Horley CTFC Saint Posted 10 July, 2012 Share Posted 10 July, 2012 The price of steel in 2012 has significantly increased since St Mary's was being built in late 1990's/early 2000's. As have the prices other materials like concrete. There is a lot of concrete and steel needed to make a football stadium and a lot of the overall cost of a stadium will be in these materials. This is why St Leonards FC was the way to go.....and man did they go

djharvey Posted 10 July, 2012 Share Posted 10 July, 2012 FWIW not long after St Mary's was built I was chatting to a commercial director of Mowlem who told me that they had come 2nd in the tender with a bid around £50m, with other bids between the £50-£65m mark. He commented Barr were so desperate to build an EPL club stadium that put in a ridiculous below cost bid to win the work. On that basis we probably got great value for money. Have been reliably informed this is correct. Mowlem were royaly shafted by the club, they were the preferred bidder and spent a fair sum working the design etc but at the last minute the club took all the detailed costings (stupidly supplied by Mowlem) and got Barr to build it at a far better price (quality did suffer a bit though). As you say Mowlem a bit dopey. Saints got a good deal though and that additional money allowed us to purchase Rory Delap.
paulsfc Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 Stadium of light cost the Sunderland owners £10m The rest came from regeneration grants and the like Cracking deal for them then. Never been there so wonder how it compares to SMS in terms of facilities, leg room, views etc.

Thedelldays Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 Cracking deal for them then. Never been there so wonder how it compares to SMS in terms of facilities, leg room, views etc. Never been either but they built down into the ground apparently They were talking about new stadiums on the radio the other day and someone from Sunderland FC was on and said that the stadium of light cost the owners (who are very rich) £10m or so from their own pockets after the sale of rocker park and obtaining bayous grants and regeneration money etc

Unfortunatly this is the way in Construction sometimes - It's called Early Contractor Involvement. I doubt Mowlem were on a design and build though. It's a well known fact that Barr bought the job and didn't do the best of jobs, especially as far as I'm concerned. In this day and age I reckon the cost would be around 66 million still. Although the cost of steel and materials has gone through the roof, labour costs are down are so are margins, with companies cutting each others throats at the moment. I'd still do it for cost, plus a life long season ticket and touching rights to Lucy Pinder. The
This Charming Man Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 Didn't Man Citeh 'inherit' their ground from the council and only had to pay around £20m to convert it from an athletics stadium to a football stadium?
Verbal Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 Didn't Man Citeh 'inherit' their ground from the council and only had to pay around £20m to convert it from an athletics stadium to a football stadium? Yep, it was Manchester City council's investment in the Commonwealth Games. It's been a win-win for the council and the club, because it's an outstanding stadium and it's helped rejuvenate the area around it. (As St Mary's could yet do...)
