Nathaniel Clyne - Officially Signed

Because we haven't the time for that, and what's £1m to a PL club?

1. We can sign Clyne now, the tribunal fee is agreed at a later date and isn't negotiated between the clubs. We got our fee for Gobern several months after he went to Udders.

2. With your Cavalier attitutude towards finances, perhaps you should try and buy Pompey.

Because Clyne is better than the likes of Gobern and Dickson.

Tribunal fees aren't based on value, they're based on the cost the parent club put into developing the player. Doesn't matter if it's Gobern, Dickson or whoever the fee is pretty much the same, just over half a million normally. That's what we got for Gobern, Dickson and Best and it's likely what Palace would get if we took them to a tribunal.

Sorting the deal out with the club rather than letting it go to tribunal means you can have more of a say in future clauses. Paying more for him now, may mean paying less back to Palace in the future.

If we're forking out an extar £1m to avoid paying maybe a 20% sell on clause in the future, we must be confident of selling him for well over £5m in a few years.

I hope you're right and that the kid is THAT good.

I think this guy will be an absolutely outstanding addition, for such a snip too. I love what we're doing in terms of young, talented British/european players. It's refreshing and will serve us so well for years to come.

He's quick, skillful and full of energy, he fits the style we like to play superbly. Him and Richardson as our 2 right backs is pretty impressive for next year.

Spot on. Only have to look at the clubs he's been linked with to see how highly he's rated.

More importantly, he also fits our criteria for having a slot in the Championship team of the year :)

That's bullsh*t.

Why would we pay £1.5m when he can leave on a free and they'd get about £0.5m in a tribunal?

Perhaps because we want to maintain good relations with Palace if we're likely to go back for Zaha. It's unlikely they'll be willing to negotiate on a transfer for Zaha if they get screwed over by a tribunal for Clyne.

Oh yeh - we'll have the championship select soon enough!

Our signings seem to be based on a long-period of scouting, as we've been linked to Clyne for 18 month's/2 years now. Same was the case with Jay Rodriguez, and Tadannari Lee - I expect we've looked at Butner for a long time too.

It's just refreshing to see us buying genuinely good players who are better than what we have after a long period of checking them out, not players that just add to the squad and are signed on the back of little work.

Man Utd wanted Clyne not so long ago, that was a very valid interest too, so we've pulled off a good one here if it all goes through.

That's not right. They're also based on existing experience and expected future values - one of the SSN talking heads (not an ex-pro) yesterday said ex-Blackburn Junior Hoilett would be expected to reach £4m in tribunal, so there's clearly a factor for appearances and experience as well as position and the level they're at.

Gobern had barely played 5 matches for us in League One, Best was a striker (which also has a premium as historically they're worth more) and had one Prem match and a few Championship games, but Clyne has significant first team experience at Palace in the Championship over a couple of seasons.

Based on that, £1.5m confirmed rather than subject to arbitration is probably as good as Palace can expect to negotiate.

I say this not too be negative as I'm sure he's really good. But do I remember right that Adkins targeted him as a weak link when we played them last?

But that was more down to the opposing managers tactical ineptness than anything, why put your smallest player and a full back on the back post? Insane.

I'll jump around with joy if this signing comes off, think it'll be an awesome signing of the very highest calibre.

Can't see us wrapping it up so soon though, we usually take 2-3 weeks to get someone signed, just look at the Buttner saga!
