Spudders Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 Going to be working in Brussels during the week for the next couple of months. My understanding is that it's one of the most boring places on earth, & asking about hasn't really changed that. So far I've heard it's good for beers, waffles & chocolate & that it's got a seedy nightlife. I've also heard it's full of peados (not sure if this is connected to the seedy nightlife! ). Any of you been there? What's it like?
miserableoldgit Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 We went for a long week-end there 5 or 6 years ago and we enjoyed it. Grand Place is very nice. I have an interest in History and there is an enormous museum which is well worth a visit. We also went to the Battlefield at Waterloo, just outside Brussels, which again is worth visiting. But my guess is that this isn`t what you want!

Chez Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 Grand Place is worth a look at night, but you'll certainly be disappointed with the Manneken Pis.
Fowllyd Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 If you like the Art Nouveau style, visit the Horta museum (basically Horta's own house, preserved for posterity). There's plenty of good places to eat in and around Grand Place - try a waterzoooi (I think that's how it's spelt).
Spudders Posted 7 July, 2012 Author Posted 7 July, 2012 Go to the pub with over 2000 beers! Now we're talking
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 Now we're talking I would check the sell by dates. Drink some Leffe. It may be owned by one of the global players but it is very nice.
Spudders Posted 7 July, 2012 Author Posted 7 July, 2012 But they sell Leffe on offer in Lidl. Surely if there are 2000 beers in a bar, there must be better choices than that!
Crazy Diamond Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 Well the horses apparently have to wear nappies, that's fairly interesting.
moonraker Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 If you like a good steak to Vincent's Restaurant http://www.restaurantvincent.com/
Crazy Diamond Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012  WTF!!!! True story. I also hear they're obsessed with chips. Belgium was actually founded by a group of people from Winchester - it's an entirely artificial country.
belgrave Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 Grand place is nice. Centre has god bars & history. Ok for a week or two. Pricey.

Whitey Grandad Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 I have spent a couple of short stops there courtesy of the European Broadcasting Union. There's also the Atomium and the Comic Strip Museum: http://www.comicscenter.net/en/home Rue de Bouchers has some restaurants.
Lighthouse Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 (edited) You could huddle under a 50 euro brolly in the p*ssing rain for 3 days drinking Jupiler and eating waffles. Edited 8 July, 2012 by Lighthouse
saint_in_munich Posted 7 July, 2012 Posted 7 July, 2012 Belgium has some fantastic trappist beers, westmuller double and triple is good and if you can get hold of west vleteren its well worth a try ( my spellings are probably bad). They like their fries with mayo but they also do a meat sauce for them which is excellent. There is a lot of weird people on Belgium.
JPTCount Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 spent a night there there a few months ago, very pretty. smells of waffles, and yes delirium has 2000 plus beers, my missus had a chocolate beer, foul!
Brussels Saint Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 Brussels is fairly crap outside of the main downtown sites already mentioned if you visit as a tourist and don't know where to look. Delve a little deeper however and you can find a truely energetic, modern metropolis with just about anything and everything you need. What do like doing, I'll point you in the right direction.
Brussels Saint Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 (edited) ...... Edited 8 July, 2012 by Brussels Saint Double post. Fecking iPad
Whitey Grandad Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 True story. I also hear they're obsessed with chips. Belgium was actually founded by a group of people from Winchester - it's an entirely artificial country. French fries are said to have been invented in Belgium, a much underrated country in my view.
vindaloo73 Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 http://adventuresinpubs.co.uk/pubs/delirium-cafe-brussels/[/url] At the last count there were 2500 beers, I only have 2435 more beers to go! Go to Celtica Pub near Grand Place, all beers €2
Chez Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 If you like a good steak to Vincent's Restaurant http://www.restaurantvincent.com/ would be my recommendation too, best fish restaurant in town. Pricey, but top notch.
miserableoldgit Posted 8 July, 2012 Posted 8 July, 2012 French fries are said to have been invented in Belgium, a much underrated country in my view. I agree. I have been there a few times and have always enjoyed my time there. Really doesn`t deserve the stereotypical image that most people have of it.
