Golden Balls Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 I also grew up watching that man, and really took it for granted. Plenty of memories there. There is the obvious last goal at The Dell. But one moment that I remember so well was his goal against Newcastle (no not that one...or that one) in the last minute. We were 2-0 with about 6 minutes to go. I think Maddison scored and then Matt smashed the ball past Hislop (who had a blinder that day) from 20 yards. It was such a cold day but I was roasting after those celebrations. Winnersaint Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 Thanks for that-so many great memories. Didn't get many with his head though!! Indeed. if we were about to sign him as an unknown and had that on youtube we'd be absolutely creaming ourselves. No-one who saw him play will ever forget that genius. My boss is a Spurs fan. He's going to watch this on Monday. 6 caps for England sums up all that is wrong about us as an International football nation. On that form he'd get in the current Spain side. GAS Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 Brilliant stuff. Ignored by 3 England managers, easy to see why England are so bad when the likes of Carlton Palmers was picked over Le God. I think I'm right in saying MLT was Xavi's favourite player, at least the best midfielder in the world recognises a decent player. But it is great to have such a player to talk about and compare to all others in any football conversation.
Ric Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 Every time a new player is linked with us, we get the obligatory YouTube video - and none of them could touch that for the quantity and quality of Matt's goals. We'd be creaming our pants if we were linked with a player and their YouTube video had just a fraction of Matt's goals there... and the wonderful thing is that we had him, for his entire career. It almost defies belief that we were so priviledged to have him play for us for all that time. "Legend" is an over-used word in football, but there are few better deserving of the title than our Matty.

Some goals on there which arent amongst the "usual suspects" in these compilations. I still wonder to this day how the f**k that chip over Schmeichel went in. And for all those pundits who said he couldnt run or battle, there are seriously grafted goals in there. Final comment regarding the recent kit debates; a lot of people have slagged off the Pony tick kits. For me, it will forever be one of my favourite Saints kits, simply for what Matty did whilst wearing it.

toe_punt Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 What an insult that Matt played so little for England, especially when you come off Euro2012 where donkeys like Young, Milner and Welbeck played every game. Those three wouldn't have been fit to carry MLT's jock strap. My B.I.L. said that the reason that Hoddle didn't play MLT was that he (Hoddle) was used to being the skill player in training even when he was manager and that MLT could do everything that Hoddle could and then some. Hoddle didn't like being upstaged, so MLT's international career was dead. I don't know if this is true, but it sounds plausible.

Hoddle said that he organised the 'B' game against Russia so that players on the verge could stake one last claim to get in the full squad. MLT scored a hat-trick and set up the other goal, and still got ignored in favour of David f**king Batty. Hoddle publicly slated Chris Sutton for refusing to play for the B team, but his subsequent snubbing of MLT proved that Sutton was absolutely right when he claimed it was pointless. S-Clarke Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 What I love about those clips, apart from the amazing memories and goals, are the fact that the oppo fans clap after every goal. mikee Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 lots of great goals there but one on my favourites was the one away at Liverpool. rarely do you see the home fans applaud a goal against them but you can see it clearly in the clip as Matty scores at the Kop end. we lost the game but it was worth the trip for that goal alone. It is hard to explain to my sons that Matty was so good that he was virtually every football fans favourite player - regardless of which club they supported. Can you imagine a player achieving that kind of status in the current game?
Elmore Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 Outrageous vid. The technique for the goal that starts at 2:10 – who was that against (Arsenal?) The goal against Norwich at 2:45 – wtf?!!? My favourite (someone once told me when this was scored, but I have forgotton - duh) is at 5:45 – just love the determination - the way that the ball hits him in the face, the keeper saves his first shot, but he still gets it in the net. He looks like a predominantly left-footed player in this clip.

ericofarabia Posted 7 July, 2012 Share Posted 7 July, 2012 Still not seen anyone with such a good shot. Not for accuracy and variety. Too many just opt for power, with Matt you'd never know what was coming, chip, volley, power, curl, angle, pass. I miss watching that. However good the team has been since or gets, it's not the same as having one player so good that a world class goal is possible even in the worst performances. Made sure you stayed hope right until the final whistle even if going badly. Plus, you had that feeling that a goal could come out of nowhere. . A couple of the free kicks near the beginning of the clipare so bizarre. a simple looking chip but the poor keepers seem totally bemused and stay rooted to the spot watching in awe as the ball drops into the back of the net. I was at the coventry match to the left of the goal the goal and because the keeper hadn't moved i assumed there had been an infringement or Matt had taken it before being given the go ahead. Just awesome. Also note how many of his penaltys hit the stanchion at the back of the net or even the side netting. Finally the 1st of The Newcastle pair, the initial flick up from behind himself to start the move hardly ever gets a mention but that is just amazing. Thanks Matt.
