View From The Top Posted 9 July, 2012 Posted 9 July, 2012 Post 16 maths teacher, specialising in engagement in classic "hard to reach" communities. Interesting, varied and incredibly rewarding.
derry Posted 9 July, 2012 Posted 9 July, 2012 Retired Airline Captain. Became a QS after school but got bored and went flying. Great job.
Jack Posted 9 July, 2012 Posted 9 July, 2012 Might have have a new position working on new major new wind farm projects, beats working behind a desk as a PBS, currently working with the best bunch of guys & girls ever and a great boss but the job as a qs is crap and very boring. Where abouts? We were set to head up to North Wales for a windfarm project, but it all went quiet. There's talk of it being back on in Jan 2013. Pain in the arse being on the road all the time but sometimes it's necessary for continued employment.

Was this something you chose to do because of something that happened in your life or is it something that just happened. Only asking cos if/when I make my fortune I fully intend to help disadvantaged kids.
toofarnorth Posted 9 July, 2012 Posted 9 July, 2012 Communications. Not a bad area of work, but i'd rather be in a more interesting field
emerson massey Posted 9 July, 2012 Posted 9 July, 2012 Post Production Sound Engineer. Challenging, time consuming, stressful but ultimately fun!

mightysaints Posted 10 July, 2012 Posted 10 July, 2012 Can't say who the employer is as its all a bit hush hush. But the role is for all of the UK Where abouts? Only asking cos if/when I make my fortune I fully intend to help disadvantaged kids. I've been teaching since '94 & I've always worked in deprived areas out of choice. Since 2005 I've worked in post-16 & I wouldn't consider, despite some quite outstanding offers, going back to compulsory age teaching. Seeing how some people "survive" in quite desperate surroundings certainly makes me value my life, wife & kids even more. I consider it a vocation, not work.

doubleonothing Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Red Jet 3? Quite a bit bigger. But I wouldn't mind doing some work on the jets at some point.
Jillyanne Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Quite a bit bigger. But I wouldn't mind doing some work on the jets at some point. Ok but for one, you don't 'drive' a ship!
Weston Super Saint Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Ok but for one, you don't 'drive' a ship! Errrr, you do if it has an engine and a 'drive' shaft 'driving' the propeller. Whereas you 'sail' a boat without an engine
Jillyanne Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Errrr, you do if it has an engine and a 'drive' shaft 'driving' the propeller. Whereas you 'sail' a boat without an engine Err wrong, he claims to 'drive' a big SHIP, not a boat which would mean diesel electric propulsion so therefore more likely steers as well as satellite GPS navigation systems.
aintforever Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 (edited) Graphic design. It's what I've wanted to do since I was a kid, still love doing it but now I'm fed up with staring at a computer all day. Plus the pay is OK but not great. Problem is I've ploughed a long specialised furrow and can't see how a career change can happen. Edited 15 July, 2012 by aintforever
doubleonothing Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Err wrong, he claims to 'drive' a big SHIP, not a boat which would mean diesel electric propulsion so therefore more likely steers as well as satellite GPS navigation systems. Commonly referred to in the business as doing the driving. The correct term is to conn the ship. Either the autopilot or a helmsman does the steering. Propulsion wise, the main means is Diesel Electric and yes GPS is a part of our navigation systems.

(I worked for Carnival for 10 years looking after the engineering and deck officers so I do know what I am talking about)

Do you ever just lash yourself naked to the wheel and scream hysterically at the sea gods 'c'maaaan give it all you've got'?
doubleonothing Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Then you will know that both Deck and Engineering officers will refer to it as "doing the driving"! But yes, the correct term is "to conn"
doubleonothing Posted 15 July, 2012 Posted 15 July, 2012 Do you ever just lash yourself naked to the wheel and scream hysterically at the sea gods 'c'maaaan give it all you've got'? It has been known to happen. Turns out the MAIB have a dim view of this sort of thing these days though, so it's being phased out.

Saint Luke Posted 16 July, 2012 Posted 16 July, 2012 Designer for a furniture company - contract not domestic. Been doing it for years same problem as aintforever. Often thought about giving something back to society but commitments to family and the mortgage preclude this at the moment.
