Pilchards Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 Billy Sharp - club penalty taker Jay Rod - club penalty taker Steven Davis - club penalty taker Buttner - club penalty taker With Rickie Lambert we certainly are ready for the champions league penalty shootouts :-) PS I bet Forecast will make them look even better during training. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 (edited) Well penalties are generally taken by confident footballers (England players with the first name 'Ashley' excepted) and although the newcomers will have trouble taking penalty kick duty away from Sir Rickie, having players who we know can keep their heads under pressure must be a good thing looking at the scale of the task ahead of us. In a similar vain I wonder if our latest signing will benefit from being at Rangers and automatically winning so very much Scottish silverware as a result. Does being constantly told in effect that you're one of the best players around give you such a ego boost that you become a better more self assured player than you might otherwise be, or are the best cakes only baked at the higher temperatures if you know what I mean ? Well we are about to find out I suppose. Edited 7 July, 2012 by CHAPEL END CHARLIE typo
david in sweden Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 You're right Pilchards, ..this is more of an issue than many people think...and one of the reasons that England have failed in shoot-outs in major comps. Almost every club has its regular penalty-taker... and others (who get selected for international duty) never get a chance against top level keepers and we see the end result, it ends up with players with no such experience drawing the short straw...( in Saints' case it was Leon Best v. Derby in the play-off SF - wasn't it ?)

david in sweden Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 After his effort at Blackpool I wouldn't want Sharp taking anymore!!! Maybe a little hard judgment, I watched that game and the pitch was a mess before the start.....and even MLT missed one .
S-Clarke Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 Maybe a little hard judgment, I watched that game and the pitch was a mess before the start.....and even MLT missed one . TBH they scored their penalty 5mins later, on the same pitch. He looked nervous as hell before he struck that, but that's not saying he'll miss when he next takes one - it's just that his first didn't inspire any confidence! Saint J 77 Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 Maybe a little hard judgment, I watched that game and the pitch was a mess before the start.....and even MLT missed one . To be fair he missed a few at Doncaster too. He is not as consistent as Lambert from the spot thats for sure. But as you say to write him off totally as a penalty taker just because of that one miss, would be a little harsh!

I think that taking a penalty must have been the last thing on his mind before it happened. He'd obviously got used to playing "second-fiddle" in our front line, and saw Rickie score two penalties in a game just a fortnight before.... .....wasn't there some " incident " just before that ......a goal disallowed, or hit the post or something? Such things can upset a player's concentration. Howvere, I agree .....he just wasn't up to it on the day.
