Paulo Gazzaniga - Officially Signed

To be honest I dont think we will be able to trick them into taking Tommy as part of any potential deal. If they have seen him play then we don't stand a chance of shifting him.

Well Lowe bought him in spite of the goalkeeping scout already knowing of his "abilities" and recommending against him.

Gillingham. HTH. ;) :)

(I believe the OP has previously said he will protect his sources)

If he has already signed his contract, then I wonder how long the club will take to officially annouce this signing? Are they going to make us wait again, so they can stagger the good news?

That isn't saying much. Knowing how good he is may give a clue as to whether we sign him for the future or put him up against Davis right away.

I'd like to think that whoever we sign will do so with the intention of competing for the number 1 from day one. I honestly don't Know much about this lad but the club must be confident that he's good enough to do that. No point releasing Bart only to sign a Bart mark ll.

Yes but it would be interesting to see if we sign one keeper or two.

How does this guy match up to Butland? Sounds like a number 2 as opposed to challenging for 1 spot

Pretty similar to be honest. Both played in the same league last year, both played similar amount of games and both were rated really highly.

Butland has been propelled to a mega keeper because he's English, was involved with the Euro squad and is involved in the Olympic squad. Based on last season's showing, they were both excellent keepers performing at the same level.

+ this guy will cost a hell of a lot less. (hey, we may even sign both yet - who knows!)

Worth a read about him and Butland.

Says it all really. His call up was more forced with injuries than anything, I don't think there's a great deal of difference between them if I'm honest.

Both young, obviously talented...would be delighted with either based on what I've read. Got a feeling a few people would see this as a 'cheap' 'underwhelming' option though, when infact it isn't.

Maybe they're waiting for him to get out to France for press shots and interviews etc like the Clyne deal?

And K Billy, does your 'transfer imp ITK' know when it'll be made official?

Myself and K Billy have the same source, so there will be a similar level of ambiguity, unless it leaks to lots of peeps!

I'd never heard of him until the other day but on the face of it sounds like a very good young keeper and exactly what we are

Looking for. Someone possibly good enough to challenge Davis now and eventually be his long term Successor.

I think if we sign Gazzaniga then we may be content with keeping Forecast as 3rd choice until his contract runs out (next summer) and then pursuing Butland this time next year. If Kelvin or Paulo get injured then there's always the possibility of bringing in an emergency loan.

Or maybe we're still looking to sign a more senior keeper and Gazzaniga will be 3rd choice? Craig Gordon on a free to battle it out with SKD for the No. 1 spot?

By all accounts the lad seems to be hugely ambitious and sees himself as a premier league player. For that reason I can't see him coming here as third choice. He'llbe here to be number one.

Good read about Gazza here when he was linked with Sunderland in January:

http://www.not606.com/content.php/1779-Sunderland-and-Paulo-Gazzaniga

I agree, Flitney was generally a reliable keeper but he was also all we had, especially in comparison to the previous Julian. Initially if I remember correctly Flitney struggled with his kicking in the same way that Julian did and at the time I just thought here we go again. However, he generally became good, despite me clearly stating on the arrival of Paulo Gazzaniga that I wanted to see him in goal. Do not ask me why but you just get a feeling for a player, probably because he was young, full of energy, held himself tall, the Argentine had come a very long way much more than most to ply his trade, appeared respectful, hence right mentality, it just felt right with this keeper before seeing his actual ability, to which he was to go on and actually prove to have something special. Flitney though appeared to grow on people, including me but I never held him in the same esteem. In truth comparing the two, I am struggling to remember Flitney's good points.

Gazza was not to disappoint when he got his chance through Flitney’s injury, his kicking was absolutely immense and accurate. I hate the long ball game, I would prefer to see it played on the turf but against all my beliefs, I felt Gazza and Tomlin had a connection. People have talked about what if with Birchall all season, while all I was doing was rueing Tomlin’s injury. Oh what could have been?

Some of the one handed saves Gazza has made this season have been world class, ok, a bit of an exaggeration maybe but those that travelled to Oxford will know his one right handed save to turn the ball around the post was the sort of save you only dreamed of Banks making against Pele.

Sorry back down to earth, maybe I am too much of a traditionalist and I have been left behind in the modern game.

Just trawling some Gills' boards for anything new. Nothing particularly new, but Patred is certainly doing his best to get a response from them:

From Southampton

on the local news down here (BBC RADIO SOLENT) is that your young Argentine keeper has signed for us.

4 year contract... £2.5m

£2.5m seems too high in my book.

On another of their forums though it is suggested he is off to West Ham for £600,000.

Conclusion - their fans know as much or as little as we do.

I TRIED...no one seems to know about this..nor on the usual twitter sites

No news from other goalkeeping coaches I know.. Except a little titter about 10 days ago about us watching his progress a little closer than normal.

As you know nothing gets past us goalkeepers easily:lol::lol:
