Your worst away day from our time in the wilderness

there are so many horrific showings. Losing is one thing, but total no shows with players showing no desire is another thing completely, add a few horrific car journeys, tunring up late and not seeing half the action through fog and you've got some football away day nightmares.

Already mentioned, Huddersfield away first time round is as bad as I've seen us. Ricky goal apart we were an embarrassment. Wycombe away and Colchester in said fog were slow deaths, but for total and utter fuming because of how **** we were, nothing compares to the 2-0 defeat at Bristol City in 2009. Terrible. When the only guy to come out of it with any credit was Wotton, and only because he tried to decapitate the opposition on two occasions. That says it all.

The 5-1 drubbing at Preston and 4-1 at Coventry still stick in my mind, shiver...but equally pathetic was the showing in the 1-0 defeat at QPR, when Quashie could be seen standing around on the half way line with hands on hips as they went up the other end and scored. This revealed quite clearly that he could not give a toss as he was off a few days later. Shameful display, specifically by him, fuming. On reflection I can understand why he didn't want to get hurt, but now I know why unsettled players shouldn't be allowed to play. Oh and the Watford defeat, 3-0, on Boxing day was painful too.

I can hardly type Swindon, Rotherham or Bristol Rovers away...aaaaghh

Having been to both as well, I think we were miles worse at Swansea where we barely got a kick against a side that didn't even get near being promoted (but obviously liked the possession and built on it to become what they are now), than away to Huddersfield where we just got quite outplayed. For me Huddersfield was already being saved by signs of improvement (Lambert header, a few new signings). Also, my surrounding day was way better in Huddersfield than in Swansea, so it wasn't always the on-pitch stuff that ruined a day. Just as well given that we're back in the Prem.

Was that Watford defeat the first match under Burley when Niemi was mysteriously absent and then left a few days later? Or one of the myriad other Watford defeats?

yep, Paul Smith in nets with Niemi on bench. So many bad defeats to them. None worse than that home missed penalties circus.

The Lambert header in the Hudds game did suggest possible brighter things, but that can be countered by bringing on Jake Thomson and him being as effective as he had been in all previous games. The way Robinson embarrassed Perry (never ever rated him and on of the reasons we were so **** in my humble opinion) and made Lancashire look like a kid made me fear for our survival, never mind promotion.

Sure, there were some bad defeats, but the OP implies we had a bad time generally. I, for one, would like to put on record that I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the away games. Even the rubbish defeat at Gillingham and the loss to Tranmere. There is nothing that I would rather have been doing.

The worst Watford game I saw was the 3-0 defeat at St Mary's under Burley. That was the angriest I've ever been at a football game. It was complete managerial ridiculousness, retardedness if that's even a word. Appartently playing Euell at LM and Jermaine Wright at LB was better than playing Vignal and Skacel. It really was a case of shoving Wright in the team at absolutely ANY cost. JW must have had photos of Whisky George knobbling Leon Crouch's missus or something. We went 3-0 down with about half an hour left and Burley just sat there like a lemon, then in the 88th minute he decides to stick Hammill on to rescue the game for us. Appaling.

Was that the one with the empty seats being banged by people in the Northam? Pretty sure it's the only match I've ever left early too, a mate decided to antagonise the stewards to get chucked out and we all left with him... any excuse at the time!

I forgot Bristol Rovers FA cup 5th round.

Watched the game in a pub in Dubai. Loads of liverpool fans taking the p!ss till 2 hours later they were crying in their beers as ex Saint Howard scored for Barnsley with just about the last kick of the game to beat them at Anfield.

Great result for me as I won some free drinks in a predict the score competition. That may well also have been the day where later on we met John Burridge doing Karaoke later on. For our match, only time I've not cheered a SRL goal!! ..... which takes to my worst match ....1st away game in L1 at Huddersfield.

We were absolutely atrocious. As mentioned earlier, we were thrashed 3-1 but could have been twice as many, no atmosphere and SRL getting abuse for choosing us over them, supposedly just because we would pay him more rather than the fact he realised we were going places and hopped on the bus!! Only silver lining that day, besides all the beer was seeing SRL score a thumping header to ope his incredible account with us!!

I was sat in the Itchen North. I remember most of the ground singing, "you don't know what you're doing" when Burley put Hammill on.

The 2-0 loss up at Rochdale in our L1 promotion season was pretty gutting. Just the inability of our players to break down a poor opposition after going that distance.

Also the Birmingham game this year was pretty grim. Horrible weather, no protection from the wind, Fox sent off for no reason and it was on tele so could have sat at home with a beer instead. Also the trip back took far too long for the distance.

As awful as this list is, if Pompey fans wrote this thread in seven years time, can you imagine what it would look like!? 'Oh that 7-1 defeat at Crawley was the worst, 'No way, the 6-0 defeat at home to Exeter was worse'. 'Losing those two goals in the last minute at Tamworth was gutting'. 'The worst of all was missing that penalty at Eastleigh and all the scummers gloating'...

I draw Sir's attention to previous correspondance.

2nd game of 2009/10 lost 3-1 to Huddersfield. Grzegorz Rasiak played his last game for the club and looked completely uninterested. On the plus side, got to see Rickie score his first Saints goal.

Pedant Alert!! He scored on his debut v. Northampton in the Coke Cup, 4 days earlier.

I didn't go, but what about Stockport under Pardew. Probably the worst team Saints have EVER played in a league fixture and they got an injury time penalty to draw 1-1. Think that left us about 12 points from safety and without a win in half a dosen league games. When I saw that result I honnestly thought we could end up in League 2.

After we'd been relegated from the Championship and knew we'd have the -10 points, I was waiting for us to hit rock bottom. You could argue that we hit rock bottom the day before Markus and Nicola came on board, as we knew it'd be uphill from then, but having to conquer that -10 was still mind boggling. The Stockport result perhaps was rock bottom, and from then on it's been constantly uphill. (My guess is until we get walloped on the opening day vs Man City, but I'll keep an open mind.)

Wycombe away, Tuesday night, 0-0. Worst game of football I've ever seen, then after the match, after queueing for ages to get on one of the buses out, just as it pulled away I realised I'd left my bag under my seat at the ground with my keys, wallet and phone in it.

Arrived slightly late by car and after driving around ended up parking about a mile away.

Eventually got to the ground about 7 minutes before half time.

Crap game so, luckily, I didn't miss much.

The pitch looked like the Somme and we were unable to break down the opposition.

It fact they could have won with a lucky break.

Can't believe I forgot about this, my worst away game ever:

Crewe Alexandra 1-1 Southampton. 2006? 2007? Can't remember much about the game apart from it was dire, and Peter Madsen played. I remember that we bought tickets intending to get the train, but it would've cost a fortune, so I booked the national express from Southampton to Stoke-on-Trent. Problem was, I was out on the p*ss Friday night and it was leaving Southampton at 5am, so I went straight there from a night out.

Spent the 8 hour journey via London on the verge of throwing up, then negotiate a train from Stoke to Crewe, had time for 2 pints and a sh*t game of football, before the return journey to Southampton, getting us back at 2am. Never again.

For me rock bottom was the Swindon away match, we improved after that even before we won a match against Yeovil.

Swindon away was probably my worst moment as a saints fan, i've never seen such an abject and embarrassing performance in my life. A gutless spiritless team, torn a new one by an ok Swindon side. A total embarrassment of a game and i seriously thought we were in for a tough, tough season.

Pompey away for the bubble was another low, but that's mainly cause the police fu.cked up what is normally one of the best away games you can possibly do.

QPR away in 2008. We lost 3-1 (if my memory is correct). Lloyd James was sent off and despite a McGolddust goal we were never really in it. We looked a very average team, with some young players who didn't seem up for it.

Colchester away - December 2009. it took ages to get there, it took even longer to get out and get home! Lost 2-1 and they home fans were a pain........... Again we didn't quite look like a team that was going to get out of Lge 1.

However - as I think about Forest away, Peteborough away this season the memories of these games wipe away the pain .........................

reminds me of the trip to Colchester in their new stadium. Got stuck in a huge traffic jam on M25, missed the junction, arrived just before half time, saw little of the second half because of the fog - other than Saints playing ****, then it took hours to get out of the car park. Cost me an arm and leg in fuel as I spent most of the drive at a stand still or doing 100 trying to make up time. Still at least I didn't have to wprry about their being no pubs within 100 miles of the ground.

Why do you guys keep on being so negative?.. Is that what we've learnt from being through hell and back? That we have to dwell on it as much as possible and compare the worst days for being a Saints fan.. I honestly think this is a fresh start for us. Everything seems to be in place for a a long and successful stay in the Prem! UTS.. Remember, the future's bright.. It's red and white.. COYR

Agreed. I think that once Marcus completed his takeover things were on the way up and despite the slow turnaround and few blips along the way we all had hope that we'd bottomed-out and things were only going to get better. It was the period before that (the failure to bounce straight back under Red****p, the play-off defeat, narrowly avoiding relegation and then finally being relegated) that included all our darkest moments.

Being beaten by Luton at Kenilworth Rd in 05 was a rude shock, the total upheaval of the Watford (a) Boxing Day game, being totally outplayed by Colchester at Layer Rd in 06 was horrible and put me back on the ciggies again, losing the P/O semi knowing that we needed to go up or face financial strife and real football struggle (the confirmation of that in the 4-1 ****ting by Palace on the opening day of the following season was depressing) and then the relegation season which, helpfully, I don't remember anything of - I think that's a sub-conscious coping mechanism kicking in...

Didn't get to many away games. But Luton away in 05/06, think it was 2nd or 3rd game of season. We lost and made me realise it could be a very long time before we got back to the Prem

This one for me too. That was the match when it really sunk in for me.
