S-Clarke Posted 29 July, 2012 Share Posted 29 July, 2012 Wondering why they bothered, and what all that f**king arguing was about. Drawing with UAE - what an achievement. Peaked too early, again.
Minty Posted 29 July, 2012 Share Posted 29 July, 2012 Never let the possibility of a different result get in the way of a moan about the current score S-Clarke. You've been here long enough to know that by now.
Saint_clark Posted 29 July, 2012 Share Posted 29 July, 2012 Are the beeb showing every Team GB match? Personally, I'm sick of international footy after the woeful Euros. They're showing every second of every event, if you don't want to watch the football press the red button, change the channel or turn the TV off and go play outside in the sunshine. Final result aside, by your logic there are plenty of countries who shouldn't bother entering any events as they never actually get anywhere? Personally I think the idea of representing your nation in the Olympics would be the absolute pinnacle of athletic sport (although obvious not the likes of football). I'm not quite sure either that I understand this urgent need to express indifference towards Team GB's football team - it seems to be a trend on most footy sites... Why is it so important to tell everyone else that this team is unimportant?

Why is it so important to tell everyone else that this team is unimportant? Because it goes against the essence of international football. Regardless of other sports, we have a deep passion for football and international football started when the home nations decided to play each othe Also, FIFA would love to do away with the IFA and reduce the voting from these isles from 4 to just 1 I doubt we will form another GB footy team again. For a very long time anyway Football, like tennis and basketball have no place in the Olympics IMO What next Twenty20 cricket? I hear golf is coming soon? pap Posted 30 July, 2012 Share Posted 30 July, 2012 I love having football in the Olympics. Watched the highlights of the Team GB game yesterday. Sturridge's chip was a beauty. It might not be perfect technically, but I've found it very refreshing to see Team GB in action. As many have pointed out, it's unlikely we'll have something similar again - so it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for these lads. They seem to realise it too. doddisalegend Posted 30 July, 2012 Share Posted 30 July, 2012 I think football should be in the olympics and we should have a team GB....However I think all the olympic teams should be from the respective countries non-league sides..making it an amatuer event (though I know lots of UK non-league players at the top end are probably bordering on full time professionals these days). Minty Posted 30 July, 2012 Share Posted 30 July, 2012 I don't know, I just wondered why you felt certain sports should and shouldn't be included, and why. I can see merit in the argument that only non-professional sports should be included... the amateur status is after all what the Olympics was founded on, so I do actually agree with you about some of the sports you mentioned... I just wondered what criteria YOU would apply?
DanW Posted 31 July, 2012 Share Posted 31 July, 2012 The IOC has done away with certain sports due to a number of criteria, including but not limited to: 1) Unbalanced competition: read - one nation (or a small handful of nations) destroys everyone else every time...probably because that is the only nation that really cares about the sport. 2) The lack of the best players in the world participating: example - in baseball, players in the MLB are unable to participate in the Olympics so eventually the Olympics did away with baseball. 3) Okay, I don't know this one for sure...but I imagine that no one cared about Tug-of-War, and hence they got rid of it. So reason being "no one cares."

I'd agree, but that is far too sensible and in keeping with the Olympic spirit to happen as it does not have the media/box office attraction ££££

At the 1948 Olympics there were medals for Architecture ( Architectural Design and Town Planning ), Literature ( Lyric Works and Epic Works ), Music ( Vocal, Instrumental, and Orchestral ), Painting and Graphic Art ( Oils, Engravings, and Applied Arts ), and Sculpture ( Statues, Reliefs, and Plaques ). GB won 1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze.
