Homicides at 30 year low.

"The number of murders and killings in England and Wales has fallen to the lowest level in nearly 30 years, Office for National Statistics figures show. Police recorded 550 homicides in 2011-12, 88 fewer than the previous year and the lowest number since 1983". According to the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18900384

Crime, especially crimes of violence have been falling not just in the UK but in Europe, North America and Asia. Any ideas about why that is, given that the economic and social conditions of the countries are different? Given that most killings are domestic, people killing family members how come you get a trend like that across the developed world? Maybe modern urban life is making us all more passive and compliant.

At a guess I'd say more modern views on women have lead to less domineering husbands who beat their wives.

Could be. But with less clear gender roles potentially there is more scope for conflict not less. Fights just seemed to be a more accepted way of sorting things out in the 1970s when I was growing up. They make the papers now.

Since when were murders described a homocides in the UK?

About 1600 at least. Homocide is killing another person. That is broken down into all kinds of categories of which murder and manslaughter are most common, but others like infanticide and assisted suicide also exist.

It's us using a stupid yank term. Like calling terrorists insurgents.

Fair enough, I just associate it with 1970's american cop shows, it's not usually a term used this side of the pond.

Thats probably because homocide is the catch all term here, not a specific chargeable offence. In the US its homocide 1 (murder) or homocide 2 (manslaughter) so you hear it on tv dramas much more.

You should be more worried about the more modern tricks the US have pulled with regard to language.

"Enemy combatants" was preferred over "prisoner of war" because you're not allowed to torture prisoners of war.

This dismal lack of productivity on behalf of this nations murdering classes appalls me. When I was a youngster you could get your throat slit just for asking for a refund at Woolworth's. Nowadays hoards of defenceless grannies and disabled people roam the streets in their mobility scooters free from even the merest hint of danger. I understand that even taxi drivers, prostitutes, and runaway teenagers now have a better that even chance of surviving into middle-age - do we have no lorry drivers left in this country anymore ?

You'd think even the laziest example of British youth could manage the odd bit of manslaughter every now and then - but even that now seems too much to ask.

Sod this, I'm off to Juarez Mexico where they at least still make some kind of decent effort.

I blame the benefits culture. Nobody wants to do the dirty jobs any more.

I'm guessing it's because it's harder to get away with it nowadays. There is CCTV everywhere, traffic cams that read your number plate, computers that can recognise your face, forensics are improving all the time and mobile phones give the Rozzers your pin point location 24hrs a day.

Maybe, but I would have thought that would affect the detection rate more than the number of actual killings. Most seemingly arent planned and are in the heat of the moment.
