Saint Garrett Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 My other thought is...Why would ANYONE even consider going to Portsmouth in their current state ? More than likely they won't get paid and could be out of a job in a few months anyway. Surely joining someone like Oxford would be more beneficial to the player than going there. S-Clarke Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 He's a free agent. Brian Howard is also on trial with them. But Donny's chairman said ''We'd have loved to have kept Gilly, but once he became aware of what another club could offer him, we couldn't match that.'' It's horrendous that they're still able to offer more money than Doncaster, it drives me mad. It's not fair in anyway shape or form, how can a club in admin outbid a relatively well-run club? It's just sheer arrogance.

stevegrant Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 It's a no-lose situation for the players, go on "trial" with a club you know won't be allowed to sign you any time soon, but with a club with a relatively recent PL record, get your fitness levels up in a semi-competitive environment and then wait for other similar-sized clubs who will actually pay you to come calling. stevegrant Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 If Doncaster are still paying his wages, what do they get out of it ? Doncaster will only be paying him for this month. Standard terms of a player's contract in this country is that the club will pay the player for another month after the end of the contract if the player has yet to find another club. As he's officially out of contract at Doncaster, they have no say in the matter.

He won't be playing competitive games because Pompey can't sign anyone. Assuming he gets games in friendlies, he'll be putting himself in the shop window for other clubs to sign him on a proper contract.
Matthew Le God Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 Pompey whilst in administration are offering deals to players that were at fellow relegated Championship clubs that are "way out of their price range". Doncaster Rovers don't have a CVA to pay and nor have they written off £140m+ worth of debt. Doncaster Rovers manager Dean Saunders... “I wanted to sort something out with Gilly but we’ve spoken to his agent and another club has been in. What they’re offering him is way out of our price range so he won’t be coming back to us I’m afraid." http://www.southyorkshiretimes.co.uk/sport/football/doncaster-rovers/saunders-confirms-attempts-to-bring-gillett-back-to-doncaster-rovers-are-over-1-4735038

I know Steve, but it is an indication of what they are planning to do if allowed. Seems they never learn, and whilst not learning it is at the detriment to sporting intregity of League One and fellow teams like Doncaster. Had Pompey not made such an offer to Gillett, he may well have been with Doncaster this pre-season. Instead Gillett and his agent have been taken in by the £'s "offered" by Pompey. Same with Dumbaya. Im sure pompey would not mind to boost the numbers fort he trip and get decent players in for training

The9 Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 A perfectly competent League One sideways passer. Why anyone who has ever actually played professional football would even consider going there is beyond me. I am yet hopeful that the club outbidding Doncaster for Gillet's services isn't the Skates, and he's just using them for a bit of training before he signs for someone else. doddisalegend Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 A) Why would any player want to go to that wreck of a club (let alone and ex saints player)? B) How the hell can pompey out do Donny on wages? C) He is a decent enough player that I'd of thought he would have some better offers than pompey. aintforever Posted 16 July, 2012 Share Posted 16 July, 2012 Of course, but he's hardly going to be after as much as Kanu and co? That's pompey's problem though. They are like an alcoholic who thinks 4 or 5 pints a day is not a problem because they used to down 8 or 9. They didn't see the problem with bring in Kitson and co because compared to David James and co their wages were not that high. The reality was they were still paying stupid amounts for a club in their position. I doubt Gillet is on alot but they could get cheaper, with their debt they certainly shouldn't be offering more than Doncaster.
