Been playing a few times at Sevenoaks in Sherfield. Fancy trying out some other courses. Anyone else play and know any good courses which are 'relatively' cheap?

Sevenoaks are currently doing an offer which is fourball for £60 which is a pretty good offer.

We've been going up the Muni some evenings about 6, paying to play 9 holes on the 18 and just about getting all 18 holes in all for £11. Fantastic course imo.

Where is 'the Muni' ?

Yer i looked at that, looks like its about £20 a round as well which is pretty good. May well give that one a go this weekend.

7000+ off back tees, bring a good sand wedge because some of the bunkers are quite deep.

Sounds decent, definitely will look into that one! Where else do you play? I really like Sevenoaks it's really nice...horrible rough though. Have you played there ?

Paultons Park do a decent evening deal, think its £12 after 5pm. Might seem a long way from basingstoke but its 2 mins off J2 of the M27, so about 30 mins away on a decent run

My mate has just become the new manager at Paultons. I haven't played for years but when I did it was always the muni, 9 holes used to be free on a Leisure Card in the week.

Do you mean Sherfield Oaks?

The hampshire. Is a good course. Just off the a303 towards Andover. Also got royal south Winchester.

Royal Winchester and South Winchester are 2 different courses, and massively different styles.

I've played most of the courses in South Hampshire. Was a member at Stoneham but knees were finding it hard going so gave it up. I was also a member at Wellow and play there now. Lots of decent courses but price is an issue at some but 2 for 1 can reduce prices. Get Tee Times free magazine in golf clubs show special offer adverts.

I am utterly crap at golf

I did however, manage to really annoy my golfing mates

I played at paultons a couple of years ago and I chipped one from about 20 yards from the green and it ended up rolling in..the look on their faces was a picture

my one and only ever birdie (and complete fluke)

My experience of different courses is very limited, are there any in particular you would recommend/definitely avoid?

It really depends on a number of things. At the moment a lot of saturated courses, so the chalk based courses like Hockley, Royal Winchester, The Hampshire, Test Valley are pretty dry. The pay and play courses like Paultons, Cams Hall, Southampton Municipal etc are good. Most of the members/proprietary courses are pretty good. It really depends also on timings and the cost of the green fees you want to pay. I don't think there is anywhere around I would avoid except to find out if there were societies/competitions (especially Ladies ) on, adjacent to the time you want to book.

Sherfield Oaks are currently doing a deal which is Fourball for £60, so works out at £15 quid each which is why we've been going there. Also has 2 different 18 holes so keeps it a bit more interesting than just one course all the time. Was hoping to play a bit of twilight but the weather has been so bad recently, not been able to get any in !

try down hockley, right off the m3, great views of the downs, and le tiss used to be a member there, dunno if he still is. maybe u could have a round with him n Geoff :-D

Will look into Dummer as well then. Am going to give Test Valley a go this weekend I think, they've currently got an offer on as well so it's not too expensve. Thanks for all suggestions !

I would recomment trying to become mates with a few ppl from the local area who are members at excellent private members clubs.. Stoneham, Alresford, Royal Winchester, Hockley etc. Instead of paying £50/£60 a round you'll be at more reasonable £20-£25 price points for very good courses if with a member. I've been playing since I was a kid and have played near on everywhere round Hampshire either in comps or social so let me know of any other questions. you could also look at membership of a Crown golf course somewhere near your home. Gives you effective membership of a network of courses like Cams Hall, Paultons but also great courses like St Mellion for little golf breaks.. (I sound a bit like an old man.. I'm only 25!)

I play at Dummer quite often they seem to have some good twilight deals. And the work on the 17th & 18th is just about sorted quite a varied course.

I like the Sherfield Oaks course that goes out on a country amble for what feels like miles.

If you don't mind crossing the state line into Surrey Oak Park on the way to Farnham has a 9 and 18 hole course, or Pine Ridge near Frimley hospital have had a nice twilight deal in previous years and not a massive drive from Blazingsmoke.

Another that has popped into my head is Old Thorns at Liphook, they have had a round and a spot of grub deal, but you must mention the deal (if they still do it) to ensure you get the favourable rate.

Blue Mountain at Bracknell isn't to much of a chore to get to.

Thanks for all your suggestions I shall bare them in mind. You're right in saying it feels like the Waterloo course at Sherfield Oaks goes on forever! Very nice though, despite being pretty tough. The rough is horrible, and its proved a bit too challenging for me at the moment ! Had a good round yesterday around Test Valley which we found a lot more forgiving, but also had a few boring holes, but was pretty nice and the blazing sun helped ! Would certainly go back there and see if I can beat my score, but will also keep an eye on groupon as that Romsey deal looks pretty good ! Thanks again!

My mate is the head green keeper there and i played it 2 weeks ago. I know the members with higher handicaps are constantly moaning about the rough but the better golfers like it, makes it more challenging. He used to be a green keeper at the hampshire and i played there a few times it is ok but not as good as sherfield. Tynley Park near Hook is a good track and think it isn't to expensive either played there a few times. Anyway good golfing and ill pass your opinion on the rough on to my mate lol.

Ha. I can certainly understand why the higher handicapped players struggle...as basically if you get in the rough, you lost your ball, or even if you find it, you can't get out !

Botley Park is a good knock as is Southwick Park ( The old navy course).

The latter is shorter than many but the greens are the most testing I have played in Hampshire.

I struggled when i played there to be honest as well think i lost 3 or 4 balls. I played the waterloo in the morning and was meant to play the wellington in the afternoon but the rain stopped play. Which course you prefer there.

The wife has booked me and my 2 boys in at Old Thorns on Friday as a birthday treat, never played here before, any opinions?

Lovely course Mick. Played about half a dozen times although not that recently. I believe the owners are/were something to do with a Japanese business or something where lot's of them play, so it's a well designed, beautiful course. Some interesting par 3's with elevated tees. Real mixture really, quite up and down, with some long 4's too. You'll enjoy it.

Allis and Thomson designed it. I could be wrong but I think it was owned at one time by a famous little Japanese lady golf fanatic that was noted for having everything she wore or used, pink.

Played Weybrook and Test Valley recently. Both nice courses however I think Weybrook is a bit more interesting. Test Valley is very open, quite nice, but kind of feels like it is half finished.

Weybrook was really nice with some more interesting greens than I am used to. Also got my best score despite playing in the worst weather I have played in so far. Few decent holes over water as well which always adds a bit. Going to play dummer next weekend I think which my friends played on today, and they said it was really nice.s
