Sky Sports (18/07/12) Clyne seals Saints Switch

England Under-21 international Nathaniel Clyne has completed his move to Southampton after penning a four-year deal.

Clyne has moved from Crystal Palace, the club he began his career with, after his contract at Selhurst Park expired.

After lengthy talks the two clubs have now agreed a deal for Clyne - who had already agreed terms with Southampton.

Clyne has now put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal having passed his medical with the club.

Sky Sports (13/07/12) Saints close in on Clyne

Sky Sports sources understand Southampton have been given permission by Crystal Palace to speak to Nathaniel Clyne.

Clyne is out of contract at Selhurst Park but Palace are still entitled to a fee for the 21-year-old defender.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins wants to give the highly-rated full-back an opportunity in the Premier League and is keen to secure a bargain deal for the London-born player.

The England Under 21 international has played more than 100 games for the Eagles since coming through the youth system and had previously been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Palace manager Dougie Freedman is reluctant to lose Clyne but realises the club have no option and the player is determined to leave.

The Mirror (12/07/12) Sign on the Clyne

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is set to sign Crystal Palace's highly-rated right back Nathaniel Clyne today.

Adkins was given permission to speak to out-of-contract Clyne and hopes to agree terms fast and give him a shot at Premier League football.

Clyne is out of contract and has also been chased by Newcastle United, but Alan Pardew is pursuing other targets - leaving Saints in a position to get their man.

Palace want around £3.5 million for Clyne, with Southampton willing to pay less. The two clubs are still negotiating and hope to come to an aggreement.

Clyne has come through the ranks at Palace and also made the England under-21 squad. Boss Dougie Freedman is reluctant to lose him but has no option.

The Daily Mail (12/07/12) Southampton hopeful of wrapping up Clyne's switch from Crystal Palace

Southampton are hopeful of pushing through a move for Crystal Palace right back Nathaniel Clyne, 21.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins is keen to add a right back to his squad ahead of the Premier League kick-off next month. And Clyne fits the Saints transfer mould perfectly – a talented, young, British player who won’t command big wages.

Just had a text back, the clyne deal is definitely a goer, offer on the table to the player, although not all done and dusted between us and Palace Apparantly. no official bid for Zaha, yet.....

Just in case, can we have two new thread's everytime a rumour gets printed in a rag? And make sure it's re-posted in the rumour thread also please. Thanks.

Could we have a thread for complaining about threads rather than have complaints spread across other threads?

Presumably (suspending for a moment my reluctance to believe the accuracy of the whole story) if we can't agree with Palace, we crack on anyway and let a tribunal settle the compensation - which is unlikely to be more than Palace want?

Or we're co-operating with Palace because we're after Zaha also?

Or this is all utter bow locks and he signs elsewhere shortly...

Blah, blah, blah... Does anyone know if he's actually any good though?

In my modest opinion, Clyne is very good. Saw him three times last season. Every time he seemed very assured on the ball, patient bellied by his confidence in possession and always looking for a sensible option to pass. No real "Hollywood" type passes from what I can recall.

Defo sign him up.

Alan Nixon thinks this one could be concluded as early as today.

@reluctantnicko So Clyne is the one for Saints? Likely to be confirmed as soon as tomorrow?

@zoggers87 No reason why not. Official approach made. In talks with player.

@reluctantnicko @zoggers87 so deal could be completed today al?

@hartysaintyboy2 @zoggers87 That's the plan.

Since we seem a step closer to signing Clyne this thread was missing something.

Why is there a bid of £x when he is out of contract? Due to his age I presume, and so instead of going to a tribunal and letting the price be set independently, we're putting in our own bid?

Sounds like a good signing though, hopefully will get sorted.

YouTube makes him look better than he did both times we played palace and more promising for the attacking full back thing Adkins likes.

Hopefully he's cheap enough and turns out to be the best/most realistic rb signing for us

Found this on a palace forum:

Mark‏@AdvertiserSport

Advertiser Sport understands Southampton are holding talks as we speak with Nathaniel Clyne over a potential move to St. Mary's. #cpfc

The general feeling on there is he has already gone and most are hoping Butterfield is involved in the deal.

Of the two, this lad impressed me and Zaha looked like a clueless version of Dyer when we played them at Xmas. Potentially a good signing

From what i have seen of Zaha, he is a real raw talent who should develop into a top player. Anyone who saw his performance in the first 45 of Palace's win against Man Utd in the Carlig Cup would be delighted if we snapped him up.

Would be very happy with Clyne as well

Evening Standard says the deal is expected to be concluded early next week.

Clyne himself can sign when he wants as he is out of contract. Saints and Palace can then either agree a fee (the sensible option) or wait for a ruling to be passed by the FA as he is a young player.

I think this was written before the news broke on SSN that we have been given permission to talk to him. The fact hes out of contract surely means we've agreed a fee rather than going to tribunal and now all he has to do is sign.

What a steal!!

@RichCawleySLP: Southampton granted permission to talk to Nathaniel Clyne. #cpfc

@RichCawleySLP: Been told that fee agreed is in region of £1.5million for Clyne. #cpfc

@RichCawleySLP: #cpfc were hoping for £3m for Clyne but difficult if bids aren't that high. He doesn't want to stay. Tough situation.

That's bullsh*t.

Why would we pay £1.5m when he can leave on a free and they'd get about £0.5m in a tribunal?

Tribunal probably will wack on a massive sell on clause when we could just negotiate a sensible one.

That or we are playing the market of players game properly and not just stealing kids off teams with no regard for the original club (ensuring better future deals). Doubt the tribunal will settle for 500k anyway, seems a harsh undervaluing.
