hypochondriac Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Oh i don't know they can't sign everyone they think is good, i dare say he was on their maybe list. It's not like they're particularly struggling for young right backs. Yeah maybe. He's clearly a good player. Fair comment.
hypochondriac Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Very happy to have beaten Man Utd to the signing of this player. Shows that we are already able to compete with the big boys of this league and are a much better prospect for up and coming British talent. Lol. Hope you are joking.
dubai_phil Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Nice to know, considering Lallana took him to pieces repeatedly. Duh,well of course he did. After all. He makes Messi look Sh1te
Dig Dig Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Lol. Hope you are joking. Why would I be joking? The truth is no laughing matter
hypochondriac Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Why would I be joking? The truth is no laughing matter Don't be silly.
Saint_clark Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 My conditioning from the wilderness years has somehow made me STILL doubt it will go through.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Maybe this played a part in United not coming back for him http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/football/893963-nathaniel-clyne-close-to-penning-shock-manchester-united-deal We all know that Fergie can be stubborn Mmm maybe.... Still surprised we got him if hes very good, cheap(ish), english and young

Winchester Red Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 You have seen Bebe play, right? No, and neither did they before they signed him!

suspect everyone Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Is he automatic first choice? Or is he an understudy to Richardson?
Turkish Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Double deal announcement? Dont like to be negative BUT if he is that good why didnt Man U sign him? 1.5-2.5m is a small gamble for a club like united. I don't disagree with you, Nige is on record saying that we will be challenging for the title soon. I few are signing a player They didn't want that shows to me we are still in a dell sized mentality and signging the rejects of the best. It worries me to be honest.

Turkish Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Me too, I'm so annoyed that we're not even attempting contract talks with Van Persie. Lack of ambition. What did Arsenal win. With Van Persie? We should be aiming higher ImO.'
Dig Dig Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Is he automatic first choice? Or is he an understudy to Richardson? He's not come here to sit on the bench + be behind Richardson in the pecking order.
Saint_clark Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 He's not come here to sit on the bench + be behind Richardson in the pecking order. I think it'll be one of Adkins biggest selection headaches, Richardson will push very hard for a first team spot.
hypochondriac Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 I think it'll be one of Adkins biggest selection headaches, Richardson will push very hard for a first team spot. I disagree. I know you really rate him and he did do well last year but I think it is clear that Clyne will be first choice.
Dig Dig Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 I disagree. I know you really rate him and he did do well last year but I think it is clear that Clyne will be first choice. Exactly. We didn't gazump Man Utd just to stick him on the bench.

sfc4prem Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Look, we just beat United, City, Newcastle etc. to this signing - I highly doubt we'd stick him on the bench.

It is clear I agree, but when rotation becomes necessary (cup games, midweek games or just picking up knocks etc) I think Richardson will put a very strong case across. Don't forget also that none of Adkins signings have really come straight into the team, they've had to earn their place.
Hedgehog Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 How come there is nothing on the official Saints site? Does the reporter for that get sent to bed by his mum at 7pmish? Or is the official site so s+ite that it is 2 days behind the rest?

If fit, Clyne will start against City and it will be up to Richardson to claim his place which will be difficult for him to do considering his limitations.
The Cat Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 He's much better than Richardson. Fantastic signing. You'd imagine we could send Butterfield out on loan now. No need for him to be knocking about Staplewood next season.

If it isnt on the OS then its not done imo.
Saint_clark Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 If fit, Clyne will start against City and it will be up to Richardson to claim his place which will be difficult for him to do considering his limitations. Well, we'll see. I think Richardson is a lot better than people give him credit for.

Chances are everything is agreed and finalised between the two clubs and the player, and Saints are just waiting for final confirmation from the FA before announcing it. If he's on his way to Geneva, he's signed.

Appy Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 I'd imagine Saints will announce it when he is in Geneva and an interview is all done and dusted with Clyne and Adkins.

CanadaSaint Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Well, we'll see. I think Richardson is a lot better than people give him credit for. This year there will be a premium on getting forward quickly and, more to the point, getting back quickly. While Richardson has an older and wiser head, I suspect that he will be shown to be dangerously short on pace - something teams at this level will quickly exploit. What Clyne lacks in wisdom he can largely make up for with speed. IMO this will (hopefully) be a very key signing for us - short term and long term.

No, Jason Dodd and Le Saux were dangerously short of pace last time we were up. Richardson is about average and Clyne is like a whippet on steroids. Both can do a decent job in the Premier League.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Strengthening at both fullback positions is a very astute decision by NA IMHO, although I also think we could be found out a bit at CB too. Dann would be ideal but he's just not worth the £6m release clause unfortunately - he got stitched right up there.
The9 Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 Darren Kenton was FAST, the secret is not getting so far out of position in the first place that Usain Bolt couldn't even help.

stardustonmyfeet Posted 18 July, 2012 Posted 18 July, 2012 I thought at the Easter Monday game at Palace we were focusing our attacks specifically to take advantage of Clyne... obviously Adkins can see his weaknesses, let's hope he can sort them out.

Both can do a decent job in the Premier League. Yeah, but as Dodd only played 5 matches for Saints and none after Redknapp's first game in charge it was hardly a contributing factor to our relegation... He was on loan at Plymouth for the last 2 months, even Darren Kenton couldn't put in a recovery from there.

He didn't look great at St Mary's either. I'm no expert on him but we wouldn't sign anyone who can't pass, and he's got pace, so let's hope he can actually defend!

No big quibble other than the fact that I'd be more inclined to say Richardson has been about average. But the average for everything is about to change, which was my point.

But the average for everything is about to change, which was my point. I vaguely recall a mate saying that he spoke to Richardson before the Liebherr Cup about his squad number and the reply was akin to "I thought it would be 2, but apparently we're signing another right back now". I would say based on last season that Richardson rose to the challenge more than anyone except maybe Lambert based on L1 performance, so it will be interesting to see if he can find another level. This does basically come down to the thing I constantly bang on about in the Prem, which is that you can teach techniques to improve skills and positioning and tactical awareness, and work on strength all you like, but you just can't teach players to be significantly faster. But the average for everything is about to change, which was my point. I meant average in terms of pace. I'm not sure where this idea that everyone in the Prem runs at 100mph coomes from, but if Steffan Henchoz and David Unsworth are 'fast' enough to play in the Prem, I've got no concerns about Richardson. I'd say he was decent back up to Clyne for next season, although I think this is a level above Butters.

Absolutely. One of the things that makes me anxious is the thought of Fox continuing to take opposite side corners in the PL. Under-hit or over-hit them and the ball will be coming back down our vulnerable flank before we can say "sh*t".

I'm sure height is one of them but there's not a great deal he can do about that. Interestingly Buttner is also 5'9'' so if that deal does eventually go ahead, we'll have short arses at full back! Any guess on the time this Clyne deal will be unveiled on the OS? I'm guessing photos will be done tonight, and it'll be posted at 0832 tomorrow morning.

You'll be set upon by the paramilitary wing of the Cult of Cortese for even suggesting that. The way we decide to announce things is absolutely perfect and without fault. And normal. And perfect. And is actually the reason we got promoted twice. Or something.
