This Charming Man Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Saints fans take less to northern games Wow, would never have imagined why Sunderland travel in numbers down here and WHU travel in numbers up North. The9 Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Around 2/5 of our games will be on TV this year (and many more of them streamed on the internet) so by that rationale quite a few people are going to get put off by going quite often. Yeah but we also have a 7 year build up of the new ground factor for our younger fans...

oldsarum Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Sunderland travel in numbers down here and WHU travel in numbers up North. Distance doesn't seem to bother them. Sunderland and several other clubs from up North bring loads here because so many of their fans have either moved down to London or home counties for work West Ham do travel well up North, but they have a big advantage with road and rail links from London By train you can be In Manchester and Liverpool in just over 2 hours from London and Newcastle in 2 and a half hours, from here you talking more like 4 to 5 hrs to Manchester by train for example it makes a big difference. This Charming Man Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 So with which teams are you comparing Saints away support with to say it is "poor"? Percentage wise, in relation to home support, Bournemouth's away support is better than ours.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Our away followings have been superb the last few years...but we have been going to every game expecting to win, and they've not been particularly expensive. You also have the feeling that people have fallen back in love with the club again after the mess with Lowe et al. I'm sure after we start struggling the numbers will drop, especially if we're being charged £50 odd to go to games !
Matthew Le God Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Percentage wise, in relation to home support, Bournemouth's away support is better than ours. But in actual numbers it is far smaller, so why does % in relation to home gates matter? Saints have often been restricted by away allocations, had it been unlimited the % compared to home gates would be higher.
This Charming Man Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 But in actual numbers it is far smaller, so why does % compared to home gates matter? It's all relevant. If we can get 30k to turn up but can only muster 1,500 for a Northern away game, that's poor. Bournemouth get 6,000 but take 700 away, that's pretty decent and proves my theory correct that our fans only like nice local trips.
Sour Mash Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 So with which teams are you comparing Saints away support with to say it is "poor"? We didn't even come close to selling out at Boro end of last season. That sums it up.

The9 Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Percentage wise, in relation to home support, Bournemouth's away support is better than ours. Yeah, but that's mainly because the proportion of people who go to aways is higher the lower down the leagues you go - because apart from not having limited allocations as often, the kind of people who will watch L1/L2/Conf football regularly are also the same kind of people who will go to pointless dumps of away grounds too. Tbf the kind of fan that travels away regularly is probably your die-hard that would still be there no matter how bad the team was. If, as you say, Bournemouth take away 700 (and that's probably one of their bigger away followings, while 1,500 for us isn't) while their average home gate is 6k, well if that suddenly dropped of to a more regular 4k then those 700 would probably still remain a constant both home and away. Regular away followings don't come and go as dramatically as home attendances when things get tough.

Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Well. Coventry was decent and we could have had as many as we wanted there. Brum would have probably been better if the weather wasnt so bad and it was on sky. It's improved in the last few years, but I do agree there is still a lot of room for improvement. Still think they'll be issues getting tickets though....contemplating getting a ST and just losing out on money or sharing with someone else. Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Well I know of some people who had tickets but didnt bother going as they assumed it would have been called off. Lets be honest, it should have been and it would have been a wasted trip if it had been called off. I've never been so cold at a football match, and struggled to get back to my mates who lived a 5 min bus ride from the ground. I dont blame people for not coming from Southampton for that one. Not everyones lives run around football. Sure people saw the weather and thought miss that one. Prob not an extra 1000, but prob another 500. Still werent bad attendance from what I remember. When did away tickets ever go on sale 3 weeks before a game anyway? I normally bought mine on the gate or a few days before.

Fans of different clubs arent different sub-species. There is only one PL club with 1.5 hours travel of Southampton. If you are in the North, Midlands or London its probably 7 or 8.
