Nathaniel Clyne - Officially Signed

Do you have any idea what the word vendetta means? I don't feel victimised by a football club media strategy.

Then you should watch your language, because you certainly seemed awfully sour about the supposed vendetta against the Echo - for which, as I say, you have no evidence at all regarding the supposed timings.

I am very pleased with this signing, strength and depth is key to us in the coming season, and see this as a great bit of business for us, although I hope when he met our chairman, he realised there will only ever be one NC.

Not sure if anyone suggested it but have got the urge to say this......" Nathaniel Clyne is oh mine, oh mine, Nathaniel Clyne is oh mine"

I shall umm........get my coat.......again.

I wouldn't have said so anymore. The average size of a footballer has gone up considerably in the last 5 or 6 years (like the general population). 6 ft would have been considered tall, whereas it's pretty average now. 5'9" is very much below average.

Nathaniel is 5'9 which compares with Ashley Cole who is 5'9½".

I'm kinda with CB Fry on this.

I don't know why they don't confirm it in a one liner the second the ink is dry and say "...full interview to follow in 2 hours/this afternoon/whatever"

The club do seem to think they can keep things under wraps more than they actually can (especially in the spotlight of the Prem....many more media hungry for any scrap of info and much more willing to pay for it).

I basically approve of the club doing things in a discrete, quiet, methodical fashion. But - blimey - in an era of 24/7 news at least announce "job done" as soon as it has been.

Also, if I remember rightly - wasn't the thing to stuff the Echo a news story entirely in the club's hands - new kit or something? To release that at 11.30pm, when you could do so at noon, just looks petty and vindictive.

If a player really does sign a contract at 11.30pm for some strange reason or other , well, that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

What date and time did Clyne sign his contract?

Because we waited for the photoshoot and interview. That's how.

So, just to clarify, if a player signs a contract at, say, 9.00am and is photographed and interviewed at 9:30am, you'd prefer the club to announce the signing at 9.01am rather than 9:31am?

Just to clarify you have freaking idea how long a photoshoot and and interview take to process.

And I get accused of putting up straw man arguments.

Let me know how long the Clyne interview and photoshoot took and I'll adjust the arbitrary timings in my question. Cheers

Yes. The club are happy to churn out inane tweets about "the media team have arrived in x" or pointless ball by ball tweets from friendly games but can't bring themselves to tweet "delighted to announce x has signed on an x year deal. More soon".

Would be nice is all. But I am not going to spend the day arguing with the Cult of Cortese about it. You win. Everything we ever do is brilliant.

Good way to end a 'debate'. But I'll let you have the last word... ;-)

Firstly, let me say how impressed I am with this signing. Well done Saints.

But it must have surprised the club that this signing and others made recently, have caused such ructions with the most intelligent and influential sector of the fanbase; those who post their opinions on this, the biggest and most important fans' forum.

There are two things wrong with the way that the club operates and they should take note of what is said here, as otherwise they run the risk of the newsworthiness of the signings being overshadowed by the voices of dissent on here that they are not going about it in the right way.

Firstly, they really ought to learn the art of timing of such announcements. This information is freely available from experts in this subject who are regular visitors to this forum. Ignore it at your peril, or face the accusations that you are running a vendetta against the media, or even worse, mistreating the most important element of the club's very being, the paying customers. They insist on being told of such developments immediately the player has put pen to paper, or preferably even before that. Any deviation from that policy will only result in conspiracy theories, causing some to even contradict themselves on the reasoning for the timing of the announcement.

Secondly, whereas this policy of impressing potential new additions to the playing squad with ambitious plans to play in Europe seems to be bearing fruit, you should terminate it forthwith. There are people on here with much greater experience of football support than those who run this club and it is their opinion that Saints can never achieve that goal and that those who believe they can are fantasists. It is therefore useless attempting it and cruel on those players to entice them here with false promises, especially the youngsters like this lad, who are at an impressionable age and still a bit wet behind the ears.

