Saints interested in Lens apparently?

Not really, we never really played like that. We've always had 2 central midfielders who sit back, protect the back 4 and spread it wide to attacking fullbacks and wingers. That's why Chaplow never worked out playing centrally, he pushed forward too much and upset the balance. We don't play with a Lampard/Gerrard type attacking midfielder who scores 15 goals a season.

I am amazed this passes so many people by

I've seen enough Premier League football over the years to know that Guly will be a fish out of water.

I guess NA was making plans for our return to the championship when he gave him a contract extension then?

Wether he is a fish out of water of a fish on a lilo, NA obviously rates him, therefore I would think he will get a game somewhere or other.

I know we play with 2 deep CM, but surely these players are earmarked for the RM spot. If, for example, we got Michu (yes i know he's going to swansea) then he'd probably play on the right and cut in as he's left footed, while that would let the full back go past him. I would espect it would be the same with Lens, although it does look like we may well be playing 4231 this season.

Some assumptions being made about our formation in the thread that need addressing...

Adkins has made it perfectly clear in recent interviews about our pre-season games, and training, that we've been working on tactics, and we have played 4-5-1/4-3-3 formations in games so far. To quote him directly:

We are working on different formations at this moment in time, so the two games we have this week will see a work in progress.

So I think fans need to get their head around the the fact that we don't have *A* formation, or *A* way of playing... we are developing several. Just like last season saw the Diamond formation used increasingly towards the end of the season, it seems the 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation is being introduced too, to give us even more variation.

So, a player like Lens could probably play wide in a 4-4-2, at the tip of a Diamond, or in one of the wide supporting positions in a 4-5-1/4-3-3.

And I am sure he will get a game somewhere along the line (Carling cup or whatever it is called now at least). Where is MLG with the stats when you need him? I am sure Guly played more times than Butterfield last season, he also plays in more positions and was usually chosen when fit. This would suggest NA rates him (whatever any of us may think). Butterfield is more of a back up than Guly imo.

I'm surprised Butterfield wasn't involved in some way in the Clyne deal. Even if it wasn't directly, I'm sure he would happily go back there and im sure they'd take him !?

Players have worked hard to get to the prem...think you would find most would be reluctant to leave even if they know they won't be a first choice.

Plus I think they all got a big wage hike. I doubt he will get anywhere near what he is on now anywhere else.

We can only name 25 players over 21 years old, it is likely Butterfield will be told he won't be one of those 25. He'll have little choice but to move if he wants to play next season.

It will be money versus playing I guess. If he is not in the 25, the best course would be for us to loan him out, paying a % of his wages. You never know, this may have already been agreed with CP. If we get through pre-season, without any RB injuries, he may be out on loan somewhere.

Sounds like a great job to me. You get a big pay rise, lots of training but you don't have to do any work - Perfect.

Quite. Maybe at 18 all you want to do is prove yourself. As a professional football player at 32 with retirement in view Butterfield will likely be thinking "pay off mortgage and top up pension" not "leave home, go to Darlington and get kicked"

Would be a star, he's not a striker by the way. Bizarrely I read an article on the dutch squad a few months back and there was a feature on this lad, he's seen more of a winger or an ''in the hole'' forward, not a striker - so he's potentially our RM type player. I'll see if I can dig out the link, but he was described as quick, nimble and very agile.

He's more than good enough for a team like Everton, so we'd be pulling off another coup.

Spurs had no strike partnerships, got confused where to play VDV, relied on Adebayor and found Defoe and Pavlychenko too inconsistent. Maybe Harry shouldn't have got rid of Bent and Crouch.

And look where it left them!!

What About the goal scoring box to box central midfielder so many are demanding?

I feel like banging my head against the wall when people say

"we need and out and out winger"

and

"we need a CM that gets into goal scoring positions/gets forward when possible"

yeah, totally rip up the way we play ffs

How do we play? More importantly, how will we play this season? As I alluded to above, Adkins is changing things and working on new tactics, so for anyone to say that we need *anything* too specific is a bit pointless. Obviously we all have ideas on how WE would like us to play and the types of player we want to sign but it's a little too black and white with some people. (Just like everything else regards SFC!)

That article is suggesting that we've actually tabled a bid whereas the Sky article was alluding to us just making an enquiry (I think)....

"PSV has recently placed a bid on Jeremain Lens of the English Premier League club Southampton received."

This might be more advanced (one way or the other) than we think?

Shut up you idiot

He is clearly being sarcastic.

Parodying all the morons on here who complain when we don't wrap up a deal in a few days.

Posters on here need to learn to recognise trolls/troll posts when they see them, and stop biting.

Easier said than done these days, especially if you don't know a poster. Most regulars will know adriansfc, but many won't.

All part of the 'fun'.

Where is Turkish today anyway?

can we have a sticky with a list of trolls and also add our already established list on ITKer's? I think this would be a helpful reference point for everyone and avoid the unpleasant scenes we have witnessed above.

We can also have a list of posters who take threads off topic.

Saint Charlie would weirdly end up in all three lists.

Internet mong boards are very serious business.

Graeme Bailey the Sky reporter said this deal is the "exciting" one that he talked about a couple of weeks ago.

What was stopping him naming names at the time? What's changed to prompt him to go public with it today? The fact that PSV have formally turned it down maybe?

(Sorry, too many dumb questions in one post!)
