Saints vs Seagulls rivalry

I'll admit it. During our time in League One and the Championship, I really grew to dislike Brighton. I know I'm not alone. I've seen at least one person from SaintsWeb winding up the Brighton fans on North Stand Chat. A few things p!ssed me off.

  • "We're League One Champions" - yup, like it means anything.
  • Most things Gus Poyet said in relation to Southampton (Dag and Red)
  • My mate getting racist abuse from Brighton fans, then getting arrested for homophobic abuse at St. Marys (got completely thrown out in court, by the way)
  • Simulation and fouling

There are some things that I have taken comfort from. The three-nil at St. Marys was a lot of fun, especially because of the horrendously funny penalty decision. I also loved that the first defeat at the AMEX was inflicted by their arch-rivals.

I realise that most Brighton fans are alright (some sensible stuff on NSC occasionally), but they do have some right nobs too.

What's the score? Do we still dislike Brighton? Did we ever? Have we won now we've left them behind?

I live in Brighton and basically football has just happened here since the new stadium. Good for the City, they are excited about their team and should make the top half again this season.

Can't really blame them for gloating in L1 as they beat a far bigger club to the title so far play to them.

Still not really sure why they hate Adkins and all that guard of honour stuff was bizarre - didn't see anyone giving Reading one last season?

I kind of hope they do well seeing as I live, but the arrogance of some of the fans makes it difficult.

This. I live in Worthing and have always kept a close eye on Brighton. I took a lot of abuse from friends when they won L1. Who's laughing now! COYR!

Was at the Amex stadium for a work thing a couple of weeks ago. Absolute rubbish considering all the hype. Whats with the stands at either end? I've played in front of bigger at school boy level.

And what the **** are those white blobs on the seats suppose to be?!! Seagulls? Looks like a seagull has taken a big **** to me.

What rivalry??!!

my thoughts too.

I can't recall so much " rivalry" between the two clubs, certainly a few seasons in the 1950's ...but we played Bournemouth more frequently in Div. 3 days. but after we moved up to (old Div.2) in 1961 B&H were relegated in 1961/62

and spent a lot of time in the (old) Div.3 and Div.4) ..L1 / L2 as is now). They did have a little flurry of success in the old Div.1 but I would never regard our games as derbies or any sort of rivalry........

You could say the same happened with Reading last season, except their manager isn't a knob.

It's all meaningless and because neither Brighton or Reading at the time (the latter still) don't have a real rival.

Bournemouth the same. All 3 clubs have mong fans.

Living in Worthing, I chuffing hate Brighton.

All their fans love the stadium and bang on about it 24/7.

I don't think that we consider them our rivals, but for me, well, I just plain don't like them. Lets put it down to geography.

When the Brighton fans see this thread on their forum it will be "Well they don't think we are rivals but they are the ones who have a thread about us on their forum etc...."

The best thing Ive ever seen on their forum was where a guy seriously said he would rather have won league One and not been mid table in the Champ (where they were) than coming second in L1 and get promoted from the Championship (where we were).

Just born by circumstance, they are our rivals in the same sense that Torquay and Plymouth are.

Not a great example tbf, we're closer to Coventry and Birmingham (as you should know ;)) than we are to Torquay and Plymouth!

Neighbouring county, 60ish miles along the coast suggests there's a justifiable 'regional' rivalry but tbh I really don't feel any particular dislike for them, no more than most other clubs when we we're up against them.

Bit of an edge the past couple of years through circumstance and enjoyed our trips down there in the 70s/80s ;) but generally happy to have a close away day.

There is absolutely no rivalry between Us and Brighton/Reading. Both teams are jealous of us. I personally couldn't care one iota what goes in at either club, unlike most of them who seem to be obsessed with us

I think they'll probably disagree with you tbf, it is us Saints fans that are contributing to a new thread about them. I doubt there's much difference between the two sets of fans to be honest.

So who are our biggest rivals now then? There used to be a team in blue down the road, but they probably rate on the same level as Crawley now and I can't seem to get excited about them either.

Are we going to base our rivalry on locality or on nobbishness? if it's locality I guess it's probably Bournemouth, but let's face it....Bournemouth??? They'll always have a chip on their shoulder, but you just want to pat them on the head and help them on their way . I think the only reason they would end up in Southampton would be from a state of age-related confusion (not that I mean to belittle senility or Alzheimers) - so I guess that leaves Reading, but if it's nobbishness then I guess it could be Brighton or even West Ham?

Not overly bothered by them. Was only bothered when we were both going for the L1 Title.

Aren't they filling in the corners of the ground this season?

Oh and Poyet is a c*nt.

It looked like they were extending the south stand and either the east or west stand, whichever is currently smallest. Didn't look like anything was happening in the corners

Now the Skates are toast we don't need a rival to define ourselves.

We are Southampton, we do what we want. ;)

I went to a wedding about 2 months ago and one of the guest was part of the ground staff at the Amex (he is a spurs fan)...

he said it found it funny how Brighton as a club in general got so easily wound up by saints

he also agreed that Poyet is a total ******...

