. and we need wide players right now. So unless we sign a really good winger, for me, we have to keep him playing and motivated (aka hungry!). If his attitude or his performances start to stink, he won't get a game! His loss. Until then, welcome back to the fold, JP.
ottery st mary Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 NA knows what he is doing and will get the best out of Punch. Very talented lad who will be worth his place in the side/squad if as seems he has been putting the effort in every day at training . Always impressed by his talent and it appears NA is getting a return for the benefit of the Mighty Saints.

Mowgli Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 Puncheon fell out with the club and behaved poorly. He has apologised and got his head down to work his way back into contention. He fits in well with the squad who like him and he clearly has a lot of talent. Keep him.
shurlock Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 His attitude is a red herring. I don't actually think he's good enough other to be a squad player. He's certainly not better than some of the players we've been linked with in that position.

Dig Dig Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 He's a good player and versatile. I always thought NA would give him a chance this season and I still think he will. CanadaSaint Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 As others have said, I don't think Puncheon would be on the tour if NA didn't think he had a part to play this season, and if NA and Cortese were not willing to turn the page, if possible. But the clearest sign is this: http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2856620,00.html? The appearance of a Puncheon story on the OS is a fairly clear indication that he at least will be given (yet another) chance.

Sour Mash Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 Putting his attitude problems to one side, I've never seen much from him to suggest get offers all that much as a footballer. Not the standard we should really be looking at.
manji Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 I would trust Adkins judgement on whether he has a good attitude or not rather than some dim witted posters on this board. Fitzhugh Fella Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 I was pleased when NA rehabilitated him last season but then disappointed with some of his performances. SNSUN Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 As a squad player and extra attacking outfit, then keep him. I very much dislike him, but if he's got a place in the 25 without us having to leave someone else out, or us not being able to make another signing, then fine. If we can bring in better, then do it, and ship him out. I suppose ultimately it depends on whether he's prepared to give his all every game, and to be frank, I don't think he will. He's a player that wants to play at the top level without actually trying very hard. A la the Wayne Bridge situation, sitting on a bench earning a fortune for doing nothing, I get the feeling Punch would love that situation. If we keep him, I hope he proves us all wrong, but I don't see it.

ottery st mary Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 We all know of the immature , petulant , spoilt , brattish , ungrateful , self centred ,disrespectful person that Punch was alleged to have been:rolleyes: BUT...our Manager and staff appear to be saying to this very talented footballer now or never..IF the lad has seen the light and realises he will play sometimes and other times be on the bench..SQUAD player..he can be a part of the Saints future.. Some think he is not good enough, some think he will run off and sulk at the first chance , some think he will be traded at the first opportunity... But if he continues with the current positive attitude..his undoubted talent and worth to the team/squad will be invaluable...... He could be a revelation or given a new bicycle for further travels...... BUT peeps, never say this lad ...... IS not good enough to play in the Premier league..many teams would have this lad at the drop of a hat ..if his attitude and application had been 100%.... NA may well be the man to have turned our Punch around... Could someone get their spare bicycle ready just in case:p
Chez Posted 22 July, 2012 Share Posted 22 July, 2012 He has got the first touch for the Prem, but has to improve on the performances he put in when returning to the fold last season. pingwing Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 Most of us seem to be blindly forgetting how utterly useless he was after his first 2 games after coming back from QPR and apologising. He didn't feature most of the run in because he was shocking, away at West Ham he didn't track back and was caught in possession by 10 man West Ham constantly. Even in his cameo appearance against Coventry he looked monumentally off the pace at 4-0. Not a prem starter in anyone sensible books (Holloway can have him though), get rid as fast as possible as he's just going to be causing more problems than his pace is ever worth. Saint_clark Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 Personally I think there's too much risk of him throwing a paddy, but the fact he went abroad with the squad rather than stayed behind with Barnard, Forte etc. makes it obvious that he's in Adkins plans for this season. pingwing Posted 23 July, 2012 Share Posted 23 July, 2012 Laughable Amazingly everyone is entitled to their own opinions and are entitled to express them. It is laughable that people are willing to run to this mess of a players defence because 1 in 20 of his performances are just about championship standard that suddenly he's got a chance to actually be a decent prem player. His problems appear to come form attitude, it's been half a year since he's been allowed back into the first team properly and has made very few appearances. Genuinely think this is down to him just not being good enough opposed to some magical attitude change. His performances when he was given a chance in the season just were not good enough to justify a starting place (or quite often a spot on the bench) so I don't see why he should be seen as some sort of magical answer just because he's got his wish and is contracted to a prem club. Might well be back up to the first team squad over the year (as he was last year) but I don't see a future at the club for him and it's a bit pointless wasting our time.