If the club amends their policies in those two areas, they can expect in return that the forum fans' response will be concentrated solely on the efficacy of the signing, rather than the method through which the player was enticed to come here and whether the club had gone about notifying the fans and the media in the correct manner.

I'm assuming you're on a wind up, if not, your ego has blinded you my friend. Who is anyone to say what may or may not happen in the near future. Did Swansea expect to be playing PL football this time five years ago, did BW expect to be on the cusp of winning the tour of France. Things happen, and Saints are trying to make those dreams become a reality.

So I'm hoping your post was in fact a wind up.

Your first and probably instinctive assumption was the correct one. I have no egotistical background that would rate me as an uber-supporter, those who deem themselves qualified by donkey's years of supporting Saints to label others with ambition as fantasists. Like you, I am more inclined to look at the progress we have made from the third division to the Premiership and to use that as a yardstick (see how old I am!) to indicate that it is not entirely impossible that we are the architects of our own future and the level that we eventually reach is in our own hands, as well as being determined by the glory teams who currently dictate who gets to play in Europe.

As signing after signing signals the extent of our ambition, it weakens the case put forward by those who not dare to consider how far we might go on this journey.

PS, Ginge. A word of advice; better not to cite examples of seemingly impossible or unlikely events that became reality, to illustrate a point. They will only be flung in your face by those who would label us as fantasists. I am constantly reminded by these uber-fans of my analogy that they thought it was impossible to climb Everest, although our esteemed manager Nigel seems to have gotten away with his similar analogy that some thought it was impossible to run a mile in under 4 minutes until Roger Bannister did it. But then again, Nigel doesn't post on here. But you run the risk of your analogy being lumped in with mine, or bracketed with those others regarding Chelsea's rise to prominence, etc.

But I'm sure that like me, you'll just ignore the jibes as being infantile.

What makes you think Bolton are gonna win the Tour de France? I didn't even know they'd entered a team.

Great post, Wes :D

I have to say, I find the "we'll never get into Europe thing" a bit of a laugh when people bring it up. Ok, the Passport Office hasn't exactly been swamped with applications for Saints players going to the continent over the years, but we have managed it in the past with less resources at our disposal.

Then you take the likes of Montpellier over in France. They won Ligue 1 for the first time in their history despite spending years bouncing between the divisions.

Sometimes I genuinely get the impression that people assess a team's chances in a rigid, mathematical fashion - like they're assigning each player a score and using the total to determine the quality of the team. That's fine and dandy in Football Manager, but there is so much more to the real game. Successful teams are often a case of alchemy - being better than the sum of its parts. That happens for all kinds of reasons; stability, well-drilled players, decent scouting on the opposition, etc, etc.

The multiple paths to success is one of the most fascinating things about the game. I'd find it a lot less engaging if certain things could NEVER happen ;)

The usual snivelling weasel words from the most pathetically clueless contributor to the forum.

Who, exactly are these people you speak of who think we can never play in Europe?

Start naming names and quoting them.

Or maybe just sh ut the **** up. Because there is no such person. No such people. No such fan. Not on this forum and I doubt anywhere.

So come on weasel. You've had your little grandstand.

Hence why I have had him on ignore for ages, and still I see his 'look at me' post everyday on here, when quoted by others.

Nice try, I'm not getting dragged into it... all I do know is that all this constant off-topicness (myself included) certainly doesn't help.

If people could learn to ignore posters they don't like, life would be so much easier, and this forum much better.

YESS!! Soopoyb!

That's better - back on form - top tantrumming. You'd slumped into some form of quasie 'reasonableness' just lately and I was getting slightly concerned.

I'm printing this out and pinning on the Parish Notice Board.

Verbal's right Bearsy. Pathetically clueless merely suggests puppy dog like yapping aimlessly - pointless but cute. Tedious suggests a dedication to one's craft and subject. However I like you both as posters. Maybe that makes me pathetically clueless and tedious. Yay.
