Asaint4ever Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 (edited) Signs a 1 year extension thoughts? Edited 15 July, 2012 by Asaint4ever
farawaysaint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Oh God, Pandora's box has been opened. I'll have to avoid this site for the next two or three days while people argue about this.
willsasaint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Good news. For me a key part of the squad , pops up with important goals and assists.
ericofarabia Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Get the Mohican Hair back - he looks so much better with it!!
Asaint4ever Posted 15 July, 2012 Author Posted 15 July, 2012 Scored some very important goals for us lets not forget that.
benjii Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 The first team's best attacking move yesterday came about by Guly coming across to the left enabling Lallana and Shaw to overload their right side. He isn't going to pull team apart every week in the top flight but people who don't think he adds anything to our squad are big thickos.
Faz Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 When fit, he gets picked. Tells you all you need to know about Nigel's view on him.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 I'm glad he's signed for the extra year - he's scored some important goals and provides a big presence. My slight problem with him is that I can't really make out where he fits in - probably CAM? - and also that sometimes he looks like he couldn't give a monkeys. Anyway, he's 30 - the club are clearly hedging bets on him not being needed in a years time because we'll possibly need even better players by then. Conversely, go back down to the Champ and Guly will be needed.
positivepete Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 It confirms what we all knew, the manager knows much more about football and how it should be played than the anti Guly brigade on here. Great news.
Delboy Dave Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 I don't like him but Nigel and the Board obviously do, so that's good enough for me. No complaints
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Good stuff. Considering he's played out wide more often than up front, 1 goal every 4 games is a pretty good return.
Mouldy Coat Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 He is much the better player playing in the central midfield role IMO. His link up play and intricate passing rubs off on the rest of the team. As a striker he will be woeful in the Premier. He is also not a wide midfielder with a box of tricks, so naturally drifts inside. Happy for him for a 1 year only, but I would only like to see him play in the middle of a 5 man midfield
niceandfriendly Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Not much else to say apart from that this is good news. Anyone who thinks otherwise is welcome to their opinion, but they're wrong.
doddisalegend Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Good. I like him bit hit and miss at times but on his day fun to watch and effective.
niceandfriendly Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Will be gone in a year. Easily agree actually. can't see us being able to hold onto him once the big boys come calling.
Thedelldays Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 agree actually. Can't see us being able to hold onto him once the big boys come calling. lmfao
S-Clarke Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Don't see the problem with this, he was one of our liveliest players in the first game anyway. He'll do a job next year, whether some like it or not.
Elias Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 He's a versatile player who plays where the manager wants him to play. He's a vital member of the squad.
dune Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Will be gone in a year. Easily Hopefully this extension is simply so that we don't get put in the position of him leaving as a free agent. Some may not like this, but if he plays for us it will mean that we are either ravaged with injuries or the rest of the squad aren't up to it. He's a poor player at championship level so i'm baffled by anyone who thinks he'll be any good in the Premier league.
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Decent player, versatile, has different attributes to some of our other platers, good move despite what a lot of the idiots think
Danish Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Great news! Watched some highlights of Saints Goals over the last two seasons.. and he's almost always there in the build-up or finishing!

dune Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 3/10 for trolling. Must try harder. Like he's such a crowd favourite.
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Highlights nothing but the fact your average fan is clueless tbh
Glasgow_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Like he's such a crowd favourite. The only player i recall being booed when he came on as sub last season!
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Highlights nothing but the fact your average fan is clueless tbh Yup. Read the comments on the officialsaints Facebook status. Embarrassing.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Highlights nothing but the fact your average fan is clueless tbh The classic 'clueless' jibe when youre view is the minority
Danish Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 If the manager had to pick players solely on them being fan favourites, we'd still be in the ****.
MOSaint. Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 not a great fan but he actually looked interested yesterday, and new season clean slate, realy hope he does a job for us, so maybe the extra year will give him a bit more confidence, only time will tell................. COYR!!!!
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 And thankfully that minority view is held by the manager and peoples opinions i actually trust, not so long ago Lallana and Morgan were berated as not being good enough. Most "fans" only see effort and stamina as a sign of a players pedigree and not the intricate part of the game, probably why english football has gone backwards. Still nothing like the bandwagon if you cant form an opinion of your own eh ?
Lighthouse Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Unconvinced but if Nigel rates him that'll do for me. This doesn't however prove any fan who doesn't rate him to be clueless, Strachan really rated Paul Telfer. Guly was inconsistent in the Championship so whether he can step up another level, like a glass coffin, remains to be seen.
dronskisaint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Good news, has what it takes to turn games - will revel in the PL!
doddisalegend Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 And thankfully that minority view is held by the manager and peoples opinions i actually trust, not so long ago Lallana and Morgan were berated as not being good enough. Still nothing like the bandwagon if you cant form an opinion of your own eh ? Wierdly I've never thought he lacked effort ..it seems though that some think that by being disciplined and sticking to the job he has been given by the manager he is a lazy bastard.
Leslie Charteris Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 He is Nigel's version of Jermaine Wright... ...he plays where he's told to and does what the manager asks him to. He won't get any stick from me for doing that.
madruss Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 A versatile, positive attacking player who provides goals and assists. His major weakness is his poor positional play, which as a result means he has to do a lot more running than a more disciplined positional player. Make no mistake, his work-rate is second to none, he tracks back and covers a lot of ground. He's not going to be a first team regular, but gives us an extra option and enables NA to make tactical changes. Like most 'unconventional' players, he divides opinion amongst the saints fans. I don't quite get the "It doesn't matter about his goals and assists and pass completion rates, he's sh*t because he's Guly" argument. I've yet to see an anti-Guly argument with any more substance than that. Glad he's been given a new deal, looking forward to seeing him do his stuff in the Prem.
Turkish Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 And thankfully that minority view is held by the manager and peoples opinions i actually trust, not so long ago Lallana and Morgan were berated as not being good enough. Most "fans" only see effort and stamina as a sign of a players pedigree and not the intricate part of the game, probably why english football has gone backwards. Still nothing like the bandwagon if you cant form an opinion of your own eh ? And pace, down forget pace. Hence the clamour for every new signing to have pace. Hence the hero worship given to Steve De Ridder, despite his end product being woeful on most occasions. Hence the fact Antonio is a footballing god for some fans in these parts. Work rate, effort, pace. These are the only things that matter.
Lighthouse Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Guly ****s all over De Ridder. De Ridder is quicker, has a better first touch, scores more goals from midfield and is better at tracking back (although neither is great in that regard). Neither is perfect but both have their uses. De Ridder changed the game when he came on against Ipswich and Hull last season.
Crazy Diamond Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 I completely agree about the archaic view that if you run a lot to the point of exhaustion and are born and bred in the local area you're a good player. It's complete ********. I'll just say what I've always said. He's inconsistent and can make simple stuff look hard, yet on another day score a brace and look very good. I've seen him look scared of a football and shrug his shoulders, walk off with his head down when a defender marks him tightly, yet score a goal and inspire us to win from a goal down. I think he's a decent player. But apparently I'm not allowed to say that, as statistics show he's the best player we've ever had and to criticise him means that I'm a bad fan, don't know anything about football, am unaware of something called 'link up play' - if anyone would like to explain that, I'm all ears. Oh and I'm a plastic because I went to Crystal Palace away last season, but didn't go to any other away games.