It was a fun rivalry when we were going for the League 1 title but I think we've both moved on since then. As a derby they aren't really any more local than Bompey, Swindon or Reading. I think they're more interested in Palace since they got promoted.

I'd say there was a bit of a rivalry in late 70s and early 80s when we were both challenging for promotion to the top flight and then establishing ourselves in the old first division. It was probably also boosted by being about the time Portsmuff totally fell off the radar screen and we're in a shambles on and off the pitch (nothing changes)..But for me that was about the extent of it until they were promotion rivals a year or so ago. In between, I think many had a bit of a soft spot given the shafting they were receiving from their owners/board..Poyet & his entourage weren't very impressive with their words, nor their style of play & theatrics, but I couldn't get overly worked up about them and just considered them as one season promotion rivals (in the same way as West Ham & Reading this year). It was obvious their supporters would support their manager, so couldn't also get too excited about their response to us (although did think some of the anti Adkins/Saints stuff was a tad small time!).

I was brought up in Sussex and live in Brighton. All 3 of my brothers and many of my friends support them. It was the draw of Keegan that made me a Saint in 1980.

They've always been my second team and I've always generally looked out for them and hoped they win but that has changed over the past 3 seasons.

In the 09/10 season when we drew 2-2 at Withdean they all grizzled at Hammond celebrating in front of them. Then the following year they were over the top with NA's 'keep up' comments. They completely milked the fact that they beat us to the title despite only winning by 3 points with a worse GD. They forgot of course that was the only time in the past 50 years they have finished above us. I think actually I have a higher posts tally on their NSC than on here.

In short, a decent homely fan base who have become a bit deluded what with their recent investment and new Fisher Price stadium. I think the rivalry will cease now were not in the same leagues.

I really like it from the outside. With the sweeping roofline its a little different and sits down into the hillside. Yes it looks a bit crap inside, but thats because its basically not finished. When you see it with the additional 8,000 seats in this season it will look a lot better. However it cost three times what SMS did, and its hard to see where the additional money has gone.

To be honest the spats we've had with the likes of Brighton and Bournemouth the last few seasons were fun (made for better atmosphere at the games IMO) OK not on the same level as pompey but certainaly a bit of needle between the fans (and managers) helps to get the crowd going. Compare that to the coming season were no one will dislike us (well maybe WHU fans...maybe) and other teams fans (even ****ing Swansea and Wigan fans) will just look down on us with condescending looks while counting us as 3pts in the bag....

Agree a bit of needle adds to games. Nothing more enjoyable thsan sticking it up people who thought you werre going to roll over.

I've actually quite enjoyed the rivalry.

Are we going to have any grudge matches next season? Spurs is never going to be as tasty without Redknapp to shout at. No team in the Prem really dislikes us, do they?

Comparisons will inevitably be drawn between Southampton and Reading because we're from a similar neck of the woods and both just been promoted. I'd love it if we accidentally hammered the scouse clubs, but there aren't many games next season where I want to be there because I really want to see the other team take a hiding. Pompey and Brighton both qualified for that honour last season.

There is no rivalry as far as I'm concerned, not a huge fan or Brighton fans, but then again I'm not a huge fan of Reading, Bournemouth, Man United, QPR and West Ham fans.

Rivalry comes in different strengths though. Our rivalry with Pompey is at the extreme end, but surely you don't have to be at the posting turds through the letterboxes level for a rivalry to exist in some form. Even Football Manager models gradations of rivalry - I'm sure MLG feeds them the "Disliked clubs" information.

Personally, I think any team you get a kick out of beating, just because it's them and especially if there's a bit of history between you, is a rival. Appreciate other views may differ.

I felt a little pee off, when it became clear we were not going to catch them, in the same way Reading pipped us to the title this year. This is because I know a lot of Reading fans, and used to live and work there. I used to live in Brighton as well, and I love the place.

My main problem is that it had to be these 2 clubs. I used to watch them at Elm Park, and the Goldstone ground, as the smaller club that you used to go along and watch and they were no harm to Saints at all, but all of a sudden they were above us.

I am sure that Reading will return to the N Power soon, and Brighton will hang around the mid to the lower regions of the same league, as we are battling to get into Europe. As long as we stay above them both, I do not have a problem with them at all, and would again go and watch them if I was at a loose end.

The above is not rivalry, but me as a Saints fan thinking we should be above this lot. Since we got relegated I have hated the fact we have been below Wigan. The season we went down, they went up, and I really did not like that. Same when we lose to newly promoted teams. But if we are back above these teams in the league, I have no problem or dislike of them, but as long as we are looking down. It is just the teams I think we SHOULD be above.

This cannot be said for the skates, I hate them, I still think they should be punished further, and even though they are now 2 leagues below us, I still hate them, and that can only come with real rivalry.

There was a little bit of rivalry down there in about 1986.

One or two disagreements going on.

Cracking day, as was millwall away in that cup run.

10,000 saints were at the goldstone , how many walking along the track towards brighton after the train broke down? :)

am i just seeing things through rose tinted glasses or were away days in the fa cup much more special back then?
