State of S.t Mary's

Just drove past heading to town from Bitterene, looked by the rail way bridge at the Northam stand & the white panelling and support beams are practically green. I seem to recall that the stadium use to be annually cleaned and maintained pre administration.

Anyone know if the LCD screens and ad boards have been installed yet?

Had a meeting at St Mary's today. The reception area is being ripped out and replaced and the doors are being moved.

The top definitely needs a clean though.

Was the reception really in need of an update then? Last time I saw it I thought it looked ok.

Could be problematico for our annual end of season pitch invasion to celebrate our qualification for The Champions League as we finish Runners Up for the 3rd season in a row!!

We are Southampton, we'll jump (over) what we want...

that green stuff looks nice. Is it a carpet or really only grass?

Actually the real grass (on the right) looks in decent nick considering it was ripped up later than ideally and with the weather we've had since. I hate those advertising hoardings, specially on telly. I hope we will be installing something a bit more classy than Recaros, maybe NC will get a job lot of Ferrari or Maserati (I hesitate to add Alfa) seats from his mates in Eetaly.

Carpet off the pitch, grass on it. I'm hoping we don't follow Chelsea's lead and put the carpet too close to the goal line, they have players falling over all the time and the ridge in the goal is almost certainly a factor in goal line clearances.

The extension of the home bench means my ST comps seats from last season have disappeared! It was a great view but the atmosphere was crap. At least it means I don't have to sit next to the miserable old fart from last season that I almost came to blows with on a few occasions! Not sure where the tickets are being moved to for this season yet, but if it is Block 3 as has been mooted then I'll be a happy bunny.

There has been a lot of tarting up of the stadium this close season. I think a lot of people will be impressed.

Put them in the home dugout (heated, of course) and put wooden benches in the away dugout.

My youngest daughter went on a school trip to Everton FC. The bloke who showed them around gleefully pointed out the massive differences between home and away dressing rooms. The home dressing room is sound-proofed, for example. The away dressing room is deliberately not; he reckoned it intimidates the away players.

The Dell's away dressing room used to be infamous. Numerous footballers have come out and said it was one of the worst dressing room's they used to use. The way it should be...

Can see it both ways. You could argue that being treated to good hospitality and a really nice dressing room at away matches would make you less geed up to beat your hosts. Comfortable and relaxed leads to less edge to your game - ****ed off and annoyed with the opposition leads to more.

Quite agree, especially if it's common practice.

What was so bad about the Dell from an away player's perspective? I quite enjoy a good tale of psychological warfare ( didn't the US use AC/DC and Metallica to wear down Noriega? ) :D

Well, if you take Goodison and The Dell as examples - neither was a happy hunting ground for visiting teams.

Cold, damp, dark and small seemed to be the most common complaints.

Havent there been various examples of people disrupting the oppositions hotel stay the night before the game to make sure they got little sleep and were unsettled? - setting off fire alarms at night etc. Or are they just urban myths.

I see the bench has been extended as well, maybe one day we'll have Recaro seats and be truly Premier League :)

Yes, hopefully but I sit up above there, my seat price has been doubled, they now call it "Premium" seating and "Corporate" yet it's still the same old cheap plastic f**king tip ups. What a load of bull**** gets spouted around there these days! Don't hold your breath.

Cheap fix = Southampton FC, always was, always will be!

Come off it, most of these blokes stay up 'til 5am sh*gging all the local groupies. They wouldn't hear anything outside their rooms, too much noise.

It happened to someone when the FA Cup final was played in Cardiff. Either happened to Liverpool or Liverpool fans did it to someone. Was on SSN at the time, I believe.

In Ukraine during the Euros, the French team were staying in a hotel (in Donetsk) right opposite a 24hr bar we used to frequent until 9am or so. The day of the game we came bowling out of there, completely hammered with the intentions of going in there and setting off the fire alarms. For some reason, the hotel security and police on the door didn't believe we were staying in the £300 a night hotel and refused us entry. Shame, we could've been famous...

I'm surprised seat prices aren't split so that the first 10 rows are cheaper. I hate sitting in the first 10 rows, it's too low.

In terms of quality view, it doesn't really matter where you are in the ground as long as you're a reasonable way up.

The year we were relegated when Man Utd beat us - there was a hugh banner on the roundabout oustide the De Vere where they were staying stating that fact and to beep your horn. I have no idea who put it there :) (honest guv)

But all I know is that every Taxi that went past beeped thier horn as well as others until the early hours - especially with Lesiure World and the Casino being up to 2 /4 am.

Not that it did any good :(

The new advertising boards, they currently stop just behind the goals, and only go around the itchen stand. ( opposite the camera gantry )

Will they carry on around the pitch? Apparently fulham have it half way round?

A number of clubs don't bother having them where the main broadcast cameras can't see them. With the TV camera gantry in the Kingsland Stand, they don't really need the electronic advertising boards for that stand.

I believe they used AC/DC in Somalia (the incident that spurred Black Hawk Down) where they played the downed pilot's favourite AC/DC tracks as they flew around the city in helicopters, eventually they spotted him waving a sheet out of a window in response and sent a snatch squad in to rescue him, and yes they did play something night & day when Noriega was holed up - but I can't remember what.

I think some of the stories of the away dressing room at the Dell were along the lines of the heating being up full blast in the summer, and 'broken' during the winter. Seem to recall one tale of a pipe bursting above the away dressing room causing all the away teams kit to be soaked.
