Marc Muniesa, a young central defender from Barca.. only played twice for the first team, rated highly....

current Spanish u21 international

Apparently we are attempting to get him on loan for the season

so are WBA, Fulham, and several Spanish clubs

Hmmmm. Carlos Puyol's boot-boy.

Looks good on paper.

But for me CB is a bit of an old man's position. CB and GK are the two positions where I reckon players get better with age up until they retire.

Agree with you on this. We arer a Premier side up against world class players. We should not be blooding rookies from other clubs. The original poster tends to get most things wrong anyway.

i agree if we were only going to take one cb but i would assume two will be coming in based on martin alreadynout on loan and seaborne injured / fairly averge at best

This boy is obviously good but playing in Barcelona's team is a bloody sight different to playing for a mediocre team under development playing with their backs to the wall in big games. Dominant, experienced fit defender needed

 Is it still stood there ? Some enterprising Fulham fan hasnt had a car crash into it or hacked its head off during the night ?

Its inside the ground behind a high steel fence, otherwise somebody would have 'modified' it by now - probably with a drip in its arm and a carrot up the jacksie

Well, I will say one thing for Rupert Lowe. At least he didnt embarrass us with tasteless cheesy tat (unless you count Forecast), like Al-Fayed has done to Fullham.

Our attempt pales into comparison :

As tacky and inappropriate as that Jackson statue is, you won't find many Fulham fans complaining about it. Fayed has sunk more than £200m of his own money into the club, and charges annual interest on the loan of less than 1%.

I seem to recall there was significant complaining when it was unveilled.

So if NC wants to unveil a statue of Dusty Springfield in order to pay tribute to his childhood music crush, are we OK with that too ?

His reply of 'if any fan doesn't like it they can go to hell' probably meant any 'Swing fayed, swing mohammed, swing him from Putney bridge' chants never really got going down at the cottage.

We got a statue removed because it was awful. Many on here just went along with it saying 'it's not that bad, we should keep it' etc. But it was an embarrassment. I can't see us tolerating a pop star statue. It'd get ripped down and/or vandalised pretty quickly. I'm normally against vandalism, but in this case it seems absolutely fine.

I imagine they'll be adding statues of bubbles and Macauley Culkin soon, perhaps one holding each hand.

What will the statue of Jordi Chandler be holding ?

Again, why would this signing stop us signing a dominant experienced CB? We have 2 plus Seaborne who wasn't very good and hasn't played in a long, long time. Can't see any way we'd have loaned out Martin if we weren't signing 2 CBs.

Even two. No players at centre back that aren't able to cope with the sort of pressure we will have to combat next season.

Loaning Martin for me means its likely were only getting someone in on a short term deal weather its a 34/35 year old experienced CB or a top class youth CB from a club like barca, i would be happy as i think if Martin can get 30 plus games under him this season and keep up his progression he will be a quality defender, but we do need a bit of pace at the back at the moment its only Fox with a bit of pace, Fonte is ok pace wise but we need a quick RB or CB to help stop the pacey players in the PL.

Are you sure?

Despite the clamour to sign 'pacey' players, how many central defenders can anyone name that are known for their pace?

Not so much rapid quick but someone like King or Campbell in there prime fairly quick and strong.

Rio Ferdiand in his prime was fairly quick. So 3 in the last 10 years, all of them England internationals. I'm afraid those demanding a 'pacey' centre half are going to be in for a disappointment. There aren't many about and those that are will cost a fortune and are already playing for the top clubs.

Don't forget Darren Kenton, he could shift.

I think Weston has got this right, what incentive is there to develop others players. We are fighting hard to retain our own talent that we can sell for a big profit, Why do the same job without even the profit? The only way this would fit into Saints would be if he came with a buy out clause. That would mean Barca don't rate him highly enough and then what are we looking at? I would say centre backs are the position that requires so much time to develop that this makes no sense.

That was nothing to do with Lowe. That was organised by a group of fanontheboarders. A grim warning of what would happen in they ever got involved in the club.

In fairness, you made a link in my post that wasnt intended, though I understand how you could infer that. The first part was drawing an analogy between Al-Fayed and our most publicity-hungry chairman and concluding that there still remained a difference. The second part was simply referring to our own statue-building history, and asserting that our worst attempt doesnt even come close in the cheesy stakes.

this comment still cracks me up.....

Dave Ford, chairman of the Ted Bates Trust, which commissioned the project and shared the cost with the club, said: "Ian has done a tremendous job. It's very rare I'm lost for words but I saw the statue last week and it's awesome - a tremendous tribute to a great man.

"Fans have waited a long time for this and it's fantastic."

Yes, Dave, we were lost for words as well.
