I think this statement from the BBC is telling:

"The cinema where the attack took place is just under 20 miles from Columbine High School, where two students shot dead 13 people in 1999"

Americas crazy "Rights to arms policy" just breeds crazed gunmen which in turn creates copycat crazed gunmen?

And the oft-quoted defence of that policy, being 'the right to defend yourself' would've made f*ck-all difference in this (and many similar) cases.

Makes no difference Geezer, look at Dunblane and Raoul Moat but guns are illegle in the UK, nutcases like this will commit these awful crimes no matter what.

Hey mate, how are you?

You're right to a certain point, there are nutters everywhere, but these atrocities are more frequent over your side of the pond where it is a lot easier to get hold of the tools to do it. It's like any law, someone will find away around it, that doesn't mean you should make it easy for them.

That's true, but it makes it a lot harder to do so if guns are hard to get hold of. And I imagine the planning stage is easier to get through as well because you don't have to conceal the fact you are buying/owning guns.

Also, a lot of shootings in the US are just went people snap. And sometimes people do just snap and a person which just loses it one day with a gun compared to someone without a gun makes a lot of difference.

The event in the US is absolutely awful.

Genuinely not sure of the stats, but I wonder if you took the population of the states, and compared it to the sum of the biggest countries in europe, then compared these attrocities, whether they really would be more frequent in the states? It seems they happen a lot in europe too, in the space of (um... not long?) we've had raoul moat, the grenade/gun attack in liege and the nutter in Norway... just saying...

Pretty sure they are staggeringly higher here in the States.

It's a sad state of affairs, and these things are going to happen. And you can't really disarm a country where it's been a right to carry a gun for centuries. There are too many of them in circulation, many in the wrong hands, how can you tell someone they have no right to defend themselves. It is pitiful.

It was actually Dunblane that made the (then) government ban all cartridge handguns as a response. Besides it is still perfectly legal to own certain guns in the UK providing you have a licence.

I don't think anyone is saying that you have no right to defend yourself, just not with a bloody gun!

How else are you supposed to defend against a gun? Look, I loath the vile things, don't get me wrong, but when you have millions of them in circulation because of ****ed up laws stemming from the birth of the country....? It's a horrible situation with no real solution IMO.

The availability of semi-automatics though is unbelievably ridiculous.

I don't know Baj, you could be right. What would you do?

Interesting piece below in the Guardian, it's title explains that 84 people are shot to death every day!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/20/america-needs-talk-gun-control-wake-colorado

2 other staggering quotes for me were:

"America's president, Barack Obama, understands this. The number of homicide victims in his home town of Chicago this year has outnumbered those of US troops serving in Kabul."

"Americans are no more prone to mental illness or violence than any other people in the world. What they do have is more guns: roughly, 90 for every 100 people. And regions and states with higher rates of gun ownership have significantly higher rates of homicide than states with lower rates of gun ownership."

You'll find kids, toddlers, babies at all manner of films. It's fairly normal to watch a film involving rape, murder or swearing with a baby screaming in the row behind you.

Just so long as there aren't any boobies.

Find it amazing that there's nothing stopping you from taking a 5yo to see, for example, Saw or Hostel. I know its typical libertarian America but some common sense does need to be applied to protect people from themselves.

So he had an Armalite rifle (semi-auto assault rifle), a couple of Glocks, and a Remington shotgun, all legally bought from gun stores over the last few months. Surely that's more guns than anyone can realistically need?

Distant relative of a mate of mine was killed protecting his mates in this.

Colorado still has the death penalty but hasn't used it for 50-odd years.

Well surprise, surprise. Just two days after the shooting and we're already knee-deep in conspiracy theories. It was all a US government PsyOps operation. Holmes was an Oswald-like patsy. And it's all because of an upcoming UN vote on a small arms treaty. Freaking lunacy.

It might be picked up by conspiracy theory weirdos, but I wouldnt be at all surprised if there wasnt some kind of rumour mongering going on by the NRA or other gun lobby organisations to deflect attention or public support away from gun control.

These kinds of incidents always freak out the gun lobby. The fact is, though, that gun control has become laxer, not tighter, since Columbine, so god knows what will happen now - perhaps it'll become a requirement that all Americans must keep a smorgasbord of semi-automatic weapons otherwise reserved for special forces in their homes.

The whole constitutional 'right to bear arms' is smoke and mirrors anyway. As written, it's tied in with the right to raise militias (basically to defend against any counter-revolution from the British) and has nothing to do in intent with the right to enter cinemas, schools, banks, etc., and murder as many people as possible.
