Evian v Saints

Top stuff. Sounds like we dominated for large parts of the game too. Pre-season is going rather nicely so far.

According to the twitter it was comfortable for us, Evian barley got a look in. We should have won by a much bigger scoreline.

Anyone know how far into their preseason Evian are?

Puncheon has turned over a new leaf..so to speak...

Impressed me so far....NA has effectively a new signing.

Words from NA and NC....Punch knows it is last chance saloon....and will grasp his chance.

He has the talent to be in the first team. If only his attitude was up to that. We shall see this season.

Nice result - although it's not about the result as such, it's still good for morale to see a positive results from the hard work prep sessions.

Puncheon looks like he is well and truly a reformed character - his interview on Saintsplayer I thought came across very well - he's reasonably eloquent and seems keen to do well. As others have said, he could be a key player this season.

Is it me, or does it appear that Rickie is finding it hard to make an impact in pre-season? I'm looking forward to seeing how he looks at home if he plays against Ajax.

Chappers needs to have a long hard look at the video and ask himself how managed to miss from 10 yards out and the goal gaping - even I would have scored that.

Clyne looked class in his cameo appearance - I will be godsmacked if he doesn't start games from the offset. Morgan is looking incredibly fit and playing really well - our sports science people are doing an excellent job with the players.

It's all coming together - role on the new season.

I don't believe Ricky can crank his body into shape like the other players because of all the baggage he is carrying from previous injuries. Last pre-season was the same and he broke down, not getting fully fit until well into the season. Taking things that little bit slower this season should have him fully fit when it matters.

I find it strange that Ricky can no longer execute those power free kicks, straight up and down over the wall. I feel that is mainly due to his body saying no, rather than any loss of technique. Either way we need someone else for the free kicks, far too long without the returns.

Well, at least we can be confident that the sports science people seem to know what they're doing and know how to deal with all the individuals in the team. Not sure about your point on free kicks though, I'd say it pretty well is all technique and confidence and not the body. My passing is still pretty good, but at my age it's just that people get to the ball earlier and free kicks are just a chance for a breather...

Yeah I thought the sports sciences was all a bit mumbo jumbo but we're in danger of recording our first ever winning record for pre seasons, so maybe there is something in it. Like in the week when we learned that Nigel Adkins personally tastes the urine of every first team player before training I thought that's a bit mad! But you know if it helps to keep Lambert in trim or whatever, and if Adkins don't mind then who am I to judge?

New Captain?

Hooiveld was captain because in the 1st half Hammond and Fonte weren't playing.

I think there is a reasonable chance Steven Davis might be the Saints captain next season. He has captained both Rangers and his country and will likely play more often than Hammond next season.

Yes, I hadn't realised.

Apologise Thedelldays...? I was merely telling wireframebox something in a perfectly reasonable manner.

Got back from France/Switzerland about 8hrs ago. Probably about 50/60 Saints fans at the game, think the total crowd was around 850 odd.

Didn't think we looked that great and Evian missed loads of sitters, they should've won comfortably. Though you can never read too much into these games. The main thing is getting the fitness up to scratch. Ward-Prowse looks a very good player though. Puncheon scored a decent goal.

Met Lambert, De Ridder and Puncheon. They were sound and came and had a chat with us.

Something radical has changed in Ricky's free kicks, both in execution and results. During Rickys first season he was unstoppable, better than many in the Premier. Several of the free kicks were straight blasts that got up and down over the wall that no keeper could do anything about, When your technique is that good and the results so good, there is no question about technique.

Have a close look at Ricky's free kicks last season and you will see the style has changed completely, wrapping his foot round the ball to get turn and up and down, completely different to the good old days. Results wise last season his best return was a goal from a deflection off the wall, just no where near his previous best.

Why would you change a style which results in you being one of the top free kick takers in all leagues, to an absolutely minimal direct threat? Something has forced Ricky to take this path and because of the change in style for no result, I would strongly suspect this is his body saying no.

I would strongly suggest it was that everyone in the Championship knew he could do that and the keepers were much better so his success rate would have dropped significantly, so instead we worked on numerous variations on the 2 CB far post routine - and scored from a few of them.

Also, he's slimmed down a fair bit in the last year, small changes in your body shape and how the muscles lie can make it difficult to repeat a technique over time.
